Chapter 801: This Favor, Brother, I've Noted It Down

~5 min read 801 words

Fu Yan Cheng turned his head to look at him: "Look at your worthless look—could it be that some Miss has taken a fancy to you?"

Company Commander Su struggled to hold back his smile: "Listen to what Deputy Battalion Commander is saying—I'm not as tall and big as you, but I do look fairly upright and proper, so if some Miss has taken a fancy to me, isn't that perfectly normal?"

"Oh, looks like I guessed right—spill it, which family's daughter or younger sister from our family quarters is it?"

Company Commander Su raised a hand and rubbed his head: "It's a Miss I met at the hospital before."

Fu Yan Cheng looked puzzled: "That Miss—do I know her?"

Company Commander Su gave a light cough: "It's that Liu Xiaoyuan who got cursed as a father-killer and husband-killer that day."

Fu Yan Cheng thought for a while, then recalled: "You mean the Miss whose fiancé drowned trying to save someone and lost his life, and whose in-laws kicked up a huge fuss?"

Company Commander Su nodded: "That family just wanted to cover up for their son, so they thought to strike first and pin the father-killer and husband-killer hat on Xiaoyuan. Later, people in the village who knew the truth stepped forward to testify—that family's son had already been carrying on with that widow; knowing he was about to get married, he meant to scare that boy a little, but the result was that boy lost his life."

"Then you two must be close to the happy day?"

Company Commander Su's face turned red hearing that: "That, that, after what happened, her family's meaning is for us to marry sooner, to spare Xiaoyuan from being laughed at in the village."

"Which day is it set for?"

Company Commander Su turned his head to look at Fu Yan Cheng: "Isn't it just waiting for you to come back—you know my family's situation too, my dad and mom probably can't make it, so I was thinking of asking you, Deputy Battalion Commander, to go with me."

"What are you thinking, buddy? There are so many married couples in the family quarters, none of them are far—yet you want me to go with you?"

"Deputy Battalion Commander, I'm not thinking that you just got your engagement fixed, so you've got experience in this area, and besides, we're brothers who've been through life and death together—you wouldn't just stand by and not care about me, right?"

"I get it—you can't bear to part with that little gift money, that's why you thought of me."

Company Commander Su wasn't annoyed at being seen through: "I'm just thinking every bit I can save is a bit saved."

Fu Yan Cheng glared at him: "I think I should call you Old Su the Miser—I really don't know what to say about you."

Still, he didn't refuse, knowing his family's situation was special.

Su's father had injured his leg in an accident—usually it was fine, but with overwork or on rainy days it hurt terribly. Su's mother had damaged her health giving birth and could only do lighter work. There were seven siblings in the family; he was the second, with an elder brother above him who, just after marrying, had his wife kick up a fuss about splitting the household, not wanting to shoulder the burden of the younger brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law below.

That elder sister-in-law was a tough one, declaring that if they didn't agree to split the household, she'd get a divorce and be done with it.

The Su family had no choice—couldn't have a divorce right after bringing her in—so they had to agree to let them split off and live on their own.

The burden of supporting the family fell on Company Commander Su, this second child of the Su family, so the man was twenty-six and still single. Luckily, in the past few years the younger brothers and sisters below had finally grown up, the youngest able to go to the fields and earn work points to support themselves, so he wouldn't have to send his entire salary home to support the family anymore.

Fu Yan Cheng also knew he wasn't truly stingy—he had no choice: "Now only the youngest siblings in your family are unmarried, so it really is time to think about your own marriage. If the money's tight, tell me—I'll lend it to you first to get the wedding done."

Company Commander Su had indeed rushed to come pick him up with this plan in mind, but before he could figure out how to bring it up, the Deputy Battalion Commander had already thought of it for him—the gratitude in his heart was beyond words: "Deputy Battalion Commander, great kindness needs no words—this favor, brother, I've noted it down."
