Chapter 289: Massive Hemorrhage

~4 min read 737 words

Qiu Tai Nai spoke up then: "Put it in a net bag, tie the opening tight. Pay attention while you walk; it shouldn't spill."

Qiu Mu chimed in: "We don't have a thermos bucket. Borrowing one now would be too late. Put it in a clay pot; we'll have to borrow the hospital stove to heat it up later."

Qiu Tai Nai agreed it made sense; after all, even hot porridge would likely cool by the time they reached the county: "The second daughter-in-law is right. Don't bring the clay pot back either; it might come in handy later."

The eldest son and his father dared not delay further. Except for the clay pot held by the youngest son, Qiu Shaohe, all the bowls, chopsticks, and dry food were packed into the carrying basket, and they prepared to head to the county.

Remembering the flatbed cart they had left at the main gate, Qiu's eldest uncle looked at Qiu Shaofeng, who had just come out of the house: "Shaofeng, return the flatbed cart later."

Qiu Shaofeng replied: "I understand, Uncle."

Qiu Tai Nai stood up and handed over the money and grain coupons: "This is all the grain coupons the family has. Take them and use them wisely."

Qiu Laifeng felt deeply uncomfortable; these grain coupons were a gift from the second daughter-in-law's eldest daughter when she returned to honor the matriarch. But thinking of the current situation, he wiped his face: "Nai, later..."

Qiu Tai Nai naturally knew what he wanted to say: "Enough. We've run into trouble. That child, Shao Lan, won't mind. Go quickly."

The eldest son and his father did not linger further, as the other side was still waiting for money.

At the county hospital, Zhang Shanmei's cesarean section was not going smoothly either; it was likely poor uterine contraction causing massive hemorrhage.

A nurse came out. The Qiu family, waiting outside, wanted to ask about the situation inside, but the nurse didn't even bother to attend to them and ran off directly.

Another nurse came out behind her, explained the situation to the Qiu family, and said their department director would do everything possible to save the mother, and a nurse had already been sent to the blood bank to fetch blood.

Before the nurse could finish speaking, Qiu's eldest uncle's wife, her face pale with fright, said repeatedly: "Transfusion, we'll transfuse. As long as the person can be saved, it's fine. Physician, please, you must save my daughter-in-law and grandson."

The nurse did not correct her title: "We will do our best."

Seeing the previous nurse return with a blood bag, that nurse shouted to her: "Quick, you all step aside, let her in."

The Qiu family quickly made way, allowing the nurse to enter the operating room smoothly.

After about half an hour, a faint infant cry was heard. Everyone breathed a slight sigh of relief, but remembering what the nurse had just said, they grew anxious again, fearing something might happen to Zhang Shanmei.

Not long after, a nurse came out holding the baby: "Zhang Shanmei's family, it's a girl, six jin and two liang. The baby was somewhat oxygen-deprived in the womb and now needs to be sent to the pediatrics department for a checkup. A family member must accompany and care for her."

Upon hearing this, the Qiu family's hearts grew even more uneasy.

Qiu Shaohu, a grown man, could not care for a newborn. As Qiu Mu was torn between options, the eldest daughter-in-law, Wang Lihua, spoke up: "Mom, Shaohu and I will go. You and the second brother stay here and watch over the second sister-in-law. If anything happens, I'll have Shaohu come over to relay the message."

There was no other choice now. Qiu's eldest uncle's wife nodded: "That works."

Qiu Shaohu was completely dazed, not yet having processed what was happening, when he saw his eldest brother and sister-in-law follow the nurse holding the baby away: "Mom, will they be alright?"

Seeing his second son in this state, Qiu's eldest uncle's wife feared he might not hold up: "It will definitely be fine. Didn't you hear the nurse earlier? The one performing surgery on your wife is their director. If they didn't have some skill, they wouldn't be a director. Relax."

Only she herself knew how worried she was, constantly praying to all the gods in her heart.
