Chapter 808: Each Person

~4 min read 609 words

Bai Siqin never imagined that her sister-in-law had been working for nearly two years without contributing a single cent to the family.

But since she married in, she'd been paying household expenses starting from the second month—how could she possibly feel balanced about it?

Han Huaiming suddenly realized he'd said the wrong thing and quickly added: "Back then, I thought she wouldn't stay home much longer—she'd get married soon, and both me and your mother had jobs, so we didn't..."

His eldest son, Han Hongwei, cut him off: "Dad, let's not talk about this anymore. Instead, tell us how we're going to raise all this money."

Han Hongshan glanced secretly at her mother—she knew her mother had plenty of valuable things hidden away, but in front of her sister-in-law, she said nothing, since she still hoped to privately ask her mother for a few items as dowry.

Han Huaiming scanned everyone in the room: "I know this is unfair to you, but the situation is already here—you're still part of this family, and you must pull together."

The selfish Hongshan spoke up first: "Dad, let me prepare my own dowry—that's fine—but do you expect me to chip in for the compensation too?"

Han Huaiming stared at her for a long while: "Fine, if you won't help now, then when I recover, everything I own will have nothing to do with you."

Hongshan hadn't expected her father to say that—suddenly she pointed at her younger brother, Han Shihongtao: "What about him? Will your things have nothing to do with him either?"

After all, Hongtao was still in school, spending nothing but family money.

Han Huaiming was shocked by his daughter's selfishness: "He's still a student—what's the point of dragging him into this?"

Seeing her daughter still wanted to speak, Tian Suiyan, the mother, snapped: "Enough. If you won't help the family, don't drag your little brother into it."

Hongshan's eyes turned red with anger: "You're so biased."

At that moment, the eldest daughter-in-law, Bai Siqin, let out a light "hmm": "Hongshan, you're going too far. Just now, Dad said you've worked for two years without giving the family a single cent."

Hongshan, already feeling wronged, resented her sister-in-law for bringing this up: "Big sister, don't act like you're not jealous—you've only paid household fees for three months since you married in over four months ago. Why must you cling to this?"

Han Hongwei tugged at his wife's sleeve—after all, their sister was marrying into the Wei family, which had good conditions; they couldn't let this ruin their relationship.

Han Huaiming saw everyone fall silent: "Don't worry—I won't force you to contribute more than you can. But whatever you give today, I'll record it. When I repay my debts, I'll return every cent exactly as it was given."

This remark eased Bai Siqin's mind—after all, she didn't want her and her husband's savings to vanish into thin air.

While the Han family scrambled to raise money, Han Sihai, the uncle, returned to Haishi.

As soon as he got home and took the water his wife Ma Huizhen handed him, he asked: "Has Huaiming come by since returning from Beijing?"

Ma Huizhen shook her head: "No. But I heard he's borrowed a lot of money these past few days. By the way, why didn't you come back together?"

Han Sihai recounted what had happened in Beijing: "From now on, let's just keep it as ordinary contact. After what happened, Huaiming surely resents me for not speaking up for him. I don't want to see him anymore—it reminds me of my guilt toward Chunyi, and how much suffering my nephew endured up north."
