Chapter 45: It

~8 min read 1,461 words

Ning Weidong and Ning Wei watched from afar, not rushing over rashly.

Having dealt with her twice, Ning Weidong knew An Ning was not simple, and he did not underestimate her just because she was a woman.

If this were truly a trap, with "hired thugs" lying in ambush outside, a small number of people wouldn't be enough to do the job, and a large number would be spotted immediately.

At the corner of the alley, Ning Weidong and Ning Wei smoked two cigarettes, and Ning Wei even went over to scout the area as if nothing were amiss.

No ambush was found; An Ning was behaving herself.

Leaving Ning Wei to keep watch nearby, Ning Weidong entered the Tongzi Building alone.

It was a mess inside; the hallways and corridors were piled with all sorts of clutter, and each household had added a stove by their door, making the hallway greasy and grimy, with the stair railings covered in layers of oil and dirt that felt sticky to the touch.

Ning Weidong stepped up the stairs.

An Ning had said it was Room 315 on the third floor.

Ning Weidong walked down the corridor, about a third of the way, and on the left-hand side facing south, there was a metal plate with "315" hanging on the door.

He raised his hand and knocked.

An Ning's voice came from inside: "Please wait a moment."

After about three or four seconds, the door opened with a "click," and An Ning stood inside, turning slightly to the side as she said, "Please come in."

Seeing her, Ning Weidong showed an expression of surprise.

Today, An Ning had clearly dressed up carefully; she was actually wearing a goose-yellow satin qipao, with a pair of mid-heel leather shoes on her feet, and her hair had been meticulously styled. Especially from this angle, standing with her back to the window, the morning sunlight shining in made her look exceptionally bright and beautiful.

Ning Weidong subconsciously looked up at the door number.

Of course, it was impossible to have gone to the wrong place, he just felt that this situation was not quite right.

Damn it, I was just worrying about whether there was an ambush, and now you give me this.

Anyone who didn't know better would think we were having an affair~ Ning Weidong glanced into the room.

This kind of Tongzi Building usually only had one room; some families with many people would put up partitions, but An Ning's place did not.

The room was clear at a glance.

It was about thirty-some square meters; by the door was a washbasin stand, and on the right-hand side was a row of cabinets, in order: a wardrobe, a low-and-high cabinet, and a chest of drawers.

The most eye-catching item was a television set placed on the low-and-high cabinet.

In a few more years, there would be a wave of buying televisions, and even color TVs.

But for now, a television was still a rare item for an average family.

Directly facing the television was a coffee table and a set of sofas, dividing the rectangular room into two areas.

Further back was a double bed covered with a blue-and-white checkered bedsheet, and next to it was a rather large full-length mirror.

The floor and the waist-high wainscoting were painted with light blue sanitary paint, and combined with An Ning, who stood tall and graceful in her qipao, the place exuded a bourgeois style that was out of place for the era.

Ning Weidong stepped inside and closed the door behind him, feeling a bit confused about what medicine this woman was selling in her gourd.

He thought to himself that last night, she had used both threats and inducements.

And now she was pulling this stunt; could it be that Wang Jingsheng wasn't up to the task, and this woman wanted to find someone to borrow seed from?

"You sit down first, I'll go make some tea." An Ning gestured toward the sofa and turned to open the low-and-high cabinet under the television.

Because the cabinet was a bit low, it forced her to bend over slightly, further highlighting her alluring hip line, which looked exceptionally slender under the adornment of the qipao.

"This woman, using this to test a Cadre." Ning Weidong criticized her in his heart, but that didn't stop him from taking a few extra looks.

I have to say, this water-satin material is truly good. An Ning took the tea leaves, seemingly sensing Ning Weidong's gaze, and with a meaningful expression, she returned to the coffee table and sat down.

"Wuyi Mountain rock tea." She said, brewing it unhurriedly.

Before he transmigrated, Ning Weidong had seen a bit of the world, and coupled with that era of information explosion, he wasn't about to be intimidated by this woman. He laughed and said, "Oh? The Oolong tea from Fujian has a unique flavor; I didn't expect you to have such a good thing, Sister-in-law."

An Ning was a bit surprised; in Wang Jingsheng's description, Ning Weidong was just like him, a roughneck who had just fooled around in school and learned nothing.

She hadn't expected Ning Weidong's range of knowledge to be so broad; he not only knew that Wuyi rock tea was an Oolong tea, but also that it was from the southern region of Fujian.

But that was all; perhaps he had just happened to hit upon Ning Weidong's area of knowledge, not enough to make her overly surprised.

She smiled lightly: "Given the relationship between you and Wang Jingsheng, which is thinner than paper, you'd better not call me Sister-in-law; it sounds quite grating. Just call me Sister Ning, or if you don't like calling me sister, Xiao Ning is fine too."

Ning Weidong guessed that the marital relationship between Wang Jingsheng and An Ning was problematic; An Ning was being even more direct, not even bothering to pretend? What did this mean? Ning Weidong pondered inwardly.

An Ning pushed the teacup forward: "Try it."

Ning Weidong picked it up and took a shallow sip; it wasn't particularly good or bad, and he didn't offer any praise. He put down the teacup and went straight to the point: "Speak, what do you want with me? If there's nothing, I'm leaving."

Although he said he was leaving, Ning Weidong had no intention of getting up.

An Ning pursed her lips and said: "I heard that you knocked down Zhou Wu, one of Zhang Jinfa's men, in a single encounter?"

Ning Weidong knew that An Ning must be talking about the one he had "restarted" with a single punch.

So that man's name was Zhou Wu.

There was no need to deny it; anyway, Zhang Jinfa and Wang Jingsheng had both concluded it was him, so it was him.

Matters in society were not like a case at the Police Station; one didn't necessarily have to provide evidence.

Ning Weidong raised an eyebrow: "What of it? Do you have some ideas?"

An Ning smiled, lifted the front hem of her qipao with both hands, and slowly crossed her legs: "I do have some ideas, I'm just afraid you can't handle them."

"Trying to provoke me into it?" Ning Weidong sneered.

An Ning's heart sank; Ning Weidong's reaction was not within her expectations.

The person in front of her was completely different from the one Wang Jingsheng had described.

She was distracted for a moment, and Ning Weidong glanced at the clock on the wall and stood up without any hesitation: "Forget it, let's leave it at this for today. If there's anything else, we'll talk about it next time."

After saying this, he didn't wait for An Ning to agree and walked straight out.

An Ning didn't move, clenching her fists tightly. When Ning Weidong closed the door with a "bang," her expression turned even gloomier. It took a deep breath for her to calm her mood.

She gritted her teeth and said: "Little brat, just you wait!"

She got up and went to the large mirror in the room.

Hands on her hips, she looked at herself in the mirror; the form-fitting satin cheongsam accentuated her figure even more, complemented by her deliberately styled makeup and hair accessories.

Just a moment ago, she had even hinted that Ning Weidong could make some excessive demands.

But damn it, the result was that this guy just left as soon as he said he would.

However, that last sentence of Ning Weidong's had left a crack in the door.

The implication was, if you have something, we can talk.

But when to talk, and where to talk, is not for you to decide, but for me to decide.
