Chapter 629: What Happened
Liu Chuxue had no choice but to spend a long while buttering people up, borrowing a clay pot, a cutting board, and a knife from the cafeteria.
After thanking them repeatedly, she briskly cleaned the fish, pan-fried it, and then set it to stew.
She had originally planned to, once the stew was on, head up to the hospital room herself and have Xiao Guo come down later to carry up the fish soup. But the moment that thought crossed her mind, she heard someone shout loudly: "What are you doing?"
She turned her head and saw a female comrade glaring furiously at a spot inside the kitchen.
She quickly turned around to look.
One look was enough—an older woman was holding a ladle and drinking the chicken soup that was stewing in the pot.
She had been thinking about Fu Yan Cheng's injuries just now and hadn't noticed what was going on in the kitchen.
The woman at the doorway strode quickly to the stove and snatched the ladle from the older woman's hand: "Who are you? Why are you stealing my chicken soup?"
Hearing this, how could Liu Chuxue dare to leave? If someone was caught red-handed drinking soup straight from the pot with a ladle, it would be disgustingly unbearable.
The older woman's eyes darted: "Don't get the wrong idea. I saw no one around and just wanted to help check whether the chicken soup was done."
"You really have no shame—caught in the act and still talking nonsense."
"I'm telling the truth. If you don't believe me, look for yourself."
The woman snatched the pot lid from her hand: "If I'd arrived one step later, this whole pot of chicken soup would have been nearly finished."
"How dare you talk to me like that! I already told you I just wanted to help check whether the chicken soup was done. How can you wrongfully accuse me?"
"Wrongfully accuse you? Dare you say this is your first time sneaking into the kitchen to steal food?"
At those words, an unnatural look flashed across the older woman's face, but she quickly recovered: "Really, can't appreciate good intentions. I won't lower myself to argue with you."
With that, she took to her heels and ran outside.
After the older woman left, someone asked the woman from earlier: "Comrade, do you know her?"
The woman put the lid back on the pot, took the ladle to the faucet to rinse it: "A few days ago I was stewing soup in the kitchen and saw her lift the lid off someone else's pot. They had a whole pot of fish soup, and she drank half of it for them.
At first I thought it was her own, so I didn't pay much attention. But then the owner came and found half the fish soup missing, and didn't even know this person. Her excuse was pretty much the same as just now. If I'd come down any later today, this pot of chicken soup would've been nearly finished too."
Hearing this, everyone was somewhat dumbfounded—no one had expected there to be someone like that.
A family member nearby said: "Didn't you report what happened that day to the higher-ups?"
The woman shook her head: "I didn't follow up on what happened after. I just thought it was a one-off, never expected today it would be my turn. What kind of situation is this?"
Hearing this, let alone Liu Chuxue, everyone present probably felt their guard go up—after all, this kind of thing was truly disgusting.
"No one's life is easy. This is meant to nourish the patient's body. This can't just be let go."
Someone suggested it, and the woman also felt that if this matter wasn't resolved, she might run into it again in the future: "This doesn't just concern me. Later I'd like to ask everyone to go and testify for me."
The few people in the kitchen exchanged glances and all agreed, Liu Chuxue included.
After all, Fu Yan Cheng was seriously injured and would probably need to stay in the hospital for a while. When the time came, they couldn't exactly stew a soup and keep guarding it here the whole time, could they?
The place everyone had borrowed for the stove was separated from the cafeteria by just one wall. With such a commotion here, naturally some of it leaked over there.
Before the crowd could go looking for them, the cafeteria's leader came over first: "What happened?"
