Yet all the way, Liu Chuxue had been wondering whether she was being too sensitive or if that family was truly plotting something; did Xiao Wan's fiancé even know?

Dazed, she arrived at the office only to hear a big piece of news: "Liu Chuxue, Director Wang from Workshop Three's adopted daughter is getting married today; are you giving a gift?"

Liu Chuxue looked utterly confused: "Who?"

Seeing her reaction, Wang Minmin repeated: "Director Wang from Workshop Three's adopted daughter, the one who was swapped with your cousin, Zhao Lulu."

Liu Chuxue hurriedly asked: "She's getting married? To whom?"

Seeing that she truly didn't know, Wang Minmin leaned close and whispered: "I heard she's marrying Director Qiao from the District Red Committee's son. Let me tell you, his son isn't quite right in the head; he probably just wanted the Qiao family's good conditions."

Liu Chuxue hadn't expected Jiang Suqing to marry off her adopted daughter so quickly: "Could Zhao Lulu even agree to this?"

Wang Minmin smiled and returned to her seat: "Director Qiao only has that one son, and he looks quite decent. Given Zhao Lulu's current situation, she couldn't possibly want everything; at least marrying into the Qiao family means no worries about food or drink."

Saying this, she turned again and whispered: "Rumor has it Director Qiao promised her that if she marries his son, he'll arrange a job transfer for her. I guess she doesn't want to stay at the Rolling Steel Mill anymore; she certainly wouldn't really go back to Subei to meet her birth mother."

Liu Chuxue thought that made sense, but she wasn't close to Director Wang, and there was her cousin in between anyway: "Forget the gift money; I have to stand on my cousin's side, don't I?"

Wang Minmin nodded: "True."

Preoccupied with Fu Yanwan's situation, she had been somewhat absent-minded all morning. Just before getting off work, she received a call from Fu Yan Cheng: "How is it? Any problems?"

Fu Yan Cheng took a deep breath: "This matter isn't simple. Xiao Wan was taken home by the eldest brother. I'll come over later to tell you in person. I'm calling just to let you know she's safe; don't worry."

Hearing this, Liu Chuxue understood; there must be other complications involved. Knowing that matters were being passed through layers and some things couldn't be said on the phone, she replied: "Alright, I understand."

At the Fu residence, Fu's father was staring sternly at his youngest daughter: "Xiao Wan, you have truly disappointed me."

Fu Yanwan now knew that Ren's grandfather's illness was real, but not as severe as they had claimed; the so-called critical condition had all been acted out for her.

The only thing that comforted her was that Ren Jiangfeng knew nothing about it and had been deceived by his own family; otherwise, she would have been utterly sickened: "Father, how do you plan to handle this?"

As they were speaking, Fu's mother rushed back in a flurry, scrutinized her daughter from head to toe, and asked: "What exactly is going on?"

Fu Yanming said with a look of disappointment: "If Fourth Sister-in-law hadn't happened to meet Xiao Wan and sensed something was wrong, this foolish girl would probably still be indulging in self-pity."

Upon hearing this, Fu Yanwan quickly lowered her head; indeed, she had been too naive.

Fu's mother slapped her eldest son: "Get to the point; what exactly is going on?"

Fu Yanming then said: "Regarding that Ren Jiangfeng, Fourth Brother had someone investigate him before. His character seems fine; it's rare for such a good shoot to come from such a crooked bamboo. But what we uncovered was only the surface; we don't know if he's truly a good person inside."

Fu's mother grew anxious: "Why don't you hurry up and tell us the situation?"

Fu Yanming sighed heavily: "This was a setup arranged by the Qi family's daughter; she just wanted to make the Fu family lose face."

Fu's mother wasn't foolish; she immediately realized something: "Are you saying...?"
