Chapter 422: I Just Wanted to See Their Attitude
Thinking of the gap between her own daughter's suitor and Chuxue's, her mood soured: "Xiao Man's suitor came once before and then vanished. Send a message to my third sister another day and ask what's going on?"
Remembering something else, she spoke in a low voice: "Although we've cut ties with the Second Branch, we're still one family. Chuxue is doing so well now, which has somewhat restored the reputation damaged by the Eldest Branch. If Xiao Man's suitor turns out to be a disappointment, I think it's better for Xiao Man to wait. If we can find a suitable match nearby, it would be best for her to marry close to home, so I won't have to travel so far whenever I miss my daughter."
Liu Shanling heard this and replied, "Alright. I wasn't willing to let my daughter marry so far away anyway."
The couple had already spread out their quilts, but their son still hadn't returned.
Liu Shanling slipped on his shoes and went out of the room. A short while later, he returned carrying his youngest son: "What time is it? You're not sleeping, and you won't let your eldest or second sister sleep either. You have no sense at all. Didn't you see your eldest sister dozing off right there?"
He had wanted to argue back, but one sharp glare from his mother silenced him immediately.
By the time Chuxue entered the village, it was already dark.
Seeing that some households had already turned off their lights, she recalled the power station workers who had visited the village recently, saying they would install electricity meters door-to-door. She wondered if they had finished installing them yet.
Finding a relatively secluded spot, she took out the items she had prepared from her space. Just as she was about to carry them home, she heard someone approaching.
Looking up, she realized it was her father: "Dad, why did you come over?"
Hearing his daughter's voice, Liu's father quickened his pace: "I forgot to ask you that day whether you were returning early or coming back with Fu Yan Cheng and the others. I just thought I'd check by the village entrance."
Seeing the items on the ground, he asked, "Why so many things?"
Chuxue smiled: "You've come at just the right time. I was worrying about how to carry them all back."
"So many? How did you manage to carry them all back?"
"I contacted the auntie who gave me a ride back from the meat processing plant last time. She told me their truck is heading to the North Suburb Farm today to pick up live pigs, though it might be a bit later than that day. Fortunately, I didn't even need to ask leave from the section chief to leave early."
Carrying the items together while walking, he asked, "Have you told Fu Yan Cheng about your job in the city yet?"
Chuxue felt a bit embarrassed: "No."
Liu's father looked surprised: "You haven't been in contact with each other during this time?"
Chuxue gave a soft "Mm": "He didn't come to the village, did he?"
Liu's father shook his head: "No."
Chuxue coughed lightly: "Don't mention my going to work in the city tomorrow, for now."
Liu's father was somewhat puzzled: "It's good news. Why not mention it?"
Chuxue thought for a moment: "Originally, his grandfather was supposed to come on the day of the proposal. However, because the old man's coughing illness flared up, he didn't come to avoid causing trouble for everyone."
"Fu Yan Cheng told me that when the new date is set, the old man will definitely come unless there's a special reason, and quite a few other family members should be there too. I just wanted to see their attitude so I can be prepared."
Liu's father hadn't expected his daughter to think so much: "Alright, then we won't say anything. You can tell Fu Yan Cheng privately later."
Feeling the weight of the bag in his hand, he asked, "What's in this bag? It's quite heavy."
Chuxue felt a bit guilty: "On our way back, we happened to meet some half-grown children exchanging things by the roadside for fish they had caught at the Ming Tombs Reservoir. Thinking there would be many guests tomorrow, I exchanged for a few more fish with them."
In truth, the fish had been taken from the fresh water in her space.
