Chapter 37: A Great Merit Achieved

~4 min read 691 words

Seeing medical staff approaching from a short distance, Liu's mother shot to her feet, stumbling forward to meet them: "Doctor, is there news?"

That doctor glanced at the mother and daughter, never expecting that these people from the countryside actually knew their Vice President, and that he would personally perform surgery on that injured person.

Normally she always upheld the benevolent heart of a healer, and now she dared not be negligent: "It is indeed a comminuted fracture, and two areas have already shifted. We also recommend inserting steel pins; this will aid recovery. If only a cast or splint is used, we cannot guarantee there will be no sequelae later."

Liu's mother had only attended a few literacy classes and heard all this in a fog, but Liu Chuxue, a modern person, understood clearly even without the doctor's explanation: "We will follow the doctor's advice; please arrange the surgery for us as soon as possible."

Liu's mother didn't understand these things and followed her daughter's lead entirely.

The female doctor took the surgery order form from the nurse and filled it out: "Sign up there; the patient is already undergoing pre-operative checks."

Hearing that surgery could happen immediately, Liu's mother, overcome with emotion, kept thanking the doctor. The greatest gain from her literacy classes was learning to write her own name; though her writing was crooked, she managed to sign it.

The two asked where the operating room was and rushed off in that direction.

But they had only run a short distance when they saw Kong Yizhang striding toward them.

Liu Chuxue understood that her father could be arranged for surgery like this only because Kong Yizhang had pulled some strings: "Comrade Kong, thank you so much."

Kong Yizhang waved his hand: "Don't say that. I'm glad I could help you."

Liu Chuxue thought of the man in the cave; although he had nothing to do with her anymore, she still asked: "Is that comrade alright?"

Kong Yizhang nodded lightly and lowered his voice: "He has passed the danger point, but due to excessive blood loss, he is still in a coma."

Glancing back and forth, he moved closer to Liu Chuxue: "This time, your act of saving a life has been a great merit. I have already reported it to the higher-ups. Once the reward is approved, we will deliver it to you personally."

This time, she had done far more than just a great merit; it was simply for her safety that it could not be widely publicized.

Thinking of what the doctor had said, his heart was full of gratitude. Had she not helped Fu Yan Cheng treat his wounds beforehand, that fellow probably wouldn't have waited until Kong Yizhang brought people to fetch him.

Fu Yan Cheng had been briefly conscious last night and had told him the general outline of the matter he had been tracking and investigating, and also told him the location hidden in the hand-drawn terrain map.

Had it not been for this young girl before him, everything they had previously sacrificed would have been washed away; the list of personnel who paid with their lives for this would likely have had to add one more name, and who knows how many more would have to sacrifice their lives afterward to finally bring those people to justice.

So they all owed her a debt of gratitude.

Of course, now was not the time to talk about that: "By the way, regarding your father's matter, I have already spoken with acquaintances here."

Liu Chuxue quickly replied: "The doctor just told us about it. Thank you very much."

Kong Yizhang looked at Liu Chuxue with some amusement: "Let's stop thanking each other back and forth. If you don't mind, just call me Big Brother Kong. Don't be polite with me if you need anything."

Liu Chuxue naturally would not refuse such kindness and readily agreed: "Alright, I'll listen to Big Brother Kong."

Kong Yizhang had other matters to attend to, and they also needed to go to the operating room; after a brief exchange of pleasantries, they each went about their own business.
