Chapter 960: Father-in-Law Arrives at the Door
Others giving a bowl over is a favor; you still complain there's not enough meat. Though it may have been said casually, once the person concerned hears it, the flavor naturally changes.
But this is for the best; they will have no burden opening a small stove afterward. At most, every few days they can send a small bowl to Great-Grandmother Qiu, whose health is poor. After all, the elderly can't eat much; if given too much, it might end up in someone else's belly.
Qiu Shaofeng had not been at the Ding Zhiqing point for long before everything was exchanged.
He obtained half a jin of brown sugar, half a pack of White Rabbit milk candies, and several cloth coupons. Qiu Shaofeng was extremely satisfied; his walk even carried a breeze. These were all precious things. His own wife had reached her due date; these precious items would be perfect for nourishing her during the confinement month.
Having left the Ding Zhiqing point, he had not taken a few steps before hearing the sound of a car. He instinctively moved to the side, but the car did not drive past.
He turned his head and saw it was his future brother-in-law driving: "Fu Yan Cheng, why is it you?"
But the words had barely left his mouth when he saw his sister-in-law sticking her head out from the back seat: "Eldest brother-in-law, my father and second sister have come too."
Only then did he remember Fu Yanwan's words, feeling he had truly been so pleased by the things just exchanged that he lost his wits: "Oh my, look at me. Yanwan said you might come this afternoon; I was so happy just now I forgot."
Liu Chuxue, hearing her brother-in-law's words, didn't know what to say to him. If it were anyone else, they would likely find fault with him, yet he was still grinning there.
Seeing the basket on his back and recalling he had just come from the Ding Zhiqing point, she guessed what had happened: "Brother-in-law, get in the car; we'll give you a ride back."
Qiu Shaofeng quickly waved his hands: "No need, no need. Carrying the basket is inconvenient. You go first; I'll be there in a moment."
He had already prepared himself; once the car left, he would run home.
Fu Yan Cheng, however, stopped the car, placed the basket directly into the trunk, and opened the rear door: "Get in. It's a bit of a distance. Chuxue said your eldest sister's due date is within these few days; you'd better stay close."
Hearing these words, Qiu Shaofeng no longer declined.
He climbed into the car clumsily, greeted his father-in-law, and then looked around the interior with great excitement. Although he had ridden in a jeep once during the kinship recognition, he was still very curious to sit in one again.
Before the car even reached the Qiu family home, a child from outside ran to deliver the news: "Uncle Shaofeng is riding a small car! Uncle Shaofeng is coming back in a small car!"
Xia Qiu, hearing the sound, was supported by Fu Yanwan as she walked out. Seeing her own father, she didn't know why but her eyes turned red: "Father, you've come. Second sister, brother-in-law, little sister, hurry inside."
Xiao Fu carried the items prepared by the family: two pieces of cotton cloth, two bottles of canned goods, and about two jin of rice, entering the courtyard.
Qiu Fu and Qiu Mu also hurried out at this moment: "In-laws have arrived! Quick, quick, come inside and sit."
In these times, the in-laws were not the same as before. They had heard that the in-laws now worked on the railway. Although he was merely a line worker, he had become a formal employee upon entering, and they had even settled a home in the city. According to the eldest son, it was no worse than the village houses, and even when they visited, they had their own rooms.
They had heard from their son early in the morning that the father-in-law was returning to the village for the wedding banquet and would likely come over, so after lunch they had been waiting.
After ushering them inside, Qiu Shaofeng spoke with his father-in-law for a while, then took that chicken and said: "Father, please sit. I'll go process the chicken and stew it for Xia Qiu. In a moment, you all can have a bowl too."
How could Xiao Fu compete with his daughter for food? "Just stew it for Xia Qiu to eat; we won't eat any."
