Chapter 689: Thank You Both for Your Hard Work, Sisters-in-Law

~4 min read 769 words

Although Zhang Yurong was a little unhappy—she hadn't yet found the chance to bring up her cousin's matter with her brother-in-law—she knew this wasn't the time to talk about it.

Even though she didn't like Liu Chuxue, her cousin's matter might still require her help: "Then Fourth Sister-in-law, you rest a while. I'll go help out in the kitchen, and we'll have a proper chat later."

Fu Yanhong heard this and couldn't help glancing at his own wife: What's going on here?

Wasn't his wife the one who'd been rather resentful toward Fourth Sister-in-law because Fourth hadn't taken a fancy to her cousin, feeling it was Fourth Sister-in-law who'd stolen her cousin's opportunity?

Before she could say anything more, he simply pulled her away.

Fu Yan Cheng had previously told Liu Chuxue about the family's situation, so he naturally knew Jiang Xiaoya and Zhang Yurong were cousins. Seeing how attentive she was today, he didn't need to think twice—it must be that Jiang Xiaoya's family had learned of the matter and wanted to put in a good word.

What Liu Chuxue could figure out, Fu Yan Cheng could naturally figure out as well; besides, they had both just overheard someone calling Zhang Yurong on the phone.

The two exchanged a glance, and understanding dawned.

Father Fu smiled at Liu Chuxue and held up the bag in his hand: "Today an old comrade-in-arms came to the capital on business and specially brought guavas and papayas from the south—perfect for everyone to try."

After saying this, Father Fu still felt a bit guilty, after all this was to entertain his fourth daughter-in-law, snatched away from his comrade-in-arms.

The things were indeed brought back by his comrade-in-arms from the south, but not just for him alone.

He had insisted on letting everyone have a taste, then brought the rest back himself. Those fellows had actually ganged up on him and made him treat them to a meal at Donglaishun before letting him off.

Mother Fu took it with a smile, saying she'd go prepare them right away and they'd have them as after-meal fruit later.

Just then Guo Wenjing came over: "Dad, Mom, the food is ready."

Father Fu stood up at once: "Then let's eat."

Fu Yan Cheng, afraid Liu Chuxue wouldn't be comfortable, stayed by her side the whole time.

Mother Fu pulled over a chair with a thick cushion laid on it: "Yan Cheng, sit in this chair, the cushion will make you more comfortable."

This was something she'd rushed to finish the night before. She, as his mother, knew her own son's temperament better than anyone; to spare her son some suffering, she'd made this cushion overnight.

Once the dishes were on the table and everyone was seated, Liu Chuxue said to Guo Wenjing and Zhang Yurong: "Thank you both for your hard work, sisters-in-law."

Guo Wenjing had a good impression of Liu Chuxue: "I asked Yan Cheng about your tastes and made a few dishes you like. Eat plenty later and see if they suit your palate."

Liu Chuxue hadn't expected the eldest sister-in-law to be so thoughtful: "I've really put you to trouble."

Guo Wenjing, afraid Liu Chuxue would feel awkward: "Hai, once the New Year passes we'll be family. What's there to be so polite about with your sister-in-law?"

Mother Fu chimed in then: "It's rare for Fourth to stay home a few days. When you have time, come on over. The two of you can discuss how to fix up the bridal room—get prepared early while it hasn't gotten cold yet."

Liu Chuxue didn't refuse: "Alright, I'll come over more when I have time."

Throughout the meal, everyone else got along wonderfully—except Zhang Yurong, who had something on her mind and ate without tasting a thing.

In the meantime, Fu Yanming didn't stint on praising Liu Chuxue, and the children in the family, hearing this, chimed in with exclamations every now and then, so laughter drifted out of the courtyard from time to time.

Hearing this, the neighbors next door kept glancing toward the Fu family courtyard: "Has the deputy factory director's family got guests?"

"Looks like it. I saw they bought quite a lot of food—meat, fish, the works. Better than New Year's."

Just then a child in the family raised a hand: "I know, I know."

"What do you know?"

"It's Fourth Uncle Fu's wife who's come home."

"What? How do you know that?"

"I heard Jinyue-jiejie and the others talking about it."

"No wonder they bought so many good dishes. The fourth daughter-in-law's first visit home—they've got to entertain her properly."
