Chapter 1288: Matters of Each Household
Knowing Fu Yan Cheng would return that evening, Liu Chuxue was so happy she felt she could fly.
Thinking he surely hadn't eaten well these past few days, she took the chicken she had exchanged at Baifu Village out of its cage, tossed it into the space, and swapped it for a chicken raised inside the space.
She boiled water, plucked the feathers, and did it all in one go; after cleaning it thoroughly, she put it on to stew first.
Anyway, everyone knew they had gone to Baifu Village to exchange things, so it would be normal for the smell of stewed chicken to spread.
Remembering there were still plenty of red beans in the space, she took some out, prepared sorghum rice and regular rice, and planned to cook some bean porridge later to keep on hand.
While she was busy over here, the neighboring households were not idle either.
In the neighboring courtyard, as Shen Kaiyuan entered the room, Mo Ruhua pulled him and said, "I have something to tell you."
Shen Kaiyuan immediately pulled her into his arms: "So excited? It must be good news."
Mo Ruhua's eyes sparkled as she said, "Did you know? Company Commander Fu's wife is pregnant."
Hearing this, Shen Kaiyuan looked guilty; he had known about this before, but Company Commander Fu had repeatedly told them not to spread it, and he hadn't even told his wife. He glanced toward the neighboring courtyard: "Did Sister-in-law tell you?"
Mo Ruhua nodded: "Except for Tian Shi mentioning the family urging for a child, I saw Sister-in-law touching her belly, so I asked, and I didn't expect she really was pregnant."
Shen Kaiyuan knew his wife had been annoyed by the urging lately: "It's fine. If you're tired of the family always pushing for a child, we'll just visit less. Don't put too much pressure on yourself; just let nature take its course."
Mo Ruhua leaned into the man's arms and nodded lightly: "We can only do that."
Shen Kaiyuan lowered his head and whispered into his wife's ear: "Then I'll try harder from now on."
Mo Ruhua felt a bit shy, stood up straight from his embrace, raised her fist as if to hit him, and said, "What are you talking about?"
Seeing her smile, Shen Kaiyuan breathed a sigh of relief; it seemed he would have to tell his family later to stop mentioning children in front of his wife, so as not to pressure her.
Just then, Mo Ruhua said, "Kaiyuan, how about I transfer my job in the city and find work here at the brigade? That way I won't have to run back and forth every day, and..."
She didn't finish her sentence, glanced at Shen Kaiyuan, and then turned away.
Shen Kaiyuan was naturally delighted: "You've figured it out?"
Mo Ruhua made a soft "Mm" sound: "Sister-in-law next door with such a good job transferred out too. Anyway, if I want to go back to the city, I can just go when I have time; it's much easier than running back and forth every day."
Shen Kaiyuan pulled her back into his arms: "As long as you've figured it out and don't regret it, I'm all for it."
After the couple reached an agreement, they went into the kitchen together to cook while being affectionate.
Meanwhile, across the way, Company Commander Cui was losing his temper: "Zhang Lianhua, do I lack food for you or drink for you? Do you have to embarrass me every single day?"
"Did you hear what the Division Commander said? If you want me to take off this uniform and go back to the countryside to farm, then keep causing trouble. And keep Yu Yao under control; don't let her cause any more trouble."
After speaking, he lay directly on the bed, his face iron-green, staring at the ceiling and thinking about how to restore his image in front of the leaders.
Seeing him like this, Zhang Lianhua muttered softly, "Before, you weren't you praising Yu Yao for being capable? Now you're blaming me?"
But thinking of today's situation, she truly dared not cause a scene again. She had worked hard just to join the army with her husband; she didn't want to go back to the countryside, facing the yellow earth with her back to the sky. Besides, her own mother-in-law was not easy to deal with; if she hadn't given birth to two sons in a row after entering the family, she would probably have been worn down by her mother-in-law just like her eldest and second sisters-in-law.
It was just that her mother-in-law absolutely refused to let her bring her two sons along to join the army, saying that changing schools would make them unable to adapt.
Actually, she knew perfectly well in her heart; it was just that she feared her two grandsons would drift away from them if they were too far apart for too long.
