Chapter 1603: What Are You Two Doing?

~4 min read 799 words

The grandfather and grandson were brought home by Liu Chuxue.

The moment they stepped into the courtyard, they saw the triplets on the cool mat under the tree.

Uncle Lao Wu's eyes immediately lit up: "Chuxue, your three little ones have all grown this big?"

The three little ones saw their own mother and all tilted their heads back, letting out little "aoo-aoo" sounds, trying to crawl forward but unable to move, their arms and legs paddling away—just like little turtles stranded on a beach, utterly comical.

Liu Chuxue jogged over, reaching out to pick them up as she introduced them to the father and son behind her: "Yes, just over four months now, and they roll over like pros—if you don't fence them in, they'll roll right off the cool mat in no time."

Wenyang was a man who loved children; looking at the three little ones, his eyes were full of affection.

Seeing them enter the courtyard, Aunt Wei went into the kitchen to pour water, and now came out carrying two cups: "Here, sit down and have some water."

Liu Chuxue introduced her to them: "This is Aunt Wei, she helps me look after the three children here."

She then turned and introduced the father and son to Aunt Wei as well.

Seeing it was getting late, Aunt Wei smiled and said: "You all chat, I'll go boil the noodles."

Fu Yan Cheng entered the courtyard just as Aunt Wei's food came out of the pot.

Fu Yan Cheng greeted them warmly: "How did it go? Did it work out?"

Wenyang had only seen Fu Yan Cheng from a distance before; now, seeing him up close, he was a little timid, but still smiled lightly and nodded in reply: "I got the job. I'll come over tomorrow to finish the paperwork and then start right away."

Fu Yan Cheng poured them a little more water: "Getting the job is the main thing. The furniture workshop does good business. Since the army arranged it, the army will back you up in the future too. Just come and work hard."

The father and son naturally believed him completely, nodding again and again in agreement.

Aunt Wei sliced the braised meat she had made the day before, and taking advantage of the leftover braising broth, cooked a pot of vegetables, poured a little of the broth over the noodles, and topped them with the stir-fried vegetarian braising sauce she had prepared earlier.

A simple meal, and it had the father and son so enraptured they could barely think straight.

As they left, Liu Chuxue also packed them two bags of braised meat: "Uncle Lao Wu, this is my own braising. Don't refuse—one bag to take home for the rest of the family to try, and please bring the other bag to Grandpa Secretary for me."

Uncle Lao Wu and his son were very embarrassed: "How can we eat your food and take things too?"

They needed to catch the two o'clock bus back to the city, then transfer to go home. Fu Yan Cheng happened to be heading to the army, so he gave them a lift out of the family compound along the way.

That evening, Fu Yan Cheng came back with news from his little aunt Xiao Nianchun's side: "Her colleague's son was kept on too. My little aunt kept thanking me, saying this was just the chance to repay the favor her colleague's family owed her before."

In the days that followed, Liu Chuxue kept a very regular routine—translating materials for the First Ministry of Machine Building, and drawing one design per month for the state-run tailor shop she had worked with before.

The rest of the time was either spent making clothes for the triplets, or taking them to the little square out front for a stroll. Life was very pleasant.

Fu Yan Cheng, this new father, had grown quite experienced by now; whenever he was home, he would lend a hand.

See, he was just by the water basin washing diapers when Shen Kaiyuan came running in: "Fu Yan Cheng."

That shout startled Fu Yan Cheng: "What's gotten into you? Lucky Liu Chuxue took the triplets out for a walk—if they were home, they'd have been scared out of their wits by that yell of yours."

Shen Kaiyuan paid no attention to what he was saying now, just strode forward and hugged Fu Yan Cheng: "Brother, I'm going to be a father too."

Fu Yan Cheng had been about to curse him out, but hearing this, he reached out to push him away—yet Shen Kaiyuan just wouldn't let go.

As it happened, Liu Chuxue had just stepped through the door and saw the whole scene, her eyes going wide: "What are you two doing?"
