Chapter 385: The More You Talk, The More Ridiculous It Gets

~4 min read 670 words

Among the crowd finishing work, someone chimed in, "True, wasting so much money like that is a shame; with that money, you could do so much better."

"Come to think of it, it's strange. Since the family split, Old Liu and his wife haven't gone up to Liangmen to cause trouble; looks like they really are honest folks."

"Before, when Old Liu's wife chatted with people, she often said the old couple treated everyone equally, even giving the second branch the same consideration despite having no son; seems that was true."

"Really or not, who can say for sure? If that were truly the case, the family probably wouldn't have split."

"That makes sense. Given Old Liu's wife's love for grabbing freebies, the fact she hasn't set foot on the second branch's doorstep for so long suggests someone must be holding something over her."

"Alright, alright, you're getting more and more ridiculous."

With her cheat code active, Liu Chuxue heard everyone's gossip clearly even from a distance; it seemed there were still smart people in the village.

When she got home, Liu's father and mother hadn't returned yet. She lit the water, put the soaked sorghum rice into the pot, then scooped out some millet to keep ready.

Once the water boiled, she turned the fire down to low, went into the inner room, took the vegetables for dinner from the space, and quickly got to work.

In her past life, her maternal grandmother was a descendant of an imperial chef; under her influence, Liu Chuxue developed a strong interest in cooking. Plus, after starting work, she spent plenty of spare time learning from videos, so her culinary skills were quite good.

By the time Liu's father and mother returned, the stewed beans had just come out of the pot.

Seeing the courtyard gate open, Liu's father and mother knew their daughter had returned. Without waiting, they rushed to the kitchen door: "How did the exam go?"

Liu Chuxue didn't beat around the bush: "I passed. After dinner, I'll go find Secretary Shu to handle the household registration transfer."

Upon hearing this, the couple was overjoyed.

Liu's mother clasped her hands and silently prayed, 'May the Bodhisattva bless us,' but thinking of the current environment, she quickly corrected herself: "Thank the Party."

Realizing that might not be quite appropriate either, she added: "Thank Vice Factory Director Gu."

Liu's father was equally excited: "That's wonderful. Now let's see what those gossips can say."

Hearing the words 'gossips,' Liu Chuxue quickly pulled them into the kitchen: "Let me tell you something. Tomorrow, when news spreads that I'm going to the city for work, if anyone asks you, don't say I passed the exam. Just say I got it from someone else. As for how, don't explain too clearly."

Liu's mother was momentarily stunned: "Such a good thing, why can't we say it?"

Liu Chuxue explained: "Everyone knows we have money. Although we used some to build the house, someone might still try to target our funds."

Liu's father recalled what his daughter had said before: "Once that word gets out, people will fill in the blanks themselves. If anyone comes asking to borrow money, we can naturally use this as an excuse to refuse."

Just as they finished agreeing, Chunxiao returned with a basket on her back. Seeing Liu Chuxue standing at the kitchen door, she said, "Second Sister, you're back. Did you bring me anything tasty?"

Liu Chuxue pointed to the peaches on the cupboard: "Go wash them and eat."

Chunxiao glanced around: "No cakes?"

No sooner had the words left her mouth than Liu's mother slapped her hand: "All you think about is eating every day. Having peaches to eat is already great; cakes? You're dreaming."

Seeing her mother angry, she quickly changed her tune: "I was just asking."

She didn't know Liu Chuxue had gone to take the recruitment exam today; she thought her second sister had simply gone to the city to look for work.
