Chapter 827: That Enemy Spy Actually Escaped Halfway Along the Road

~5 min read 812 words

Although Old Lady Wu was a person who haggled over every penny, she also had her own little shrewdness.

The person who came looking for her probably hadn't expected that the old lady's powers of observation were quite strong—she had actually noticed the mole behind his earlobe.

After several days of investigation, the Gongan Bureau really did find that person, and after tailing him, they actually made quite a discovery.

Only Xiao Laoyezi Xiao, upon learning who was behind it, simply couldn't bring himself to believe it.

That person turned out to be a classmate from his youth; they had once studied together at a private school, and their relationship had always been quite good—even now they still kept in touch occasionally.

What he hadn't expected was that this person was actually a spy.

News came from the Gongan Bureau that just as Xiao Laoyezi Xiao was heading there, that enemy spy had actually escaped halfway along the road.

When the noon quitting bell rang at the steel rolling mill, Liu Chuxue had finished packing up and was just about to head out when she heard Wang Minmin from the office ask, "Why aren't you bringing your lunchbox?"

Liu Chuxue slung her crossbody bag over her shoulder: "I've got something to do at noon today."

By the time she got downstairs, Duan Ruirui was already waiting for her there: "Should we eat first, or head to the department store first?"

Duan Ruirui was a total foodie; she grinned and looped her arm through Liu Chuxue's: "Of all things under heaven, eating comes first—of course we eat our fill first, then go take care of business."

Liu Chuxue glanced at the grey, hazy sky: "Fine, let's go eat something good first, then buy yarn."

Once they were out the factory gate, Duan Ruirui spoke up and asked: "How's Little Aunt doing? Don't you think I should bring some tonics over to see her too?"

Liu Chuxue knew she meant well: "Let's skip it for the next few days. If you want to see her, wait a few days until she's discharged, then visit her at home."

These past few days, because Little Aunt had lost the baby, her mood hadn't been great—and upon learning that this incident was connected to her sister-in-law's maiden family, she took it even harder.

Duan Ruirui sighed: "Losing two children in the span of a single year—Little Aunt really is unlucky enough."

If it weren't for that jade tablet of the Xiao family, Little Aunt wouldn't have had to suffer such a calamity. But that jade tablet had already acknowledged her as its master, and with something like this happening, she truly didn't know what to say. In any case, she felt quite guilty about it, yet she couldn't tell anyone about this matter.

If she didn't speak of it, the jade tablet would remain just a legend; but if people learned that the jade tablet truly was no ordinary object, then she would likely never know a peaceful day again.

Right now her one thought was for the Gongan Bureau to pull their weight and catch the one scheming behind the scenes as soon as possible.

The two of them had come out fairly early. Once inside the state-run restaurant, Duan Ruirui got a little excited: "Chuxue, they've got shredded pork in sweet bean sauce—let's have rice for lunch, shall we?"

"Fine, whatever you say."

One portion of shredded pork in sweet bean sauce, one portion of shredded potato, two bowls of rice—done.

The two picked a spot by the wall and sat down: "Chuxue, what color yarn are you planning to buy?"

Liu Chuxue had plenty of industrial coupons on hand. Thinking that her family members had never before had the means to wear knit sweaters, she wanted to buy plenty of yarn and aim for everyone to have one of their own by the New Year.

That was what she was thinking, though she didn't say it out loud: "Let's go over and see if there's a color I like first, then we'll talk."

She hadn't expected to buy everything in one go today—she'd just wanted to go over and take a look first.

Duan Ruirui kept glancing over toward the serving window from time to time, which made Liu Chuxue want to laugh: "Have you decided what color you want to buy?"

Duan Ruirui, hearing the question, pulled her gaze back, a flicker of shyness crossing her face: "Red."

Liu Chuxue, seeing her like that: "Good news on the way?"

Duan Ruirui, whose face had been smiling until now: "My dad had already relented, and we were thinking the parents from both sides could meet and pick an auspicious date before the New Year. But with what happened to Little Aunt, I don't know if we can still go ahead with the original plan?"
