Chapter 813: Unless That Person Did It on Purpose

~5 min read 840 words

By the time they arrived, she had already been taken into the operating room.

Seeing her son-in-law Qiu Jinzhou there, Miao Yiqiu grabbed him and asked, "Jinzhou, how is Nianchun? What on earth happened?"

Qiu Jinzhou's face was equally anxious: "I don't know which rotten bastard scattered a handful of soybeans at the mouth of the alley. Nianchun didn't notice them underfoot and took a fall."

Miao Yiqiu, hearing this: "What was she doing out so late at night?"

A flicker of something unnatural crossed Qiu Jinzhou's face: "My mother had something to do today and went out. Yilin's brothers kept pestering that they wanted dumplings, so Nianchun thought she'd go to the Shi family's place up front to swap for some pickled cabbage — figured it was only a few steps. Who could've known this kind of accident would happen."

Xiao Xiao Laoyezi Xiao, hearing this: "You mean, when Nianchun went out there were no soybeans at the alley mouth, but there were when she came back?"

Qiu Jinzhou didn't dare be certain either: "I don't know the exact details, I only heard the general situation from Chen Jiefang."

Xiao Xiao Laoyezi Xiao felt something was off about this — after all, there were still many lingering doubts about the matter of his little granddaughter who had passed away earlier: "Yiqiu, wait here. I'm going out to make a phone call."

Though the two of them didn't have much affection between them, after living together all these years they had developed a quiet understanding.

Miao Yiqiu nodded at him: "Alright, hurry and go."

Qiu Jinzhou didn't catch on at first, but seeing the old man leave in a hurry, it suddenly dawned on him: "Mom, where's Dad going?"

Miao Yiqiu was in a foul mood, so naturally her words carried no courtesy: "Naturally to go find someone to investigate who scattered the soybeans. In this day and age, who would waste soybeans by scattering them on the road? Even if it was an accident, they'd surely pick every last one back up — unless that person did it on purpose."

Qiu Jinzhou, hearing these words, felt a surge of fury rise within him: "If I find out who did this, I won't let her off."

Though he didn't know who had done it, he figured that if it really was deliberate, the culprit was most likely a woman. But then he thought — they'd lived in that alley all these years and hadn't quarreled with anyone — for the moment he couldn't imagine who would do such a thing.

Once Xiao Xiao Laoyezi Xiao left, he didn't return even by the time there was movement at the operating room.

When a nurse came out, Miao Yiqiu and Qiu Jinzhou rushed forward together: "Nurse, how is my daughter / my wife?"

The nurse had no time to answer: "She's being resuscitated with everything we've got right now. Please step aside — I need to go to the blood bank for blood."

Hearing that blood was needed, Miao Yiqiu was scared out of her wits. If Qiu Jinzhou hadn't been there to hold her up, she would have collapsed onto the ground.

She was trembling all over: "They want my daughter's life."

Before long, the young nurse from earlier came running back and dashed into the delivery room: "The blood's here, the blood's here!"

Meanwhile, Xiao Xiao Laoyezi Xiao had made a phone call directly, getting the nearby police station to head over and investigate first. Then he notified his eldest son, and the two of them hurried over together.

Based on canvassing the neighborhood, they pinned down roughly when those soybeans had appeared, and then began checking through the possibilities.

Hard work did not go unrewarded — finally, from a child's mouth, they learned that the woman who had scattered the soybeans he had seen several times in an alley by the school. He gave a rough description; though not too clear, they now had a general direction.

This further confirmed Xiao Xiao Laoyezi Xiao's suspicion — the person had done it on purpose, and had known Xiao Nianchun was going out.

Just as Xiao Xiao Laoyezi Xiao was leading people in the investigation, Qiu Jinzhou's mother also returned home from outside. A neighbor saw her: "Jinzhou's mom, you're finally back — your daughter-in-law fell and was taken to the hospital."

Qiu Jinzhou's mother panicked at once, and the cloth bag in her hand dropped straight to the ground: "How could my daughter-in-law have fallen?"

The speaker pointed toward the alley mouth: "Some rotten bastard scattered soybeans at the mouth of the alley — don't know who."

She suddenly recalled that when she had gone out, her grandson and granddaughter had been fussing that they wanted dumplings, and her daughter-in-law had said she'd go to the Shi family's place up front to swap for pickled cabbage in a bit. She slapped her thigh: "Oh my heavens, whatever shall we do?"

Stumbling and staggering, she ran out toward the alley mouth.
