Chapter 238: Just Do As You Think Best

~4 min read 766 words

When Liu Chuxue arrived home, half a bag of corn flour and half a bag of sorghum flour had been added to her back basket: "Mom, I'm back."

Seeing her return, Liu's mother hurried over to greet her: "Did you see your sister?"

While unloading the back basket, Liu Chuxue replied: "I did. She looks fine. Her younger brother-in-law is being matched today; when I arrived, the woman's side was there as well."

"So did you see her? Does she look easy to get along with?"

"I didn't see her, but my sister knows that Miss. They've dealt with each other a few times before. According to my sister, her temperament is good."

"That's good, that's good."

Liu's mother helped Liu Chuxue, lending a hand to set the back basket down: "What have you packed in this basket? Why is it so heavy?"

"In a few days we're hosting the housewarming banquet. I'm afraid our grain won't be enough, so I traded for some. In a while I'll go to the village committee to ask if there's still wheat in the warehouse, trade for some more, and then we'll steam three-grain buns."

It wasn't that she didn't want to hold the housewarming banquet better; first, the grain in her space hadn't ripened yet, and second, in these times being full was already quite good. Her own family was already conspicuous enough; it was better to keep a low profile.

Liu's mother knew her second daughter had a plan: "Alright, just do as you think best."

Recalling the tasks her daughter had arranged for her earlier: "Daughter, I've already asked in the next village. Auntie Wu agreed. She said she'll come over early on the afternoon of the fifth."

"Then on the morning of the fifth I'll go up the mountain to see if I can hunt some wild game. In the afternoon I'll go to the water pool to catch some fish. Even if there's no meat, fish will do. The vegetables in the private plot probably won't be enough for the banquet feast. Mom, you'll have to trade with Auntie Cuihong and the others for some then."

She did have vegetables in her space, but it wasn't convenient to take them out. It was better to trade with families in the village; that was safer.

After the mother and daughter talked for a while longer, Liu Chuxue finally went out, preparing to head to the brigade office to check if there was still white flour in the village warehouse. If not, she would think of other ways.

Of the grain collected earlier from the Ge family and the Chen family, most was coarse grain. The white flour was negligible, no different from having none at all.

She had decided: when the time came, she would hunt a few wild rabbits and pheasants back, but not too many, to avoid making others envious and causing trouble. As for fish, she could bring back several more; that would count as a meat dish.

When she arrived at the brigade office, only the Party Secretary was there: "Grandpa Secretary, you're here?"

"Liu Chuxue, is there something you need?"

"Grandpa Secretary, we're hosting a housewarming banquet on the sixth. I came to see if there's wheat in the village warehouse that I can trade for."

"How much do you want to trade for?"

"If possible, could you trade me twenty jin?"

The Party Secretary nodded: "Alright. Shall we go get it now?"

"If it's convenient, I'd like to pick it up right now. I can take advantage of having nothing to do today to grind it into flour."

The Party Secretary stood up and took a key from the drawer: "We'll go along the way to call the accountant."

Hearing they were going to call the accountant, Liu Chuxue's smile faded. But this was the normal procedure, so she could only nod: "Alright."

When they arrived, Liu Quanwen was just coming out of the courtyard.

The Party Secretary stated his purpose directly. Even if Liu Quanwen was unwilling, he couldn't refuse the Party Secretary's face.

Aside from Liu Quanwen's sour expression, the matter proceeded very smoothly.

After paying the money and receiving the receipt, Liu Chuxue hoisted the wheat onto her back and left.

A dim, indistinct light flashed in Liu Quanwen's eyes as he watched Liu Chuxue's back. Liu Chuxue, through her spiritual power, naturally saw his expression clearly and couldn't help but think: As long as you dare to make a move, I will make you regret it until your intestines turn green.
