Chapter 623: Rescuing Someone on a Thunderfield
Ma Wuliang heard the deputy camp commander's order: "Yes."
Having spoken, he waved to a squad of soldiers, and the formation quickly moved toward the left front.
Fu Yan Cheng led the remaining squad rushing toward the right front.
Just as they were about to close the encirclement, an accident occurred: a soldier stepped on a landmine.
When Fu Yan Cheng noticed, the young soldier's forehead was covered in fine beads of sweat: "Deputy Camp Commander, don't worry about me."
Fearing the soldier's legs might give way, Fu Yan Cheng barked sternly: "Shut up."
Shouted at like that, the young soldier actually calmed down.
Fu Yan Cheng ordered his subordinate, Company Commander Qiu, to take the men and carry out the mission first, leaving only one soldier to assist him.
Yet though the order was given, the entire formation did not move; Fu Yan Cheng understood their concern, but now was no time for sentiment: "Execute the order."
A soldier's duty is obedience; Company Commander Qiu could only grit his teeth and carry out the order.
After they had gone far away, Fu Yan Cheng said to the soldier left behind: "Go find a handy tree branch and stones of various sizes."
Upon hearing the order, the soldier replied: "Yes."
After the soldier left, Fu Yan Cheng knelt halfway on the ground, confirmed it was a pressure-release landmine, took a bayonet from his military boot, carefully dug away the soil around it, and only breathed a slight sigh of relief after confirming no booby-trap device lay beneath the mine.
To help the soldier relax, he chatted casually with the man who had stepped on the mine while working, to distract him: "Jiang Changlin, I heard your family arranged a bride for you?"
Hearing the deputy camp commander's question and recalling the letter that had arrived from home a few days ago, a smile flickered across Jiang Changlin's lips: "Yes, my mother said we're just waiting for me to take leave and return to hold the wedding banquet."
"You and that Miss haven't even met yet; how could it be settled? What if you two don't take a liking to each other?"
"That's impossible. Though we aren't from the same village, the two villages are separated only by a river. Before, I often followed my father to the neighboring village to make furniture, so I know that Miss."
At that moment, the other soldier also completed his task: "Deputy Camp Commander, what should we do?"
Fu Yan Cheng swapped the bayonet in his hand for a half-section of a thick wooden stick, glanced at the stones nearby, and said: "You move far away; if anything happens, I'll call you."
The young soldier was unwilling: "Deputy Camp Commander, tell me what to do; I'll help you."
Fu Yan Cheng had no time for idle talk: "Execute the order."
This was the critical moment; he could not spare a single bit of attention.
Hearing his own deputy camp commander's words, the soldier also knew this was no time for him to show off, and quickly retreated backward.
Fu Yan Cheng put down the dagger in his hand, took the wooden stick, dug a pit in front of his feet, glanced at the dagger beside him, and called to the teammate in the distance: "Cheng Xiaoliang, bring your bayonet."
After receiving the bayonet, he said: "Retreat to a safe place."
Cheng Xiaoliang executed the order neatly; he knew he must not let the deputy camp commander be distracted now.
At this moment, Fu Yan Cheng's forehead was covered in sweat; before beginning, he wiped the sweat from his face with his sleeve, then focused entirely, inserting the two bayonets one after another into the landmine, and pressed down on both bayonets with all his strength: "Cheng Xiaoliang, come help him untie his shoelaces."
Cheng Xiaoliang had been ready; upon hearing the order, he quickly and calmly squatted down, untied his comrade's shoelaces, and thoughtfully loosened them so the comrade could easily take off his shoes.
Fu Yan Cheng was very satisfied with his actions: "Jiang Changlin, when I say start, you pull your foot out and immediately retreat to a safe area; Cheng Xiaoliang, you are responsible for pressing that large stone on top before quickly retreating."
Both men said in unison: "Yes."
