Chapter 173: I Never Dated Her
Zhang Yurong stepped back: "I heard the second son of the Geng family met with an accident and is dead."
"Who told you that?"
"Everyone outside is talking about it. He transferred last year to become a deputy county head in a county under Jin City; originally, after a few years of training, he would have been transferred back to the capital, but who would have thought such a thing would happen."
"How did he die?"
"I heard that while inspecting the spring plowing at a commune below, the cows in the field suddenly went mad for some reason. Several children were standing by a ditch; in an attempt to save those children, he was knocked by a cow into a deep well used for irrigation nearby. By the time he was pulled out, he was already dead."
Ding Runlan was not bad-looking, but she constantly wore a pitiful expression as if someone had bullied her; she did not look like she would bring prosperity to a family, and she was simply not likable.
For a time, the rumor spread in the compound that the fourth son was dating her; she had specifically asked her son, and at that time, her son carelessly replied: "I have no relationship with her; don't listen to people's nonsense."
But later, she encountered the situation several times herself, with Ding Runlan trailing behind the group of people led by the fourth son; seeing her stand beside her son, she actually believed the rumors that they were dating, thinking her son was too embarrassed to admit it, which was why he said that.
As a result, not long after, she heard that Ding Runlan was getting married, to the second son of the Geng family, Geng Rongsheng, who lived in the military compound where the Eunuch resided.
Because of that matter, she had been in a depressed mood for several days, feeling that her own fourth son had been played; she even went to the unit privately to see her son, but the fourth son still maintained a cynical attitude: "I never dated her, and I rejected her with decisive words; everything was staged by her."
Since then, Fu's mother disliked Ding Runlan even more.
Recalling how she and her husband had visited the Eunuch at the compound earlier and happened to meet Ding Runlan's uncle who raised her, Ding Yuze, and his wife Zhang Huijuan, she learned from their conversation that Ding Runlan was a scheming person.
During the years she lived in their home, she often played small tricks, making Zhang Huijuan, the mistress of the house, dare not utter a single harsh word, fearing others would talk, leaving her feeling aggrieved with nowhere to complain.
After all, she was very good at pretending to be obedient in front of her own uncle.
Over time, her second aunt Zhang Hui felt it was pointless; since her husband protected the niece every time, she simply adopted a cold approach, no longer asking about Ding Runlan's affairs and treating her as if she were air.
At first, her uncle Ding Yuze thought his wife could not tolerate the niece; he quarreled with his wife privately over the niece's matters many times. After the number of times increased, he also sensed the problem, but his wife no longer had the warmth of the past for him; they had become a genuine pair just living together.
Pulling herself out of her thoughts: "So, did she return to the Ding family or the Geng family?"
Zhang Yurong poured herself a glass of water: "I am telling you about this matter."
Fu's mother, disregarding the work in her hands, stared at her own gossipy third daughter-in-law: "Stop beating around the bush."
Zhang Yurong drained the water in one gulp: "She did want to return to the Ding family for a short stay, but her second aunt said that a married daughter is like spilled water; moreover, they were never her biological parents; they only took her in to raise her because her parents died early."
She did want to manipulate her uncle, but now her cousin Ding Runhui is married; the room where she used to live with her cousin Ding Runhong has been partitioned into two small rooms; one is occupied by her cousin Ding Runhong, and the other by the youngest son of the Ding family, Ding Runjun; there is simply no place for her to stay."
Saying this, she stood up to get the thermos: "No, no, I have spoken too much today and am still extremely thirsty; I must drink another glass of water."
Fu's mother said nothing, but her brows remained furrowed.
