Chapter 297: The Tsundere Zui Feng

~4 min read 737 words

Thinking of the five hundred yuan she had barely managed to get from the Chen family, three hundred of which had gone to compensate her natal family, while the rest had been used to get her second son's teeth fixed and his leg treated—she hadn't even dared let her son stay in the hospital long, rushing to discharge him instead.

The money borrowed from the villagers by her eldest son to rescue them had been counted against them during the family division, and who knew when those debts would ever be repaid; sorrow welled up in her heart, and she wept uncontrollably.

Liu Jiandong, already in a foul mood upon hearing his mother's crying, shouted directly, "Stop crying."

Everything had been so full of hope before, yet how had it come to this?

While they were clouded with worry, the Chuxue household was filled with joy; there was no other reason—little Zui Feng had actually returned with a rabbit in his mouth.

Chuxue, who had just returned from watching the commotion and hadn't even entered the courtyard yet, heard Mother Liu exclaim, "Ah, Zui Feng, where did that rabbit come from?"

She stepped a few paces into the courtyard and saw a rabbit lying before Zui Feng, while Zui Feng stood there with an air of tsundere pride, his expression clearly saying, "Hurry up and praise me."

She truly understood Zui Feng's meaning from that dog's face.

Perhaps hearing the commotion at the main gate, Zui Feng looked up and ran toward her, his tail wagging happily: "Zui Feng, good job; from now on, we'll have plenty to eat."

Indeed, now whether she brought things back or took them out from the space, she finally had an excuse.

Mother Liu also wore a look of delight: "I never expected Zui Feng to be so impressive, able to catch wild game."

Chuxue rubbed Zui Feng's dog head: "He is a descendant of a military dog; his genes are powerful. When Fu Yan Cheng comes later, have him train Zui Feng again; perhaps from now on, the household's meat supply will be secured."

Zui Feng seemed to understand her words, knowing Chuxue was speaking well of him, and couldn't help but bark, "Woof, woof, woof!"

Chuxue smiled even more happily: "Yes, our Zui Feng is the best dog."

Father Liu returned carrying a basket of vegetables: "What are you talking about?"

Chuxue quickly let go of the dog and took the basket from Father Liu's side: "Oh dear, didn't I tell you that we should do this kind of work? Why won't you listen? If your recovery isn't good, it could be a lifetime matter."

Father Liu knew his daughter was worried about him, and his heart felt sweet: "My leg is fine now; these aren't heavy tasks, no problem."

Mother Liu also came up to help, and the two women carried the basket to the kitchen doorway.

Chuxue looked at the vegetables inside: "Are you drying these into vegetable strips?"

Mother Liu answered first: "The vegetables in our private plot, I don't know if it's because the soil is new, but they've grown far better than those back at the old house. With the good weather these past few days, I thought it was a good time to dry some vegetable strips to keep for winter."

Chuxue looked at the sky: "Alright, leave it to me; you hurry and get ready, work will start soon."

Father Liu spoke up then: "Enough, there isn't much work; I'll handle it. You hurry and study; you have an exam tomorrow."

Chuxue smiled and pointed to her head: "I just graduated; the knowledge from the books is all in my head. I really don't need to review specially, but today I must pretend to be at home studying, otherwise others will say I don't take this exam seriously."

Seeing Chuxue full of confidence, Mother Liu didn't insist further: "Alright, then you two, father and daughter, handle the work; I must go to work now."

Just then, Chunxiao came out of the house: "Mom, what about me? Should I go to work with you today, or stay home to help?"

Mother Liu replied: "You aren't needed for drying vegetable strips; go cut grass for you and the pigs instead. If you don't go to work, you'll be crying when the grain is distributed."

Chunxiao stuck out her tongue: "Understood."
