Chapter 557: Jealous of oneself and dragging others into it — there's really something wrong with you

~5 min read 916 words

Chuxue listened to the Section Chief's words, showing nothing on her face, but inwardly she was already overjoyed.

Wasn't this a case of a pillow arriving just when one was sleepy? Even if she couldn't find a space rich in species, at the very least she'd found a reason to bring things home, didn't she?

Not to mention, this business trip was likely to last quite a while — the Section Chief had said all three provinces had to be covered, surely there'd be chances to get something done, right? "Since the Section Chief thinks I'm capable, and everyone in the section has their own matters, I'll do my utmost to complete the task the Section Chief assigns me."

Section Chief Li liked this kind of capable and confident person in her: "Good, then this business trip is yours."

Chuxue figured she still needed to send word home: "Has the exact departure date been set?"

Section Chief Li nodded: "Wednesday morning's train, someone's already gone to book the tickets."

Chuxue wasn't surprised — after all, this wasn't the future; train tickets didn't require real-name registration, so as long as someone went along at the time, anyone could use the tickets.

Once the matter was settled, Section Chief Li offered a few more pointers before letting her leave.

Hong-jie happened to have business with her. She glanced at the Section Chief's office and lowered her voice: "What did the Section Chief want with you?"

Chuxue didn't hide it — after all, they'd be leaving early Wednesday morning: "The Section Chief said there's a business trip on Wednesday that's landed on our Section One. Everyone has their own difficulties, so she wants me to go along."

Hong-jie hadn't expected it was a business trip: "Where to?"

Chuxue glanced toward the Section Chief's office: "The three eastern provinces."

"Oh, then this trip's bound to last a while, and it gets cold early over there. You'd better keep that in mind and bring something thick to wear."

Chuxue nodded in acknowledgment: "Thanks for the reminder, Hong-jie."

"Psh, what's there to thank me for?"

She handed the report in her hands to Chuxue: "This is last month's accounts. Sort them out, and later I'll take them to the Section Chief for his signature."

Chuxue replied: "Alright, I'll get it done as soon as I can."

Wan Xiaohui, who sat at the desk next to Chuxue, naturally overheard the conversation between Chuxue and Hong-jie. Though she felt a bit put out, thinking it was a business trip to the Northeast, she couldn't help but purse her lips: the Northeast was so far away and cold — hardly a good assignment.

But feeling uncomfortable all the same, she said to Cui Haiqing across from her: "If it weren't for your family matters, Cui-ge, when would it be a newbie's turn to go on a business trip?"

Cui Haiqing was no fool and naturally knew why Wan Xiaohui was saying this. He simply looked up at her, not replying a single word, thinking to himself: being jealous and dragging others into it — there's really something wrong with you.

Wan Xiaohui hadn't expected Cui Haiqing to give her no face at all. Probably feeling embarrassed, she picked up her cup and left the office.

The office wasn't very large to begin with, and Chuxue's hearing was supernaturally sharp, so she naturally caught what had just been said: this Wan Xiaohui really does make a fuss over nothing.

But as long as it wasn't waved in her own face, she wouldn't bother caring about it.

It was nearly time to get off work when she finally finished her tasks. She now missed the computerized office work of the future terribly — set up a formula in a spreadsheet, pour in the data, and that's that.

Just as she was reporting back to Hong-jie, she heard the Section Chief calling from inside: "Chuxue, telephone."

Besides Fu Fu Yan Cheng, no one else called her. She trotted into the Section Chief's office.

She nodded to the Section Chief, then picked up the phone: "Hello, this is Chuxue."

"Xue'er, two things. First, Yizhang called from over there, saying that Zhang Erzhu got beaten up inside. Given that he was indeed framed, his family can go pick him up for treatment first. I just called the village to let them know, telling you in case.

Second, the matter you asked me to look into — I've got results. It's very likely just as you guessed, but there are still some details. I need to make a trip to Willow Village, ask Auntie, and then go find Wang Dabiao's wife to verify.

But I probably won't have time these next few days — I've got things on my end. I'm afraid it'll have to wait a while."

Hearing this, Chuxue felt a bit conflicted. She didn't know if the Zhao family still had any other relatives in this world, and if they were to acknowledge each other in the future, she wasn't sure whether it would be a good thing for Mother Liu.

What if the elders of the Zhao family had too many schemes — wouldn't that just be inviting trouble for her own family? It seemed this matter still needed more understanding before any decision was made: "Let's talk about this after you're done. And about my mom — if you have any questions, tell me, I'll ask her. It's better not to let her know for now."
