Chapter 181: Such a Fine Young Man, I Wonder Which Family Got Lucky
The construction of Liu Chuxue's house had reached its final finishing stage; the retaining slope in front would also be completed in another day or two.
Standing in the private plot behind and helping, Liu Chuxue looked at the earthen slope still two or three meters away from her family's boundary: "Dad, why not strike while the iron is hot and have Uncle Liangzi and the others build a stone wall there? That way, even when heavy rain falls in the future, the mud won't wash down every time."
She had checked; the space behind her home was not enough for a full residential plot, so even if spending some money to build a wall, it wouldn't be making clothes for others to wear. Moreover, it would benefit her own family. Later, she could find some suitable thorny plants to grow along the wall; this would not only deter thieves but also protect the built wall.
Liu's father understood his daughter's meaning, thought for a moment, and said: "Alright, do as you say."
These past few days, many had inquired about how much the house cost and how much of the reward Liu Chuxue received remained. He understood their intentions clearly; rather than inviting others' covetousness, it was better to spend lavishly in the open, making those with hidden agendas give up hope.
Besides, building a wall at the back was truly beneficial and harmless to the family, so it was better to grant his daughter's wish.
Liu Chuxue tossed the small hoe she used for weeding: "Dad, once you finish setting up the scaffolding, stop working. I'll go to the front and tell Uncle Liangzi, so he doesn't take on another family's work and have no time to build the wall for us."
Having spoken, she headed toward the front.
However, as soon as she arrived at the front, she saw Fu Yan Cheng talking with Uncle Liangzi: "Why did you come today?"
Seeing the young girl, Fu Yan Cheng's eyes were full of light: "I just returned from a mission. I was thinking the house should be nearly finished, so I brought the glass you requested."
Liu Chuxue was moved again; this fellow was truly considerate: "That is truly thank you. I was just planning to call you these days to discuss this matter."
Uncle Liangzi watched the two interact, his eyes full of smiles.
Fu Yan Cheng pointed to the jeep not far away: "Uncle Liangzi, please find a few people to help me unload the glass from the roof of the car."
Liu Chuxue followed his finger to look; a large wooden frame laid flat was tied to the car roof.
She heard Fu Yan Cheng say: "Glass is fragile; this takes a bit more effort, but it ensures the glass remains undamaged."
Liu Chuxue looked around: "Drive the car to the platform over there; that will save some effort."
A faint smile appeared on Fu Yan Cheng's lips; he didn't expect the little girl to be quite clever, thinking along the same lines as him.
Hearing the commotion, Liu's father also walked back from the private plot behind.
Seeing him approach, Uncle Liangzi said: "You really get exactly what you wish for; we were just talking about the glass this morning, and here the glass has arrived."
Liu's father hadn't expected Comrade Fu to remember this matter, and the timing of the delivery was perfect; the doors and windows had just received their final coat of paint and were nearly dry.
Soon, everyone carried the wooden frame containing the glass into the courtyard of the new house.
Liu Chuxue, however, looked troubled: "I'm afraid there are no glass cutters in the village."
After all, many households in the village still pasted raw paper on their windows; those in better condition replaced only the center pane with glass, while the edges remained pasted with raw paper. She had heard before that people measured the dimensions and went to the commune to have someone cut the glass.
Fu Yan Cheng smiled and took two glass cutters from his pocket: "I brought them."
He then took out two tape measures: "And rulers."
Not only Liu Chuxue, but even Liu's father, who had been standing aside unable to help, was moved, thinking: This Comrade Fu is truly considerate. Such a fine young man; I wonder which family is lucky enough to have him?
