Chapter 402: Uncle-in-law, Are You Going to Help Me or Not?

~4 min read 732 words

In a small courtyard not far from the steel rolling mill: "Mom, it's already so late—do you think my uncle-in-law isn't coming?"

"He's probably tied up with something."

"Then what about my business? That woman has already started working—if we keep dragging this out, she'll probably have a firm footing before long."

"You've already been assigned to the factory office, can't you just let it rest?"

"I've already put the word out—if I let her have it that easy, people will laugh their heads off."

"If something blows up, aren't you deliberately making trouble for your uncle-in-law?"

"Ah, Mom, are you going to help me or not? I can't let her keep pushing me down everywhere—when am I ever going to get my day in the sun?"

"Didn't you say yourself she chose the finance post? Your two jobs don't overlap, so what's there for you to compete over?"

"As long as she's in the factory, I'll never have peace of mind—do you understand that?"

"By that logic, you're not the only one in the factory office who knows a foreign language—are you going to chase everyone else away too?"

"Ugh, why can I never make you understand."

"Fine, fine—when your uncle-in-law gets here, tell him yourself. My head is pounding just listening."

Just as the two were talking, a knock came at the door.

Hearing the sound, Lin Muni took off running outside, pulled open the big door, and after getting a clear look at the person: "Uncle-in-law, why so late?"

Shen Congjun was still carrying a bag in his hand: "The dress I promised you."

If it weren't so late, Lin Muni would have wanted to scream out loud.

Lowering her voice, she asked: "When did you buy it?"

Shen Congjun laughed: "Yesterday, when I went back to the department for a meeting—I went and bought it for you first before going to the meeting."

"Thank you, Uncle-in-law, you're so good to me."

Lin Muni's mother Mao Cailan, seeing the two of them whispering at the gate the whole time, stepped forward and pulled them both inside, shutting the big door right behind them: "Whatever you have to say, say it inside."

Then, with a hint of complaint: "Why so late?"

A flicker of guilt crossed Shen Congjun's face: "Something came up at home, left late, and on the way I ran into an old acquaintance who kept me chatting for a while—that's why I'm late."

Thinking of something, he glanced toward the house: "Where's Lin Cunjiang?"

Mao Cailan naturally understood what he meant: "Cunjiang took Mufan back to the countryside hometown, it's only the two of us women at home."

Only then did Shen Congjun feel relieved.

Lin Muni, at this point having even forgotten to file her complaint, grabbed the bag and went straight back to her own room.

After putting on the dress, she trotted into the main room: "Mom, Uncle-in-law, how is it? Pretty?"

To tell the truth, Lin Muni's skin was sallow, and the color of the dress didn't suit her, but who could blame her—she liked it, had been pining for it for ages.

On top of that, the two of them still had serious business to discuss, so they brushed her off: "Looks great / As long as you like it."

Well, Lin Muni didn't catch the brush-off either. She spun around on the spot, then finally remembered her own business: "Uncle-in-law, you've got to help me—the moment I stepped into the factory I got bullied."

Shen Congjun, hearing this: "What's going on?"

Lin Muni then gave a highly embellished account of the whole thing: "That Liu Chuxue's grades must be fishy, and she's a country bumpkin from the countryside yet more arrogant than me—don't you think that's infuriating?"

Saying this, she reached out and grabbed Shen Congjun's arm: "Uncle-in-law, are you going to help me or not?"

Shen Congjun, however, didn't get hot-headed and agree on the spot: "Here's what we'll do—I'll go to the unit tomorrow and look into it, then we'll talk. Since she crossed you, even if we can't drive her out, we should definitely vent some of your anger for you—but only on the condition that she really did what you said."

Though Lin Muni felt a twinge of guilt, thinking of her own future, she steeled herself: "Anyway, what I said is the truth."
