Chapter 680: Regret Actually Arose in His Heart

~4 min read 723 words

Fu Yanwan packed her things, took Sun Juanjuan by the hand, and headed out: "My second brother said Xiaoze hasn't eaten all day. I'm afraid he'll wake up hungry in the middle of the night, so I thought I'd borrow Aunt Cai's stove to cook some millet porridge and bring it over."

Fu Yanwan had a good relationship with Aunt Cai in the kitchen. Hearing her request, Aunt Cai didn't hesitate to grant her favor, but being responsible, she insisted on staying with them until the millet porridge was ready before locking the door and preparing to leave with them.

After thanking Aunt Cai repeatedly, Fu Yanwan and Sun Juanjuan went to the clinic.

Seeing his younger sister arrive again, Fu Yanwei frowned and asked, "It's so late; why have you come again? You really give people no peace of mind."

Fu Yanwan didn't explain: "Alright, I just came to bring Xiaoze some porridge. I'm leaving now."

As she spoke, she shoved the lunchbox into her second brother's hands: "We're going back. I'll come see Xiaoze again tomorrow morning."

Watching his younger sister walk away, Fu Yanwei felt a trace of regret in his heart.

As her second brother, he truly owed her; he shouldn't have withheld her things just because Hao Yanhong nagged him a few times.

Just as he was about to find a place to set down the porridge, he heard Hao Yanhong say, "Xiao Wan is really something. We haven't even had dinner yet, and she only thinks of Xiaoze. Who is she trying to fool with this lunchbox of porridge?"

Fu Yanwei finally saw clearly that his wife would twist the truth even when she was in the wrong; he thought, "You should also consider the things you've done as the second sister-in-law: 'Alright, say less. They eat by getting food from the canteen. At this hour, the canteen is surely closed and cleaned up. Where do you expect her to find food for you?'"

"But she can't just ignore us, can she?"

"Yanhong, some things must stop at a certain point. My sister is a few years younger than you; do you not feel guilty saying such things?"

Seeing sweat all over his son's forehead, Fu Yanwei stopped arguing with her, placed the lunchbox on the table, and quickly took the wet handkerchief nearby to wipe his son: "Xiaoze, wake up. Your aunt has brought millet porridge. Do you want to drink some?"

Perhaps truly hungry, Fu Yanwei, who had held little hope, saw his son's eyelids flutter a few times, and Fu Yan Cheng immediately exclaimed excitedly, "Yanhong, Xiaoze heard me speaking."

Hao Yanhong forgot her anger: "Son, Xiaoze, you scared your mother to death."

Xiaoze took a long while to open his eyes and said in a hoarse voice, "Mom, I'm thirsty."

Fu Yanwei quickly opened the lunchbox: "The porridge your aunt brought is truly a timely rain. I'll feed you right now."

But the boy was stubborn, refusing to let his own mother feed him: "I'm a big kid now; I can do it myself."

Seeing the redness still on his son's face and hearing his words, he couldn't help but smile for the first time that day: "Alright, my Xiaoze is a big kid now; eat by yourself."

He hadn't expected that with the fever just broken, the boy would regain his spirits so quickly, but he was still afraid of something going wrong, so he quickly gave Hao Yanhong a signal with his eyes.

Hao Yanhong had been sulking with him, but since it concerned their son, she put everything else aside.

On the other side, Fu Yan Cheng looked at Xiao Guo: "Go find Physician Zhao and tell him I want to be discharged as soon as possible."

"Deputy Battalion Commander, you don't know how badly you were injured before. Didn't Physician Zhao say to stay another day or two for observation, to confirm there are no aftereffects before discharge? What's the rush?"

"I know my own body. Staying here is no different from recovering at home."

Just then, the duty Physician Zhao happened to overhear their conversation and walked straight in: "Deputy Battalion Commander Fu, this time I must criticize you. Telling you to stay another two or three days for observation is for your own responsibility; don't be stubborn."
