Chapter 1001: Unexpected Harvest

~4 min read 740 words

Fu Yan Cheng helped Liu Chuxue into the carriage, climbed in himself, held the woven basket against his chest, and then placed the basket of eggs on top of it.

He did not let Liu Chuxue touch anything again.

Liu Chuxue smiled and replied, "It's a boy."

The woman's face was full of smiles: "That's wonderful."

The couple greeted the driver who had come to pick them up; after the woman saw Fu Yan Cheng's face, she nudged her husband with her elbow: "Why does this young man seem so familiar?"

Hearing his wife's words, the man looked at Fu Yan Cheng: "Come to think of it, he does look familiar."

At that moment, the driver said, "Of course he looks familiar; he bears a five or six-tenths resemblance to Ding Zhiqing, the educated youth who came down to our village."

Liu Chuxue glanced at Fu Yan Cheng and then remembered: "Does your second brother and his wife happen to be stationed in Huagu Village?"

Upon hearing Liu Chuxue's words, before Fu Yan Cheng could reply, the woman interjected: "So he really is related to Ding Zhiqing?"

Yet after saying this, her expression was simply indescribable.

Liu Chuxue immediately understood that Fu's second brother and his wife must have been quite disliked in the village.

Not knowing what she thought of, she took out a handful of candy from her pocket—actually transferred from her space—and silently handed it to the woman beside her, leaning close to her ear: "Auntie, tell me about what they did in the village."

Seeing the candy, the woman's eyes flashed with joy; although gossiping behind someone's back was not proper, seeing the candy in her hand, plus the absurd things that couple had done, she truly felt she had to speak her mind.

Thinking of her several grandchildren at home, the woman stuffed the candy into her pocket, glanced at Fu Yan Cheng, then leaned close to Liu Chuxue and whispered the gossip: "You have no idea; that couple is very slippery, especially that female educated youth, who is always complaining of pain here or itching there, making their squad leader so angry he's always frowning and glaring..."

All the way, the woman recounted everything Fu Yan Wei and his wife had done in Huagu Village, and Liu Chuxue listened with great interest.

The reason she asked around was twofold: first, she happened to meet them, and second, that future sister-in-law was no pushover; knowing more about her could only do good.

Seeing her look like a cat that had stolen fish, her eyes full of cunning, Fu Yan Cheng couldn't help but smile at the corners of his mouth.

The two got more and more absorbed in their conversation, and the woman even specifically asked the driver to take a detour to drop them off at Qiu Mu's house.

As soon as they reached the outside of Qiu Mu's gate, she also got off the carriage; before she even entered the courtyard, she shouted: "Qiushui, guests have arrived!"

Qiu Mu, who was in the kitchen preparing postpartum meals for her eldest daughter-in-law, heard the shouting outside, wiped her hands on her apron, and came out: "Sister, why have you come? Hurry inside."

The woman smiled and looked behind: "Look who has come?"

Seeing Liu Chuxue, Qiu Mu asked with curiosity: "How do you know each other?"

The woman's face was full of smiles: "I went to the city yesterday to visit my second aunt, stayed there overnight, and this morning happened to take the same carriage as Shaofeng's sister-in-law; the village ox-cart came to pick us up and gave them a ride along the way, so I only just learned that Shaofeng's wife has given birth."

"So I thought I'd drop by on the way to see the baby."

As she spoke, she took a package of pastries from the man's hand: "I didn't have time to buy anything special; this was brought by my second aunt, and I'm sharing some for Shaofeng's wife to taste."

Qiu Mu politely declined a few times before smiling and accepting it.

She also couldn't forget to shout toward her eldest son's room: "Shaofeng, come out quickly; Chuxue and Yan Cheng have arrived."

Hearing that her own sister had arrived, Xia Qiu in the room immediately moved to the window: "Chuxue."

Liu Chuxue smiled and waved at her: "Stay away from the window; you might catch a cold."
