Chapter 351: Is Our Whole Family Really Going to Stay Here?
She caught a black carp weighing about three jin in the fresh water, immediately stewed it in a pot, then stuck three cornmeal cakes along the pot's rim; thinking of the child with the persistent high fever, she also cooked some porridge on the nearby stove.
After finishing, she packed the stewed fish and cooked porridge into two old clay pots she had previously collected from the Chen family; such clay pots were found in every household, so even if discovered, no one could trace them to a specific family.
Then she put the baked cakes into a mesh bag and only then exited the space.
Seeing no movement from the neighboring room, she gently opened the door and stepped out.
She tiptoed toward the main house; hearing that her parents were already asleep, she opened the main gate and hurried toward the cattle shed.
Since it was not far, she arrived in just a few minutes; seeing a faint light inside, she extended her spiritual sense outward.
One look was enough to reveal that this family of four was truly suffering.
Not only were all four crowded onto a single kang, but they had only two blankets so tattered they could not be more broken; an old woman with a head full of white hair, her eyes hollow, held a child of five or six: "Old Kang, is our whole family really going to stay here?"
The old man called Old Kang, who had been staring at the grandson in his wife's arms, murmured: "Xiao Ze will be fine, and we will not stay here."
Though he said this, his expression was no better; he likely spoke these words merely to comfort his wife.
After speaking, he rose, poured a bowl of water from a clay pot on the ground, and said: "I will feed Xiao Ze some more water; with such a long fever, we cannot let him become dehydrated."
The old woman said, "Old Kang, if not for the cover of night, you should go beg the Party Secretary again to let the village advance us some grain."
Stopping here, she choked up; after a moment, she continued: "Even if the two of them cannot endure and must go ahead of us first, I do not want them to die as starving ghosts."
After these few words, the old woman was sobbing uncontrollably.
The old man hurried forward, patting his wife's shoulder as if making a firm decision: "Very well, I will go."
Hearing this, Liu Chuxue quickly walked to the door, placed the two clay pots and the mesh bag at the entrance, knocked lightly three times on the door, then turned and ran to a hidden spot.
She saw the old man who had asked her for medicine during the day step out, look around once, and just as he was about to close the door, he spotted the items on the ground.
He did not approach to take them directly; instead, frightened, he shut the door.
His action startled the old woman on the kang who was coaxing the child: "Old Kang, what's wrong?"
The old man, when nervous, stuttered: "O-outside, there's something outside."
The old woman asked with a puzzled expression: "What thing?"
The old man did not answer; instead, he opened the door again, glanced outside, and after confirming he was not seeing things, he slammed the door shut with a 'clap': "There really is something outside."
The old woman stretched her neck, as if trying to see the situation outside through the drafty crack in the door; unfortunately, it was pitch black outside, and nothing could be seen clearly: "Old man, check if there is anyone outside; if no one is there, just bring the things in."
Her heart now longed for someone to come out and help them, so seeing the old man not move, she urged anxiously: "Hurry up, will you?"
The old man calmed his emotions, then opened the door again; when he clearly saw the items placed outside, surprise flashed in his eyes, after all, two clay pots were sitting there.
He quickly carried the clay pots one by one back into the room, then lifted the baked cakes from the mesh bag inside: "Old woman, they are actually hot; they were made not long ago."
For some reason, the old man immediately thought of that young Miss from today.
