Chapter 444: Kindness or Threat?

~4 min read 708 words

Liu Chuxue glanced around, stowed the makeup box in her spatial storage, and then swiftly climbed a wutong tree outside the dilapidated courtyard.

She had just found a secluded branch to sit on when she heard: "Given your current relationship with them, getting Liu Chuxue's job is likely impossible; you might as well consider what I said."

"Why are you telling me this?"

"As for why, you need not ask; just say whether you want that job or not."

Liu Chuxue watched the two standing in the ruined courtyard from above, scoffing, "I was originally thinking of finding a chance to fulfill your wishes in a few days, but I didn't expect you to be so eager to throw yourselves at my door."

Seeing Liu Jiandong still not responding, Ding Surong didn't want to waste any more time with him; the ruined courtyard was full of mosquitoes and insects, and she could hardly bear it: "Since you insist on asking, I can only say it's because someone doesn't want her to marry into the Fu family; now can you believe me?"

Hearing this, Liu Jiandong no longer suspected Ding Surong had ulterior motives: "Have you found the person ruining her reputation?"

"I'm just offering an idea; as for the person, you must find them yourself."

Fearing Liu Jiandong might change his mind, she added: "However, after the matter is settled, I can use my connections to ensure you get hired smoothly when you enter the steel mill."

Those words were somewhat ambiguous: was it a kindness or a threat?

Liu Jiandong wasn't quite that stupid; he caught the meaning in her words: "Then what about the medicine you mentioned earlier?"

"Rest assured on this; as long as you agree, the medicine will be in your hands whenever you need it."

Liu Jiandong frowned, thought for a moment, and then made his decision: "I agree to this, but when will your medicine be ready? After all, that dead girl won't stay home for long; she might leave tomorrow. If it's late, we might have to wait."

"You need not worry about that; as long as you arrange everything properly, the medicine will naturally be in your hands."

After exchanging a few more words, Ding Surong left the ruined courtyard first.

Liu Chuxue glanced at Liu Jiandong, who was still standing in the ruined courtyard thinking, and scoffed softly in her heart: "Since you brought this upon yourselves, you cannot blame anyone else."

After watching Liu Jiandong leave the ruined courtyard, Liu Chuxue finally climbed down from the tree.

When she arrived home, her father had already driven the borrowed mule cart to the bottom of the slope, and Chunxiao was feeding the mule with freshly cut grass: "Second Sister, what are you holding?"

Liu Chuxue held it up: "It's an engagement gift from Liu Zhiyuan."

Hearing Liu Chuxue's words, she immediately threw the grass in front of the mule and ran over: "Let me see."

Liu Chuxue didn't refuse: "Take it slow, don't drop it."

The makeup box was painted bright red, with a design of magpies perched on plum blossoms bringing happiness; after Chunxiao opened the box, she exclaimed with delight: "There's actually a mirror inside; this makeup box is so beautiful."

Then came a look of pure envy.

After flipping it over and examining it several times, she said: "Second Sister, can I come to your room to look in the mirror when I comb my hair in the morning?"

Liu Chuxue refused outright: "No."

It wasn't a big deal, but Liu Chuxue simply didn't want to indulge her; besides, this item was clearly a dowry gift from that girl Liu Zhiyuan and would be taken away as part of her dowry in the future; she didn't want Chunxiao to get used to it and start making demands all the time.

Hearing "no," Chunxiao immediately pouted: "Second Sister, you're so stingy."

Liu Chuxue didn't argue with her, snatched the item from her hand: "You're right; I am stingy. Please don't ask again in the future."

With that, she walked toward the house.

Chunxiao stamped her feet in anger: "Second Sister, you're too much."

Liu Chuxue ignored her completely, walked straight up the slope, and entered the courtyard.
