Chapter 146: The sound of the pottery flute (Please subscribe!)

~11 min read 2,160 words

Nanjing Road is the big road in Shanghai, ten miles of long streets, flourishing, famous in the world.

And at Fudan, there is also a big road, which is the Guanghua Avenue of later generations, nicknamed "Nanjing Road" in the 1980s.

Why is it called "Nanjing Road"?

Because it is the longest east-west avenue on the Fudan campus, nearly 800 meters long, lively and noisy. Whenever class starts, the flow of students moves from east (dormitory building) to west (teaching building); after class, everyone moves from west to east, rushing to the dormitory and cafeteria.

There are shops lined up on both sides of Nanjing Road in Shanghai.

On both sides of Fudan's "Nanjing Road," there are columns and wall newspapers. The content is varied, attracting many students every day. Nowadays, there are no computers, mobile phones, let alone the Internet. Fudan's latest news, entertainment gossip, as well as poetry and novels mainly appear on "Nanjing Road."

Entering from the front gate of Fudan, the first thing you see is the statue of the great man. After Li Heng stopped to pay homage, he and Zou Ping appeared on the campus Nanjing Road. The two didn't care about those poems and news, but were carefully checking along the bulletin board. It was just a pity that they didn't find any small advertisements for renting houses after searching for a long time.

He felt around the various small advertising stickers nearby again, but still found nothing.

Half an hour passed, the two looked at each other, and their faces slowly became heavy.

Zou Ping comforted: "Let's just go directly to the teaching staff dormitory area to see, maybe there are some there."

Li Heng thought about it and nodded, only to be able to do so.

Fudan teaching staff dormitories are generally distributed on Guonian Road, Guoquan Road, and Guoshun Road. They are actually independent staff allocation houses, the beginning of saying goodbye to collective dormitory life in school.

Speaking of Fudan dormitories, they actually have a history. In the past, they were called "Three Villages and Sizhuang," also known as "Fudan Villages," with one or two hundred bungalows, small buildings, and row buildings left over from the Japanese occupation period, forming "village houses." It is the general term for the dormitories of teachers and students when Fudan returned to Shanghai from Chongqing.

They are Lushan Village, Xu Hui Village, Jialing Village, Virtue Village, Bamboo Village, Pine Village, and Elm Village. They imply seven place names: Lushan, Xujiahui, Jialing River, Hede Road, Guiyang, Wusong, and Chongqing.

After liberation, in order to cut off from the "old Fudan," many place names and building names in Fudan were renamed, and many were replaced by Arabic numerals—since then, the names of "Three Villages and Sizhuang" no longer exist.

For example, Lushan Village was renamed the First Dormitory, Xu Hui Village was the Second Dormitory, Virtue Village was the Third Dormitory, Jialing Village was the Fourth Dormitory, Bamboo Village was the Fifth Dormitory, Pine Village was the Sixth Dormitory, and Elm Village was the Seventh Dormitory.

The first place Li Heng and the two ran to was Jialing Village, also known as the Fourth Dormitory, three rows of four-story buildings, eaves and tile roofs, the exterior was gray and old, all large single rooms. Generally, they were staff rooms for those who had left single life, the starting stage of Fudan's housing allocation system.

Although the rooms were large, the kitchen and bathroom were shared in public areas. The "tiger stove" for boiling water was at the bottom of the middle building. Opposite the dormitory were the labor union, the middle canteen, and the playground.

Li Heng shook his head after reading it. Damn it, he had a set of cooking skills, and he couldn't get used to Shanghai food. This was too inconvenient.

But even so, even though he was very dissatisfied with such a teaching staff dormitory, there were still no rooms for rent.

Taking advantage of the early sky, the two wandered around the Third to Seventh Dormitories, and the result was that people were almost exhausted, but still nothing.

Zou Ping looked at the mechanical watch on his left hand and cheered up: "Don't be discouraged, there are still Lushan Village (First Dormitory) and Xu Hui Village (Second Dormitory), let's go ask."

Li Heng didn't hold any hope for this.

If there is a grade for teaching staff dormitories, then Lushan Village and Xu Hui Village are undoubtedly at the top of the pyramid. The number of houses is the smallest, but the housing conditions are the best, and those who live inside are all top scholars and celebrities in the country.

For example, in Lushan Village, there lived Chen Wangdao, Wu Lifu, Zhang Mingyang, Hong Shen, Quan Zengxia, Zhang Jinyi, Lu Yudao, and other awesome professors.

Xu Hui Village is not far behind, with Wang Dong, Zhou Gucheng, Zhou Yutong, Jiang Tianchu, Qi Qisheng, Xiao Qian, Fang Lingru, Zhang Mengwen, and other fierce people.

Principal Zhang Yi also lived in Xu Hui Village, and the 31 and 32 buildings he lived in were called "Zhang Mansion."

Li Heng was already tired of walking, but thinking that he urgently needed a quiet place to write, he followed, otherwise what else could he do?

Only this.

The two brought a lucky mood and patiently searched for more than an hour. Seeing that the sun was about to set and it was almost time for dinner, the result was still empty and hit a wall everywhere.

"Old Li, let's rest for a while, my legs are cramping, I can't walk."

At the entrance of a courtyard in Lushan Village, Zou Ping, who was looking around, suddenly fell, fell into a dog-eating shit, climbed up with an "ouch," and sat on the red brick steps next to him.

Li Heng, who was behind, hurriedly walked over and asked with concern: "Old Zou, are you okay?"

"It's okay, it's okay, let's rest for a while and then go." Zou Ping pointed to the clean red brick on the right, signaling him to sit down.

Sweating profusely, indeed very tired, Li Heng gasped for breath and really sat down on his butt.

Zou Ping looked at the small building opposite and suddenly sighed, "The living environment here is really good."

Can it be bad?

You know, Lushan Village was originally a residence for Japanese officers and senior staff, with more than 20 two-story small buildings, each with its own courtyard, attic, drying terrace, and storage room upstairs, and kitchen and bathroom inside, with gas and flush toilets.

However, Li Heng didn't answer, but put his attention on the melodious pottery flute sound.

The sound came from this small building in front, and the song played was *Clouds of Hometown*, with a beautiful, crisp, and loud sound, with a unique charm.

Zou Ping also seemed to be immersed in the pottery flute sound, and only after one song was finished did he speak again, "Being able to play such a calm tune, I think this person must be a delicate and peaceful person."

Li Heng agreed with this. Just like drinking and tasting people, the rhythm can also distinguish people.

After listening to another song, Zou Ping stood up and said, "Old Li, let's go to Yanyuan to see, maybe there are vacant rooms in the Red Building."

Li Heng didn't move, but looked up at the young man on the attic balcony diagonally opposite. The other party was sitting on his knees on the balcony, twisting a string of red prayer beads with his hand, and also looking down at Li Heng from a high position.

Or rather, Li Heng had been sitting for as long as the other party had been looking at Li Heng.

Seeing that the situation was wrong, Zou Ping looked up along his line of sight and was stunned: "Eh? When did this person appear? Why didn't I find him before?"

Li Heng said: "He has always been there, but the other party is meditating and realizing the Dao, uh, let's just say he is realizing the Dao. Anyway, I saw him as soon as I looked."

Zou Ping was puzzled: "Why is he looking at you like this?"

Li Heng said: "Could it be that we have been looking around all the way and treated us as thieves?"

Don't talk about this, it's really possible. Zou Ping has been questioned by several waves of people today.

After looking at each other for a while, just when Li Heng was impatient and was about to get up and leave, two people walked into the alley, a man and a woman.

The woman was very vigilant, sized up Li Heng and Zou Ping, and couldn't help but question: "What are you two doing? Why have you been hanging around here? If you don't leave, I'll call someone."

Li Heng was speechless. He had seen this woman. When he entered Lushan Village before, he ran into her and a group of people hanging their legs on the wall eating popsicles.

Zou Ping had experience in this matter, and hurriedly explained: "Don't misunderstand, we are looking for a house to rent, and we are tired from walking, so we came here to rest for a while."

As he spoke, under the other party's disbelieving eyes, he took out his work permit from *Harvest* magazine and handed it over.

The woman took the work permit, lowered her head to look, distinguished the name, department, and position above, and asked after a long time: "Are you an editor of *Harvest* magazine?"

Being an editor at *Harvest* magazine is a glorious job. Zou Ping nodded and said yes.

"*Harvest* magazine is not in Jing'an District, why did you run here to rent a house?" The man beside him asked at this time.

Zou Ping pointed to Li Heng, "Renting for him, he is a Fudan freshman this year."

The man and woman looked at each other. The woman suddenly raised her head and shouted to the Taoist on the attic: "Fu Fu Fu Yanjie, didn't you say you were bored living alone? Someone wants to rent a house."

Fu Fu Fu Yanjie???

Li Heng almost vomited. Damn, who took such a name? It's really, simply...

"Don't be big or small, your living expenses for this month are gone." Fu Fu Fu Yanjie remained unmoved, speaking slowly, his right hand continuing to twist the prayer beads one by one.

"Brother, someone wants to rent a house." The woman shouted.

"I'm not deaf." The Taoist Fu Fu Fu Yanjie collected his mind and closed his eyes.

"This person is an editor of *Harvest* magazine." The woman said.

The Taoist was unmoved. Obviously, the editor identity didn't work here.

The woman probably figured out her brother's temper. Seeing that there was no drama, she shouted: "Brother, have you finished dinner? I'm hungry."

The Taoist said: "Today is fasting, no food after noon."

Listening to the strange conversation between the two, Li Heng and Zou Ping looked at each other and walked towards the Yanyuan Red Building.

As a result, the result of a tour was still empty.

Li Heng sighed and said: "Forget it, it's getting late, let's go back and solve the stomach problem first."

Zou Ping felt that he could only do this for the time being, so he drove the small van and the two returned to Passing Passing Wujiaochang.

Dinner didn't go to the Blue Sky Hotel. There were too many people and no seats at all. They found a small restaurant on the side of the road to deal with it.

When eating, Li Heng said: "Old Zou, you go back to the magazine office to work tomorrow. I have to report for school, and I guess I won't have much time all day."

Actually, reporting for school takes at most half a day, but he was still thinking about Xiao Han, the black-bellied young lady. He had to go there in the afternoon no matter what.

As for why he didn't go tonight, he could figure it out with his toes. Today school hadn't started, and Xiao Hai and Wei Wei Wei Shiman must be accompanying their precious daughter. Going over now would undoubtedly be walking into a trap.

For a moment, he really thought about showing his face in front of Wei Wei Wei Shiman and the two, to frustrate Xiao Han's spirit.

But considering the consequences of showing his face, he extinguished the thought.

He didn't just want one, his ambition was great. He didn't want to give up Song Yu, Xiao Han, and Chen Chen Chen Zijin. Acting rashly was a bad strategy.
