Chapter 1018: Delivering Meat, Envy
It was just a beautiful fantasy; reality made it impossible to act.
In the end, she decided to ignore the fur and hacked the pig in half, then split one half down the middle, tossing it into the basket with the fur still on.
After tidying herself up, she finally left the space.
All this fuss meant it was no longer early; the sun had already begun to tilt westward.
She glanced toward the water pool not far behind, silently placed three fish from the space on top of the basket, then quickly headed toward Guangming Village at the foot of the mountain.
When she arrived at Guangming Village, she made no effort to avoid people; someone saw her and warmly came forward to greet her: "Isn't this Xia Qiu's younger sister? Isn't the full-moon banquet tomorrow? Why have you come today?"
Liu Chuxue smiled and pointed to the basket on her back: "My family asked me to bring some meat over so tomorrow's feast can be more abundant."
Upon hearing they were here to deliver meat, their eyes instantly lit up: "What? Delivering meat?"
Liu Chuxue naturally would not let them see the hairy wild boar meat; after all, everything on the mountain now belonged to the collective. While wild pheasants and hares were tacitly understood to be fair game for each household to supplement their meals, such a large creature as a wild boar was not allowed.
So when packing, she placed that quarter of the hairy wild boar at the very bottom of the basket; to avoid drawing attention, she even laid a plastic sheet underneath the basket to prevent any residual blood from dripping out and being seen.
On top were three wild pheasants she had hunted, plus two wild rabbits and three large grass carp taken from the space.
Seeing the fish on the very top, those people asked: "Where did you catch these fish? They're quite large!"
Liu Chuxue smiled and pointed toward the mountain: "In the water pool halfway up the slope."
Upon hearing it was that water pool, everyone's expressions changed.
The fish in that pool were indeed large, but last summer someone went to catch fish for a woman in confinement to boost her milk supply, accidentally fell in, and because of the undercurrents beneath the pool, was nearly sucked down.
The villagers who went with him managed to pull him out together, but unfortunately, he had been submerged too long and could not be saved.
So whenever the water pool halfway up the slope was mentioned, everyone turned pale at the mere mention.
Seeing everyone's expressions, Liu Chuxue then remembered the news she had heard earlier: "Aunties, it's getting late; I'll be on my way first."
As soon as she left, those people erupted: "Xia Qiu's sister has way too much nerve; the place the village men all avoid, she actually dared to go there?"
"She just came to deliver things; it doesn't necessarily mean she caught the fish herself. Didn't you hear her say her family asked her to bring them over?"
"That's true."
"Regardless, tomorrow's banquet at the Qiu family's will certainly be excellent."
"Qiu Shaofeng's in-laws are too good; they're even adding dishes to the full-moon banquet?"
"What you say is nothing new; besides, adding dishes to a full-moon banquet shows that Xia Qiu's natal family values their daughter and grandson. Simply put, they are standing up for their daughter."
"When Qiu Shaofeng's wife first married in, the second daughter-in-law of the Qiu family's eldest branch spoke no end about her natal family being poor. Look at people now; you really shouldn't be so sharp-tongued. Ever since her natal family turned things around, they've slapped her face repeatedly."
"After all, it's because Qiu Shaofeng's wife's natal family dotes on their daughter. Earlier, Qiu Shaofeng's mother said that most of the nourishing supplements during the confinement period were sent by her natal family, fearing their daughter wouldn't recover properly and the grandson wouldn't have enough milk."
"Simply put, Qiu Shaofeng is the lucky one; with such in-laws, perhaps one day they'll even help him move to the city and eat state-allocated grain."
