Chapter 388: Long-Term Planning

~5 min read 810 words

Guo Wenjing saw that her husband had said only that one sentence and then fell silent, and her mood instantly soured.

She thought of something: "Yanming, with your current position, you could be allocated a fairly large apartment at the unit. In previous years, you were transferred to the Northeast to support construction, and I found it inconvenient to live outside while raising the children alone. Now that Jinyue and Jincheng have both grown up, they should have their own rooms."

Fu Yanming heard his wife's words and thought it was true; their eldest daughter was already seven this year, and it was indeed inappropriate for her to continue sharing a room with them.

But the house was only this big; each of the brothers had a room, and their sister's room had been partitioned out from their parents' bedroom, leaving only the main hall.

Although the fourth brother lived in the army year-round and the second brother's room stood empty after he went to the countryside, it had been agreed that one son would occupy one room. As the eldest brother, he could not very well let his own children live in their uncles' rooms. Besides, the fourth brother would return for short stays during his leave, and the second brother would come back from the countryside every now and then; how could he bear to borrow their rooms?

As for the partitioned room their younger sister had previously occupied, one had to enter it through their parents' bedroom, making it even more impossible for their son or daughter to live there. Moreover, if their younger sister learned that her room was gone, she would likely overthink it.

After a moment of thought, he said: "Very well, I will submit the application today when we go over."

Hearing this confirmation, Guo Wenjing's mood improved considerably. Previously, she had not mentioned the matter of housing allocation because Fu Yanming had been continuously transferred to support construction, and also because the children were too young; with no one to lend a hand, she simply could not manage on her own.

Now that the eldest and second sons no longer required her worry, and the little daughter Jinyun had been sent to the Red Nursery, moving into a separate allocated apartment was completely feasible.

In any case, if anything came up, she could just send the three children back to her in-laws; the only downside was that she would no longer benefit from their daily subsidies.

Liu Chuxue got up early in the morning and saw her mother busy in the yard: "Hurry and wash your hands for breakfast. In a while, your father will accompany you to the commune. The quilts and bedding to be taken have already been packed and placed in the main hall."

Her father then entered the yard carrying a backpack basket and added to her mother's words: "I picked and harvested some tomatoes and melons; take them along with you."

She had intended to say it was unnecessary, but this was her father's heartfelt gesture. Seeing his trousers dampened by dew and clinging to his calves, she said: "I understand. Father, hurry and change into a pair of dry trousers. The sky looks overcast, and it may rain; do not let it aggravate your leg injury."

Her father nodded and went inside.

It was strange; if he had not known that his leg had indeed been severely injured at the time, he would have suspected it was all a dream.

People had previously said that for those who had been injured, the wound would act up whenever the weather turned cloudy or rainy, yet since his leg had fully recovered, it was just as it had been before the injury, with not the slightest sign of discomfort.

Chunxiao came out rubbing her eyes: "Second Sister, I will go with Father to see you off."

Liu Chuxue glanced at her: "No need. There isn't much to carry. Father will accompany me to the commune to handle the household registration transfer, and then we will return."

Chunxiao plopped down on the wooden stump under the eaves: "Second Sister, when will you be back?"

After washing up, Liu Chuxue went into the kitchen, brought out the meal, and said: "I must perform well when I first arrive. Once I have leave later, I will come back."

Her mother came out carrying a dish of cold tossed cucumbers: "Yes, this job is hard to come by. Once you go, work hard. Establishing yourself firmly is the most important thing."

Her father, having changed out of his wet trousers, came out and added: "Financial work cannot be done carelessly. You must learn more, observe more, and speak less. However, you must also be sharp and always uphold your principles."

Liu Chuxue ate her breakfast and nodded in agreement: "I have remembered."
