Chapter 472: Why Kill a Cow and Split the Meat for No Apparent Reason?
Not long after Chuxue returned to the village, Fu Yan Cheng drove over in his jeep to pick her up.
The village children saw the jeep and chased after it; even the dust kicked up along the road after the car passed did not make them complain.
As soon as the car stopped, Chunxiao ran out from the courtyard: "Second brother-in-law, my second sister went out and hasn't returned yet."
Fu Yan Cheng looked up at his own sister-in-law: "Where did your second sister go?"
Chunxiao shook her head: "I don't know. I didn't see her at breakfast; my mother said second sister went out early this morning."
Hearing the commotion outside, Chuxue's father hurriedly ran out: "Yan Cheng has arrived. Chuxue told you to wait for her if you arrived first; she went out to handle some matters and should be back soon."
Fu Yan Cheng carried a large piece of beef down from the car, closed the door properly, and walked up the slope.
Chuxue's father had just returned from morning fieldwork; seeing the meat in his hand, he asked: "Why did you bring meat?"
Fu Yan Cheng looked at the beef in his hand: "On the way here, I saw a village by the roadside splitting up beef. I stopped the car hoping to get friendly and see if I could get a share. Fortunately, I ran into an acquaintance who happened to be in charge, so I exchanged some coupons with the village for a piece."
Upon hearing it was beef, Chuxue's father asked: "Why kill a cow and split the meat for no apparent reason?"
While handing the meat to his mother-in-law, Fu Yan Cheng said: "They said that during morning work, someone slipped near the edge of the hillside field and fell down from the ridge."
Chuxue's father looked heartbroken: "What a pity. Harvest is just around the corner, yet this happened."
After entering the courtyard, he couldn't help but ask: "Which village?"
Hearing the question, Fu Yan Cheng replied: "Xia Siqian Village."
As they were talking, Chuxue returned.
Seeing her come in, Fu Yan Cheng smiled and asked: "You're back?"
Chuxue nodded: "Mm."
Chuxue's mother hurriedly called out: "Yan Cheng hasn't eaten yet, has he?"
Fu Yan Cheng didn't lie; he nodded and said: "I left quite early; the steamed buns at the state-run restaurant hadn't come out of the steamers yet."
Chuxue's mother smiled: "I steamed some cornmeal cakes and cooked some millet porridge. Have a taste."
After speaking, she called out to Chunxiao, who was still staring blankly at the beef: "Set the table and come in to serve the food; your eyes are practically glued to the meat."
Embarrassed by the remark, Chunxiao forgot to set the table and hurried into the kitchen.
Fu Yan Cheng, acting naturally, carried a table from under the eaves into the courtyard, looked up at Chuxue, and asked: "Where should I put it?"
Chuxue pointed to a spot not far from the kitchen door: "Just put it there."
Saying this, she also entered the kitchen, helped carry the cold tossed cucumber and cold tossed sweet potato vines to the table, then pointed to the wooden stumps at the main gate: "Yan Cheng, help move those few wooden stumps over here to use as stools."
Seeing that Chuxue wasn't being polite with him, Fu Yan Cheng's face was full of smiles: "Okay."
After giving the instructions, she turned and went into the kitchen, brought out a basin of water, and said to Chuxue's father, who had just come out of the storage room: "Dad, wash your hands and eat."
Chuxue's mother also called out to Fu Yan Cheng: "Sit down quickly and try my cornmeal cakes; how are they?"
She knew Fu Yan Cheng was coming today to pick up Chuxue, so she had specially prepared the dough last night.
Chuxue's father also washed his hands and came over. Fu Yan Cheng took a bowl of porridge from Chuxue's hand and immediately handed it to Chuxue's father: "Uncle."
Chuxue's father said with his mouth: "You drink, you drink."
But his hand took it, and his face was full of smiles.
After bringing everything out, Chuxue and Chuxue's mother also sat down.
Fu Yan Cheng took the cornmeal cake Chuxue handed him, took a bite, and said: "Mm, what flour is this made from? It's very delicious."
Chuxue's mother took a piece of cornmeal cake, broke it in half, and handed one piece to Chunxiao: "This is made from millet flour and a little bit of white flour. I also specially put a few dates in it. Be careful when you eat; I only washed them and forgot to remove the date pits."
