Chapter 607: An Old in the House Is a Treasure to Hold

~5 min read 843 words

If she let Great-Grandma watch her eat, she'd definitely be too embarrassed, but her craving made her want to eat it right away, and she couldn't be bothered with anything else.

Liu Chuxue did it on purpose — to put it bluntly, she wanted to back her own sister-in-law up.

Of course, she also figured that if her sister-in-law ever wanted to cook herself a little something special in the future, she'd have a ready excuse. Although the Qiu family had split into branches, their branch didn't only have her as the one daughter-in-law — the other one was pregnant too.

That way, if anyone had objections, there'd be a perfectly legitimate reason.

Looking at what Liu Chuxue brought out afterward, even Qiu Great-Grandma was a bit surprised — after all, whether it was the milk powder, the baby bottles, or the fine cotton cloth for making clothes, all of it was scarce goods, and without ration coupons you simply couldn't get them.

After a brief stunned pause, Qiu Great-Grandma said: "The baby in your sister's belly is truly blessed — you've really gone to a lot of expense."

Liu Chuxue pointed at the things on the table: "This meat sauce is Mom's — she told me to bring it over for you. These other things I picked up on a business trip to the Northeast; in a few months when the baby arrives, they'll come in handy. That fine cotton cloth can be used for clothes or a swaddling blanket — the pattern looks clean and fresh, perfect for a newborn. It took quite a few favors to get hold of it. Consider it my early investment in my nephew; when I'm old, I'll be counting on my nephew to buy this aunt of his something good to eat."

That was also said on purpose — after all, these things were hard to come by, and she didn't want some clueless person coming up with all sorts of excuses to beg them off her.

Xia Qiu laughed: "You've already been so good to him — when he grows up and makes something of himself, of course he won't forget his aunt. If he dares be unfilial, just watch me sort him out."

Qiu Great-Grandma also laughed and chimed in: "That's right."

Qiu Great-Grandma was holding the cake in her hand, unsure whether to eat it or not, when just then a voice came from outside: "The early-shift workers are back — you two sit and chat, I'll go out and have a look."

She looked at the cake in her hand — handing it back would be awkward, and besides, the smell really was irresistible; she was genuinely craving it.

Xia Qiu laughed: "Great-Grandma, finish the cake in your hand before you go out — it won't be too late."

Qiu Great-Grandma knew her great-granddaughter-in-law meant well — after all, with so many children in the house, once it left her hands it would never reach her own mouth: "Then this old woman will share in her great-granddaughter-in-law's good fortune — this cake smells wonderful just from the aroma."

After one cake went down her belly, Qiu Great-Grandma looked at the oil on her hand: "This really does taste good."

Just as she was about to say something more, she heard someone call from outside: "Great-Grandma."

The old lady hurriedly stood up: "Coming, coming — I'm in this room."

As she walked out, she didn't forget to say to Liu Chuxue: "You sit — I'll go out and have a look. Just the thing for you two sisters to have a proper chat."

Watching her hurry out, Liu Chuxue said softly: "There's truly an old person in every household, worth their weight in gold. The most sensible person in the Qiu family is Qiu Great-Grandma."

Xia Qiu laughed too: "You said it right. Grandpa doesn't bother with anything — if it weren't for Great-Grandma, who knows how chaotic this household would be. But luckily the family has split into branches now, so Great-Grandma can at least get a bit of rest."

An Xiaojing saw that her sister-in-law hadn't come out, and had originally planned to play clever and cute, trying to claim credit for the breakfast.

But just as she was about to speak, she spotted Great-Grandma standing outside the kitchen door, which scared her so badly that cold sweat immediately broke out on her forehead. She quickly changed her tune: "Mom, I was feeling really awful this morning — the breakfast was all made by my sister-in-law. My in-law's little sister came by and is inside chatting right now."

Qiu Mu glanced at her second daughter-in-law: "Still feeling really awful?"

An Xiaojing didn't dare keep up the act: "Much better now."

Qiu Mu carried the served rice out: "That's good. If your body's not too bad, give your sister-in-law a hand with lunch."

An Xiaojing quickly answered: "Got it, Mom."

Qiu Great-Grandma saw that her granddaughter-in-law had handled things reasonably well, and only then headed over to the eldest branch's side.
