Chapter 1671: I'm not unfamiliar with the road, what's the rush?
Liu Chuxue watched the person being pulled away, then chatted casually with Tang Xinrui for a few more sentences before saying, "Sister-in-law, I should go—if I delay any longer I'll miss the bus."
No sooner had she finished speaking and was about to pick up her things than Fu Yan Cheng came running over: "I'll see you onto the bus."
Liu Chuxue saw that his forehead was covered in fine beads of sweat and knew he had finished his work at the regiment and run over; her heart felt a pang of mixed emotions: "I'm not unfamiliar with the road, what's the rush?"
As she spoke, her eyes grew moist.
Afraid Fu Yan Cheng might notice something, she handed the carry bag in her hands to him, then pulled a slip of paper from her pocket, took a pen from Fu Yan Cheng's coat pocket, wrote down a phone number, and handed it to Sister-in-law Tang: "Sister-in-law, this is the public phone at the entrance of my alley. If anything comes up, call this number in the morning, at noon, or in the evening—I should be around."
Tang Xinrui nodded at her: "Alright, I'll keep it. You two hurry off now, don't miss the bus."
It really was getting late. After Liu Chuxue answered in the affirmative, the two of them hurried outside.
Fu Yan Cheng reminded her once more: "Once I've arranged things here I'll come back. Tomorrow evening you don't need to wait for me for dinner. The day after tomorrow I'll bring the kids to see you off for registration."
To put his mind at ease, Liu Chuxue didn't refuse either, only finding it secretly amusing: Look at that—the stakes he's raising keep getting bigger, he's even putting the triplets to use. Just how uneasy does that make him about her?
By the time they arrived, the shuttle bus was already there, with passengers boarding.
Fu Yan Cheng watched her get on and sit down, then said with lip movements: "Wait for me."
The corners of Liu Chuxue's mouth curved up slightly, and she softly replied to him: "Alright."
Watching the bus until it was far away, Fu Yan Cheng then jogged back to the regiment.
He had only just taken over the regiment's affairs not long ago, and on top of that had taken leave a few days earlier to accompany Liu Chuxue back to the Xiao clan estate, so quite a bit of work had piled up on his hands.
Division Commander Guan, seeing his sweat-soaked clothes, teased: "Who would have thought our always decisive-and-swift Regiment Commander Fu was actually the clingy type."
Fu Yan Cheng heard these words and his expression seemed calm, but Division Commander Guan clearly saw the tips of his ears turn red, and couldn't help laughing: "Youth really is a fine thing."
Fu Yan Cheng still had to rush back to the city tomorrow evening. With his mind now set on handling the work in hand, he gave a few brief replies and quickly steered the conversation back to the tasks at hand.
Meanwhile, Liu Chuxue, who had left by bus, now ran into trouble—a pregnant woman among the fellow passengers began having stomach pains halfway through the ride.
But they were now right in the middle between the city and the military district, with no other option, the driver could only stomp hard on the accelerator. Yet the pregnant woman's stomach hurt so badly she couldn't sit steady at all, and on top of that the road was far from smooth, so the pregnant woman swayed left and right.
Liu Chuxue was sitting directly across from the pregnant woman and really couldn't stand by and watch, afraid she might take a bad tumble. She could only stand up and use her own body to block the aisle outside, so that the woman could sit more steadily.
A male comrade sitting inside, at this point no longer caring about propriety between men and women, also helped hold the pregnant woman's other arm in an effort to steady her.
The driver, in pursuit of speed with stability, was drenched in sweat from the intense tension, and finally—just as the woman was about to give birth—the shuttle bus arrived at the nearest hospital.
One could put it this way: by the time the pregnant woman was wheeled onto the hospital gurney, the baby's head was already showing. If it hadn't been for the driver's cooperation, and if the passengers at the stops in between hadn't given up getting off and let the driver head straight for the hospital, this baby would likely have been born on the bus.
When Liu Chuxue got home, Auntie Wei was outside with the triplets: "You didn't make the shuttle bus?"
Liu Chuxue smiled: "I did, but there was a little incident on the bus—I lent a hand, which held me up some time. Sorry for making you worry."
