Chapter 881: Encountering Wolves

~4 min read 789 words

By now, Liu Chuxue knew that once the cattle and sheep were driven back to Xilin Gol, they would find another place to slaughter them, so they wouldn't be trapped deep in the grasslands.

However, the procurement department had also said it depended on the weather; if they couldn't make it in time, they would have to drive the live cattle and sheep back to the slaughterhouse for them to handle the butchering. After all, the ultimate goal was to ensure the factory workers could receive meat before the New Year.

Traveling at night was not a wise choice, as they feared encountering the grasslands' overlords, the wolf packs.

Yet if they didn't turn back soon, once the heavy snow fell, dragging such a heavy load would make it too difficult to get out of the grasslands. It was better to hurry while the snow wasn't too deep, as the roads pressed by vehicles would be easier to distinguish in the snow.

Having been jostled on the vehicle the whole time, Liu Chuxue worried about sudden incidents and thought she needed to conserve her strength. Leaning against Sister Jiang amidst the vehicle's swaying, she fell asleep. However, this time she dared not sit on that military greatcoat again; instead, she covered herself with it, since the night temperature was far lower than during the day.

Yet this sleep was quite restless. The vehicle jolted terribly as it moved, and combined with the wind howling like ghosts at night, deep sleep was impossible.

After being jolted awake twice in a row, she didn't try to continue, as by now the sky had truly turned completely dark.

Just when they still had a third of the journey left and were feeling fortunate that the trip had been relatively smooth, what they feared came to pass.

The chill of the deep night grew ever more intense. The silence around them was broken by the roar of the car engine. Suddenly, several black shadows appeared in the snow not far ahead, looming faintly in the dimness.

Liu Chuxue immediately sensed something was wrong and instantly released her spiritual power to warn Xu Chengkun: "Brother Xu, there are wolves."

Xu Chengkun felt a moment of panic, perhaps fearing Liu Chuxue would be scared: "It's fine. With Batuer here, he'll find a way. We aren't the lead vehicle; following the car ahead is the right move."

"Besides, the few men from the Security Department have guns. They are all veterans transferred from the army, and their marksmanship is excellent. They were issued plenty of ammunition when they left. Don't worry."

In fact, while saying this, his palms were covered in sweat, but he couldn't show cowardice at a time like this.

Batuer in the lead vehicle had naturally noticed something was amiss: "Looks like we celebrated too early. Tonight won't be a quiet one."

Captain Ma gently nudged the person beside him: "Wake up, there's a situation."

The person sleeping beside him was from the Security Department. Of course, the reason he was asleep was by the order of Captain Ma and Batuer; fearing such special circumstances, they naturally needed to let them conserve their strength first.

This man was the Deputy Director of the Security Department. Hearing there was a situation, he immediately woke up. Without them needing to say anything, he already knew what had happened.

He heard Batuer speak with a grave expression: "Do not panic. Speed up. Do not let them get close to the vehicles."

Those sitting in the cab were fine, but they feared the wolves would climb onto the vehicle. After all, behind the cattle and sheep, there were other comrades who had come along. If a wolf got on board, the people in the rear cargo area would be in grave danger.

When Sister Jiang woke up and heard there were wolves, she was so frightened she huddled close to Liu Chuxue: "Liu Chuxue, did you see clearly how many wolves there are? How much longer until we get out of this pastoral area?"

Liu Chuxue feared scaring her: "It's fine. The Security Department brought enough ammunition to shoot these wolves. Safety isn't an issue. Right now, the most important thing is not to let them get close to the vehicles."

Sister Jiang naturally realized that the back was only covered by a tarp; if the wolves attacked openly, they certainly wouldn't be able to hold them off.

Pairs of green, glowing eyes shimmered with cold light in the darkness, radiating a ferocity that chilled the bone. Behind the Wolf King followed more than a dozen wolves. Seeing the vehicles accelerate and break through their encirclement, the wolves let out low growls, as if threatening the convoy.
