Chapter 268: Guilty Conscience

~4 min read 762 words

When Ding Youwen left, he felt utterly wretched.

Facing that old vegetable stalk, he simply could not stand up to her, yet if he did not serve her well, he feared he would not be able to leave.

So he gritted his teeth and used the very method his little mistress had used on him.

Once on the street, he headed straight for a bathhouse not far away; if he did not wash himself clean, he would truly vomit, thinking: Why hasn't that old bastard died yet?

He deliberately detoured to the department store nearby to buy a full set of toiletries and change of clothes before entering the bathhouse.

It was working hours, so not many people were in the bathhouse.

After entering the bath pool, he submerged his entire body in the water; had it not been for the bubbles rising to the surface, the other person in the pool would have thought he had drowned.

Even that frightened the other person greatly; just as he was about to call for help, he saw Ding Youwen's head emerge from the water and couldn't help but sigh with relief: This person must be sick.

He quickly climbed out of the bath pool, gave himself a quick rinse under the shower, and hurriedly left.

Ding Youwen soaked in the bath pool for a long time before finally getting up, washing, and leaving.

After going out, he did not rush back to his workplace but strolled slowly down the street, thinking: How can I make that old woman disappear without a trace?

But no matter how he thought about it, nothing seemed safe for him; after all, if he could not kill her in one strike, he feared he would either die or lose a layer of skin, and he dared not take the risk.

It was nearly dusk when he entered his home.

Just as he was about to sit on the sofa to rest for a while, he heard someone shouting from downstairs in the apartment building: "Section Chief Ding, phone call."

After shouting several times with no response, he heard the person mutter to himself: "Sigh, why is no one answering? I clearly saw Section Chief Ding go upstairs."

With no choice, the person raised his voice and shouted again: "Section Chief Ding, phone call."

Ding Youwen was startled by the shout and finally came to his senses; he quickly walked to the window and responded: "Coming, coming, sorry, I was in the inner room and didn't hear; I'll be right down."

Not daring to delay any further, he hurried downstairs: "I am Ding Youwen; who is it?"

A voice came from the other end of the phone: "Youwen, it's me; were you not at the workplace this afternoon?"

Hearing his wife's words, he immediately felt guilty: "Yes, I went out this afternoon to handle some matters."

Although Wang Yinlan on the other end of the phone was somewhat puzzled, she did not ask further: "Ding Surong called you this afternoon but no one answered, so we called our workplace; she said she had something to ask you and wants you to call her back tomorrow at twelve thirty noon; she will be waiting there."

Hearing his wife's words, Ding Youwen's heartbeat quickened involuntarily: Could it be that our daughter has found a place?

Just as he was lost in thought, he heard the voice from the other end of the phone: "Are you listening to me?"

Ding Youwen quickly replied: "I heard you; I will definitely remember this tomorrow, rest assured."

After finishing this matter, Wang Yinlan continued: "There are many orders at the factory recently, so we have to work overtime; I probably won't get off work early tonight."

"Understood."

After hanging up the phone, he turned and walked home, feeling very displeased; since his wife had to work overtime, he would have to cook dinner again.

When our daughter was at home, she used to cook; now, everything has fallen on him.

It seems it is time to find someone to transfer their mother to a different post.

Actually, Wang Yinlan had mentioned it to him many times, thinking that since he now held significant power, finding someone to transfer her post should not be difficult, but he stubbornly refused to agree.

After all, if she were transferred, it would be inconvenient for him to meet his mistress in private; but now that our daughter has gone to the countryside, he did not want to have to do housework after getting off work.
