Chapter 340: Who Ruined My Good Deed

~4 min read 765 words

Ding Youwen, unwilling to give up, circled the area once more and indeed found nothing suspicious: "Damn it, who ruined my good deed?"

Earlier, to gather more information about this place, he had specifically gone to that old woman's, not only drinking a bellyful of wine but also sacrificing his dignity, yet still learned nothing else.

But he couldn't just ask her directly while she was sober; wouldn't that make her suspicious of him?

He had searched that area for over an hour with no new discoveries, so he descended the mountain with a look of reluctance; it seemed he still had to find a way to make that old woman tell the truth.

They simply hadn't expected that everything they had just done was seen clearly by Liu Chuxue, who had climbed the mountain to chop wood after finishing her work: So this is the female lead's father; it seems those things weren't a chance encounter for the female lead, but were found because someone had prepared for it.

After they left, Liu Chuxue headed toward Shenshan, preparing to find some dead trees to chop for firewood.

Since few people entered the inner area anyway, she found three or four dead trees in no time; she chopped down everything she saw, using her machete to cut off the branches, leaving only the trunks.

She also found quite a few mushrooms around these trees; after bundling the firewood and the unsplit trunks and storing them in her space, she squatted down to pick the mushrooms, thinking she would dry plenty of them to stew with chicken in winter, which would surely be fragrant.

Not until the sun was directly overhead did she finish; there was more ahead, but if she didn't return now, her family would worry, so she decided to come back another time.

Sure enough, when she dragged two trunks to the foot of the mountain, she saw Liu's father waiting there: "Dad, why did you come over?"

"It's almost lunchtime and you haven't returned; I was a bit worried and came to check."

"I went a bit deeper inside and chopped down two dead trees; I've chopped and tied up the branches. I'll bring them back after work this afternoon. I'm dragging these trunks back; you can split them with an axe this afternoon. These trunks burn well."

"Alright, I'll split wood at home this afternoon; this is enough to last a while. Don't go into the mountains anymore. My leg can actually handle going up the mountain now, but you always worry about me."

"People often say it takes a hundred days for a sprain or broken bone to heal; you just hold on a bit longer. If it doesn't recover properly, it could be a lifetime issue."

"Alright, alright, I'll listen to you."

As the father and daughter walked home talking, Liu's father had wanted to help his daughter drag one of the trunks, but Liu Chuxue didn't agree.

Remembering something, Liu's father spoke: "The Fu family will come to propose the day after tomorrow. Take leave tomorrow and go to the commune to buy some meat; let's prepare."

Liu Chuxue replied: "No need. This afternoon I'll go into the mountains to drag firewood and see if I can hunt some game. Having meat and vegetables is enough; no need to run to the commune again. Don't worry."

Liu's father knew Liu Chuxue had a plan, so he agreed, thinking that if his daughter didn't catch any game, he could simply go to the village and trade for it; in any case, they must not lose propriety.

She had already decided to take two more watermelons home tomorrow as an opportunity, which would be perfect for entertaining guests afterward.

When they arrived home, Chunxiao was washing dishes: "Second Sister, you're back. I saved you some food; wash your hands and eat while it's hot."

Liu Chuxue nodded at her: "Okay, I'll be right there."

Hearing the commotion, Liu's mother also came out of the room: "Did you go into the inner area?"

"Mm, I only went a little deeper inside and found a few dead trees. Splitting the wood takes some effort, but it burns well. I tied up those branches and left them on the mountain; I'll go back later to bring them down."

"This is enough to burn for a while. Don't go into the inner area again later. Wait until your dad can go up the mountain in a while, and you two can go together; then I can feel more at ease."
