Chapter 202: Find a Way to Ruin This Marriage

~4 min read 731 words

The woman seated at the head took a deep breath: "What about the Liu family? Have you found any trace?"

"Lady, there has been no opportunity these past few days."

"What? You can't even handle such a small matter?"

"Lady, you don't know. For these days, the Liu family has been putting on a grand show every day. That old couple of the Liu family, perhaps feeling too ashamed, have been holed up at home all day without stepping out."

"You really are useless. If not during the day, then why not at night?"

"Lady, it's not that we don't want to. When we arrived that day, we happened to encounter an officer frequenting the Liu family, so we thought to act another day. We didn't expect to receive your message summoning us."

"An officer? How could an officer appear at the Liu family's?"

"We didn't dare get too close. We only learned from a few village children that the officer is currently courting the young lady of the Liu family's second branch."

Upon hearing "second branch," the woman's face darkened: "Find a way to ruin this marriage. They absolutely must not succeed."

"Yes."

After agreeing with the village cadres, Uncle Liangzi led people to build up the ridge not far from Liu Chuxue's private plot, and specifically dug two ditches on both sides to guard against summer rains.

Once finished, it looked not only neat, but even if heavy rains fell in the future, there would be no fear of affecting the house.

Villagers would come over whenever they had nothing to do to look at the house, their eyes full of envy.

These past few days, whenever Liu Chuxue had nothing to do, she would go into the mountains to dig up some thorns and plant two rows a little distance away on top of the built-up ridge; this would not only keep wild animals away but also ward off malicious people.

Closer to the ridge, she planted some Sichuan pepper trees, jujube trees, and hawthorn trees. It wasn't that she didn't want to plant others, but she couldn't find saplings.

Because Liu Chuxue fed her family the space's spring water every day, her father's legs recovered very well; these past few days, he could occasionally walk a few steps without his crutches, though he knew that haste makes waste and dared not be too reckless.

Her mother's body had also changed; not only did her skin gain a luster, but her entire demeanor looked much younger. People even joked that happiness lifts the spirit, and with a good mindset, one grows younger.

She also felt it was due to the comfortable days lately and didn't think much more of it.

Chunxiao's changes were also significant; in this month and more, she had grown quite a bit taller, her hair was no longer so withered and yellow, and her already decent grades were now handled with ease, with the teacher praising her considerable progress.

As for Liu Chuxue herself, the change was even greater; her previously withered figure was now visibly fuller, and once June passed, she could no longer wear her previous summer clothes.

For these past few days, she had been wearing an old garment of her mother's. She was thinking of going into the city these days to deliver some fish to the hospital side, to see if she could exchange it for a few cloth coupons, so she could buy new clothes for everyone in the family to wear on the house-warming day.

After planting the last jujube tree, she heard her younger sister Chunxiao's voice: "Sister, Ninth Uncle and the others have delivered the newly made furniture."

Liu Chuxue filled the soil back in and poured water from the bucket beside her: "I'm coming."

After putting things away and returning to the front, she saw Ninth Uncle leading several children from the family unloading the furniture: "Ninth Uncle, this cabinet is truly well-made. No wonder so many people queue up just to wait for you."

She couldn't help but give Ninth Uncle a thumbs-up.

Ninth Uncle smiled sheepishly: "Your Ninth Uncle has been assisting my master since I was nine years old. Until now, it has been over thirty years. I have done only this one thing in my life; if I couldn't do it well, it would be inexcusable."
