Chapter 85: They Are Bullying People Too Much
Returning to the office from downstairs, Wen Aiying asked, "Did something happen at home?"
Ning Weidong said, "It's nothing, my younger brother had some business at home, so I sent him back."
Wen Aiying didn't ask further; she had just asked out of casual politeness. Being in the same office, having heard it, it would have been unreasonable to ignore it completely.
Until the end of the workday, Chen and Feng Wen did not show up.
Ning Weidong and Wen Aiying left work right on time.
Arriving outside the South Gate, Ning Weidong pushed his bicycle, scanning the area outside the factory, and quickly spotted Wang Xuewen.
Wang Xuewen had managed to get his hands on a dilapidated bicycle from somewhere and was standing not far outside the gate, stretching his neck to look around.
Not far away, under a roadside tree, Ning Wei stood holding his bicycle.
Ning Weidong, on the other side of the road, caught Ning Wei's eye, then calmly got on his bike and rode away.
Since he had handed the matter to Ning Wei, Ning Weidong did not intend to intervene again; he believed Ning Wei had the ability to solve the problem independently.
He rode his bike back home.
While calculating how to phrase things to tell Ning Weiguo and his wife about the day's situation, Ning Weidong pushed his bicycle through the gate of the Dazayuan.
Ever since he was transferred to the Office Building, Ning Weidong had changed from shift work to day shifts, so his commuting hours coincided with most people's.
At the time he got off work, the courtyard was at its busiest; everywhere he looked were familiar faces, and he exchanged greetings as he went.
Ning Weidong entered through the gate arch and was about to turn toward the East Cross Courtyard when he saw Wang Kai heading out.
Wang Kai was already unremarkable in appearance, but now he looked even more wretched; he didn't know how many days it had been since he washed his hair, he was shuffling in cotton-padded shoes, looking listless, and one could smell the stench of distiller's grains from two meters away.
Ning Weidong gave a perfunctory "Brother Wang" and, without paying him much mind, entered the cross courtyard.
Before he could even park his bicycle, he saw Bai Fengyu poking her head out from her home; it was clear she had been waiting for him, watching from inside the room the whole time.
Ning Weidong knew there must have been progress regarding the Ma Family, so he parked his bike and walked over.
Taking advantage of the fact that there was no one in the courtyard, Bai Fengyu hurriedly pulled him into the room.
Ning Weidong asked, "What did the Ma Family say?"
Bai Fengyu said with a bitter face, "They won't budge; they are determined to drag it out."
Ning Weidong curled his lip, thinking to himself that Ma Liang's parents were not kind-hearted people either.
In two more days, it would be time to pay back the money, and dragging it out now clearly showed they wanted to welsh on the one hundred yuan the original owner had helped pay back previously.
Ning Weidong estimated that this was only the first step; subsequently, they would try to drive Bai Fengyu and her sister away, take back their house, or simply sell it.
Bai Fengyu had also thought of this, which was why she was so anxious.
However, this matter really didn't amount to much for Ning Weidong.
During the day, in order to keep an eye on Deputy Factory Director Liu, he had casually given Ning Wei five hundred yuan; in the end, Bai Fengyu's situation was only a matter of two hundred yuan.
Ning Weidong said unhurriedly, "Sister, you don't need to worry about the creditor. The main conflict now is with the Ma Family. The money was owed by their son, yet they insist on pinning it on you... Can you swallow this insult?"
Anger appeared in Bai Fengyu's eyes.
Back when Ma Liang ran off, they had been husband and wife after all; she hadn't expected the Ma Family to scheme against her like this.
It was she who had run around everywhere, finally managing to classify Ma Liang's flight as a disappearance, minimizing the impact of the incident.
And today, learning one thing made her feel even more chilled.
Bai Fengyu said, "Weidong, I heard something today: the Ma Family might have sold Ma Liang's job..."
Ning Weidong was stunned, then his thoughts raced, and he guessed what was going on.
He was also somewhat surprised, not expecting the Ma Family to have such underhanded tactics. It was a coincidence today; Bai Fengyu had gone to find Ma Liang's parents and met a former female colleague of Ma Liang's, and they chatted for a bit.
That female colleague had been unintentional, sighing and lamenting that it was a pity for Bai Fengyu that Ma Liang's job had actually fallen into the hands of an outsider.
She even asked Bai Fengyu why she hadn't taken over the position back then. Bai Fengyu was dumbfounded on the spot.
Last year, when Ma Liang suddenly ran off, Bai Fengyu was caught off guard. When it came down to it, she was just a woman in her twenties; before Ning Weidong transmigrated, that age was still a baby, and even if she was bright and clever, she lacked experience and had no idea how to deal with it.
At the time, it was the Ma parents who were in contact with Ma Liang's workplace.
Later, the Ma parents told her that since Ma Liang had disappeared without a trace, the job was definitely gone.
Bai Fengyu did not suspect them; although she felt it was a pity, she was helpless and could only focus all her energy on keeping the house.
She racked her brains and used every ounce of her strength to get the Street Office to classify Ma Liang as missing.
Who would have thought she would learn from Ma Liang's colleague that Ma Liang's job hadn't been lost at all, but had been given to someone else! Bai Fengyu was almost bursting with rage.
This was simply outrageous! For this to happen, there were only two possibilities: either the person who took the job was some relative of the Ma Family, or the Ma Family had sold the job behind her back.
Upon hearing this, Ning Weidong also found it unbelievable.
The Ma Family really was calculating to the extreme; Ma Liang used to work at the food factory, and the job was quite good.
If they really encountered someone with a good family background who had the need, it wouldn't be impossible to get one or two thousand yuan in exchange for this job.
If the Ma Family really sold the job behind Bai Fengyu's back while still scheming to make Bai Fengyu pay back the three hundred yuan Ma Liang owed, that would be truly unreasonable.
Ning Weidong thought for a moment and said, "Sister, don't be anxious yet, and there's no need to get angry."
Bai Fengqin gritted her teeth and said, "How can I not be angry? When I married into the Ma Family, I did my best, gave my heart and soul, and lived my life with that Ma Liang, but what did I get in return? They... they are bullying people too much."
The more she spoke, the sadder she became, and unable to hold it back any longer, she threw herself onto Ning Weidong and began to sob.
Ning Weidong patted her back, able to guess the Ma Family's thinking.
Their son had run away, and given Bai Fengyu's age and looks, and the fact that they had no children, it was impossible for her to stay.
Rather than letting Bai Fengyu have the job, it was better to sell it directly for money.
But from Bai Fengyu's perspective, their actions were simply bullying her too far.
Fortunately, Bai Fengyu knew that now was not the time to cry; after sobbing a few times, she held it back and said pitifully, "What do you think I should do?"
Ning Weidong said, "Don't be anxious about this yet. We can't just believe every rumor we hear; if we get it wrong, we'll be in a passive position."
Bai Fengyu calmed down and nodded vigorously.
Right now, Ning Weidong was her backbone.
Ning Weidong said, "Do this: tomorrow, go straight to Ma Liang's workplace and find the person who took over Ma Liang's job. Don't beat around the bush; just go straight to them and question them."
Bai Fengyu's eyes lit up; this was indeed the fastest and most effective method.
Although buying and selling jobs privately was not rare, it was not something that could be brought out into the open, and if one were to really get serious about it, it was not compliant with regulations.
If Bai Fengyu went to find them, the other party would certainly be very wary and would never cover for the Ma Family.
Bai Fengyu said, "Mm, I understand!" But she was still a bit worried: "But the day after tomorrow..."
Ning Weidong patted her bottom: "What are you afraid of? If the Ma Family really deceived you and secretly sold Ma Liang's job, this matter will actually be easier to resolve."
Bai Fengyu rolled her eyes, and in an instant, she understood what Ning Weidong meant.
