Chapter 522: Coal in Snow
After Fu Yan Cheng arrived at the cowshed, he followed what Kong Yizhang had told him and found the house where the Kang family lived.
After knocking lightly a few times, he heard someone inside alertly ask, "Who?"
Fu Yan Cheng lowered his voice and replied, "There is only one truth."
This was the secret signal Kong Yizhang had agreed upon with them during his last visit.
Hearing it was one of their own, the Kang elder quickly got off the kang and opened the door, looking around outside, "Come in quickly."
After Fu Yan Cheng entered the room, the elder said somewhat anxiously, "Didn't we tell him last time to stop worrying about us? Why won't he listen?"
Fu Yan Cheng quickly spoke in a low voice, "Uncle Kang, it's me, Yan Cheng."
Upon hearing it was Fu Yan Cheng, the Kang elder grew even more anxious, "You must leave immediately; this is not a place you should be."
He feared being discovered and implicated him.
Fu Yan Cheng quickly held back the hand trying to push him out the door, "Uncle Kang, rest assured, no one has discovered my arrival."
The Kang elder already knew from Kong Yizhang that Fu Yan Cheng's fiancée was the young lady he had previously begged to visit, and he spoke urgently, "Many people are watching us from the shadows; if someone discovers you, will you throw away your future?"
Fu Yan Cheng placed the bundle he was carrying against the wall in the dark, "Uncle Kang, I'll make this brief. The woman who reported you has likely already smuggled herself out of the country, so we cannot deal with her for now. However, regarding the man who harmed Sister Nanyue, Kong Yizhang is about to close the net; we will be able to avenge Sister Nanyue very soon."
Upon hearing his words, Kang Yuanwei on the kang finally spoke up, "Thank Kong Yizhang for me, and thank you and the brothers who have been secretly helping our Kang family. If the Kang family ever has a future again, we will surely repay this debt with gratitude."
The Kang elder also knew this was the best possible outcome, "Tell Kong Yizhang to stop here; do not risk your safety for our Kang family's affairs again. We are already content."
Fu Yan Cheng responded, "Very well. When I come again, I will leave things on that poplar tree behind your house. Keep an eye on it. If anything happens, you can also leave me a message there."
After the matter was settled, the Kang elder did not let Fu Yan Cheng linger any longer.
Using the moonlight filtering through the broken window, he pointed to the bundle placed by the wall, "Put these things away properly. Do not be reluctant to use them; only what goes into your stomach truly belongs to you."
Watching the person leave, the Kang elder closed the door and turned around. He knew everyone in the room was awake, "Yuanwei, Jinze, you must keep this kindness firmly in your hearts."
The voices of Kang Yuanwei and Kang Jinze rose simultaneously, "Dad/Grandpa, we have remembered."
Seeing his son and grandson agree, the Kang elder finally used the moonlight filtering in to open the bundle.
When he saw what was inside, he was startled, "This..."
Kang Yuanwei quickly spoke up, "Dad, I will go to the back mountain to find a place to hide these things. Later, when I go to gather firewood every day, I will bring some back."
The Kang elder looked at his young grandson, "Very well. Since that is the case, it is better to do it sooner rather than later."
Kang Yuanwei naturally understood his father's meaning and immediately got up from the kang, "Mom, Jinze, you should go to sleep right away; do not wait for us."
The Kang elder took out four steamed buns from inside, "I did not expect the two of them to be so thoughtful. Here, these have no flavor; fill your stomachs first before going out."
Kang Jinze's eyes lit up as he knelt on the kang, extremely excited. He took the bun and shoved it into his mouth, "Mm, fragrant, soft, so delicious."
His speech was somewhat indistinct.
The Kang matriarch wanted to save the buns for her grandson, but just as she was about to refuse, she heard Kang Yuanwei say, "Mom, the weather is hot now; these things won't keep. Yan Cheng is right; only what goes into your stomach truly belongs to you."
How could she not know her son's thoughts? "Sigh, I will eat."
