Chapter 1648: Not Someone Who Cannot Distinguish Right from Wrong
Xiao Nianchun had called specifically because she was returning home; she wanted everyone to know that her niece had been admitted to the best university.
She pushed her bicycle forward: "You all chat; I'll head back first."
As she walked, she told her two children: "Your elder sister Chuxue has been admitted to Peking University this time. You must study hard in the future and strive to become her alumni."
Her daughter, Qiu Yilin, was still young and merely smiled at her words, but her son, Qiu Yiming, laughed and spoke up: "Mom, you're giving me far too much credit. Even if I tried my hardest, I could never catch up to my cousin's brain."
Xiao Nianchun had only said it; she didn't truly expect them to aim for Peking University, after all, she knew exactly what her own son and daughter were capable of: "Even if you don't get in, it's fine to set it as a goal. Just keep working hard at your studies."
Her daughter Qiu Yilin looked up at her mother: "Mom, are we really going to the state-run restaurant for dinner tonight?"
Xiao Nianchun smiled at her daughter: "Yes, tonight I'll allow each of you to order one dish you like."
Qiu Yilin spoke softly: "Dad has something to do tonight and won't be home for dinner. If we don't take him along, wouldn't that be inappropriate?"
Xiao Nianchun thought it over and agreed: "Then let's go find him and see if he's finished with his business."
She returned the bicycle to the courtyard, locked it, went inside to get money and coupons, and then led her pair of children toward the home of Qiu Jinzhou's colleague.
That colleague also lived in a large compound, but unlike them, he resided in the east wing of the first courtyard at the front.
When the three of them arrived, they happened to see a woman holding a wine cup, standing before Qiu Jinzhou, looking at him with a shy expression: "Brother Jinzhou, thank you for coming to help. I'll toast you."
Someone jeered: "Sister Zhizhi, we also came to help. Why are you only toasting your Brother Jinzhou?"
Xiao Nianchun's good mood vanished instantly.
She heard Qiu Jinzhou say: "I came to help your brother. If there's to be a toast, it should be your brother who toasts, or at the very least your nephew, since it's his wedding tomorrow. What does it mean for you to toast me?"
Everyone present immediately knew that Qiu Jinzhou was angry.
His colleague quickly stepped forward at that moment: "Little sister, this has nothing to do with you. Go to the kitchen and give your sister-in-law a hand."
The woman named Zhizhi looked unwilling and said: "Big brother, I didn't mean anything else; I just thought..."
Before she could finish speaking, Xiao Nianchun walked over: "Jinzhou, are you finished with your work?"
At the sound of that voice, Qiu Jinzhou was startled.
After turning around and seeing who it was, he said: "Wife, how did you all get here?"
Everyone in the room had seen Xiao Nianchun before; at that moment, they all felt somewhat awkward, wondering how much of their earlier jeering she had witnessed.
Before Xiao Nianchun could reply, the mischievous Qiu Yilin rushed forward and hugged her father's leg: "Dad, my cousin has been admitted to Peking University."
"Mom is so happy that she wants to take me and my brother to the state-run restaurant for a meal. We thought it would be bad to leave you out, so we came to see if you were finished and if you wanted to join us?"
Now everyone in the room felt even more awkward.
Hearing these words, Qiu Jinzhou looked at Xiao Nianchun: "Who is Yilin talking about?"
Xiao Nianchun was not someone who couldn't distinguish right from wrong; since it was not her husband's fault, she naturally would not fail to distinguish between inside and outside: "It's Chuxue from Second Brother's family. I only found out this afternoon."
Qiu Jinzhou smiled: "This is truly wonderful news. It certainly deserves celebration. Let's go; I'll go to the state-run restaurant with you all."
At that moment, someone interjected: "Sister-in-law, did your niece really get into Peking University?"
