Chapter 188: , The English Teacher
The English teacher entered the ward.
The hospital corridor suddenly fell silent, leaving Li Heng, Yu Shuheng, the music teacher, and the cousin looking at each other.
Out of worry, the four of them didn't talk much at first.
The music teacher and the cousin stayed for a while, then, thinking of something, they went off to get busy.
Yu Shuheng stood at the window, looking into the distance without saying a word. After a long while, she turned and came to sit beside Li Heng, sitting on the long bench.
She said: "I specifically looked into this kind of surgery; it usually lasts for more than an hour."
Li Heng raised his right wrist to look, noting the time.
Thinking of the letters Runwen had sent him in the past, and thinking of how he was in every letter, Yu Shuheng suddenly asked: "What year were you born?"
Li Heng was startled and replied: "Early May, 1969, lunar calendar."
After saying this, he looked at her, curious about the specific age difference between her and the English teacher.
Yu Shuheng seemed to guess his thoughts and mused: "I was born at the end of November 1962; I'm 26 years old this year."
The English teacher was born in February of the first half of 1961; the two were a year and a half apart.
Li Heng asked: "Did you also study English as a major?"
Yu Shuheng said: "Yes, Runwen and I were classmates and roommates."
"No wonder your relationship is so good. I often heard Teacher Wang mention you when I was in high school," Li Heng said.
To reduce the worry in her heart, Yu Shuheng spoke a bit more than usual: "What did she say about me?"
Li Heng said: "She said you were multi-talented, um... and also, to tell me not to make you angry."
Yu Shuheng smiled elegantly: "Do you often make her angry?"
"How could I? Her temper is much fiercer than mine; she's always telling me to get out, and from time to time she even kicks people," Li Heng said.
Yu Shuheng laughed, thought for a moment, and said: "Runwen cares about you a lot in her letters."
"I know. She was very good to me during my three years of high school," Li Heng suddenly lost his mood and said in a low voice.
At this point, the conversation between the two suddenly broke off, and the corridor fell into dead silence again.
After a long while, he made small talk: "I especially hate hospitals. I always feel that this kind of place is gloomy and terrifying, and everywhere is permeated with ominousness."
"Don't worry, Runwen will be fine."
Yu Shuheng comforted him, then added: "Earlier in the ward, she kept praising that the sequel to your 'Cultural Bitter Travel' is even better. Do you have it with you?"
Li Heng took out the remaining manuscripts from his bag and handed half to her.
Yu Shuheng took them, opened the pages, and before long, became engrossed, immersed in the text and unable to extricate herself. Occasionally, she would savor a certain passage once or twice.
With the manuscript for company, time passed quietly and quickly; an hour flew by in the blink of an eye.
Glancing at the electronic watch on his right wrist, Li Heng stood up and went to the operating room door, trying to peer through the crack in the door, but it was a mess, and he couldn't see anything.
Yu Shuheng sat still, looked up at him as he leaned against the door, and then continued to lower her head to savor the book.
10 minutes later, Li Heng sat back down.
Another 5 minutes later, he stood up and paced back and forth in the corridor. His footsteps were neither loud nor hurried, but his face was full of worry.
At this time, Yu Shuheng was no longer so calm. She closed the manuscript, her gaze lingering on him, and she paced unconsciously as well. Clearly, she had also started to worry, afraid that the big door would suddenly open and a doctor would tell her: Sorry, we did our best.
The cousin and the music teacher rushed back. The expressions on the two women's faces were even more anxious than Li Heng's and Yu Shuheng's; the cousin was even about to cry from anxiety.
Another 5 minutes passed, and the operating room door made a sound. The four of them turned their heads to look at the same time.
In the long wait, the operating room door finally opened a crack, and a doctor emerged.
The four of them swarmed over and asked urgently: "Doctor, how was the surgery?"
The doctor was about 40 years old and couldn't help but look at Yu Shuheng a few more times, then said: "It's fine, the surgery was quite successful."
Hearing this, the four of them really let out a big sigh of relief and hurriedly said thank you. The cousin even secretly slipped him a red envelope.
The doctor tucked the red envelope into his pocket and couldn't help but glance at Yu Shuheng twice more before leaving.
Before long, the English teacher was pushed out of the operating room. She pursed her lips at the four people guarding the door: "Thank you for your hard work."
Li Heng asked: "Teacher, how are you feeling?"
The English teacher said: "It's alright, I just want to sleep a bit."
The nurse reached out to push the four away, signaling them not to get too close: "There was almost heavy bleeding during the surgery. The patient is very weak now and needs quiet rest. Don't disturb her."
Hearing this, the nerves of the four, who had just let out a big sigh of relief, instantly tightened again. Everyone shut their mouths and slowed their footsteps as they followed into the private ward.
Fortunately, because of Yu Shuheng's connection, it was a private ward; otherwise, there wouldn't have been enough room for so many people.
After staying in the room for a while, leaving the cousin who knew how to take care of people, the other three were all driven out by the nurse.
Out of concern, Yu Shuheng specifically made a trip to the attending physician's office to understand the real situation. After coming out, she said to Li Heng:
"It should be fine. You didn't sleep all night last night, go eat something and get some sleep. I'll call you for dinner."
"Eh, alright."
The English teacher was too weak, and coupled with the fact that the anesthesia was still in effect, she fell asleep again. There was nothing he could help with here for the time being, so Li Heng didn't insist and decisively went outside to eat a bowl of beef noodles, then took a bath and caught up on sleep.
Li Heng slept very soundly.
He even had a dream.
The dream was absurd.
He actually dreamed of that woman with a mole on her lower abdomen again. He still couldn't see her face clearly, but her aura was particularly charming, entangling him until he was dying of desire.
Li Heng was startled awake! He stared blankly at the ceiling, unable to recover for a long time.
It was the third time already. Damn it, who the hell are you?
Song Yu, Xiao Han, and Zijin didn't have moles on their lower abdomens, and the three women weren't that clingy.
Uh, right, after the deed in the dream, that woman demanded that he marry her...
It was the demand that he abandon the three women to marry her that caused him to wake up suddenly.
Damn it! Being suspicious for an illusory character that didn't exist, Li Heng, having recovered, slapped his forehead and then checked the time.
5:19.
Having slept for over 5 hours, he put on his electronic watch and scrambled up, first throwing away his underwear!
It had to be thrown away. It was raining outside, and it wouldn't dry in this weather. Mainly, it was too dirty; it was one thing to have a lot of milk, but the key was that there was also crystal.
Anyway, he had plenty of underwear with him, so he didn't feel bad about one pair that was almost worn through.
Taking a refreshing shower and changing clothes, Li Heng appeared in the ward again.
The English teacher had woken up. Yu Shuheng and the other two women were accompanying her.
Li Heng walked forward to observe her and said happily: "Teacher, your complexion is much better than at noon. How are you feeling now?"
"Quite good. I didn't expect to still be alive to see you all." With her gaze lingering on his face, the English teacher had a feeling of surviving a disaster.
"It's true! That tumor was so big, I was scared to death when I saw it. Runwen, you must pay attention to maintaining your health in the future." The music teacher nearby gestured.
Li Heng and Yu Shuheng didn't dare to look closely at that thing, but even a rough glance told them it was quite substantial.
After chatting for a while, the cousin and the music teacher went outside to eat. Someone needed to accompany her in the ward, so the four discussed rotating for dinner.
Once the two women left, the English teacher said to him inexplicably: "Come closer, let me see."
Yu Shuheng took the initiative to step back, giving up the position at the head of the bed to him, and secretly observed the two from behind.
Ten seconds later, the English teacher said: "Turn around."
Li Heng froze, turned around, and happened to make eye contact with Yu Shuheng.
Another 10 seconds passed. The English teacher, realizing something, closed her eyes uncomfortably and said to him: "I've discussed it with Yu Laoshi. We'll buy you a plane ticket for Sunday so you can go back to class early."
"Ah?"
Li Heng said "ah," and then there was no follow-up.
At one moment, his intuition told him that it wasn't suitable to stay here for too long.
"Don't 'ah' me! You two go outside and chat for a while, I want to be quiet by myself." The English teacher drove them away inexplicably.
Seeing this, Yu Shuheng didn't hesitate and went outside first.
Li Heng followed her to the corridor.
Yu Shuheng scanned him up and down and asked: "She insists on you leaving early. How about I buy you a plane ticket for the morning after tomorrow?"
After looking at each other for a while, Li Heng said alright.
Then he asked: "Teacher, when are you returning to Shanghai?"
Yu Shuheng had a clear plan: "Next Sunday. If the situation changes, I might stay for a while longer."
As she spoke, she said regretfully: "I originally wanted to take her to Shanghai to recuperate, but she refused no matter what. Why don't you try to persuade her?"
Li Heng thought for a while and shook his head: "Teacher, I can't persuade her."
Everyone was a smart person; some things shouldn't be said too clearly.
Yu Shuheng's deep eyes seemed to see through his thoughts: "That's true."
At this point, the two were silent.
After a long while, she remembered to return the manuscript of "Cultural Bitter Travel" to him: "It's written very well. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I really wouldn't have imagined that someone so young could have such profound literary attainments."
Li Heng smiled, took the manuscript, and put it back in his bag.
The English teacher was truly asleep. After the cousin and the music teacher returned, Li Heng took Yu Shuheng outside to eat a few Xiangnan specialty dishes.
Such as cured meat, pork blood balls, three-combination soup, etc.
Besides these big dishes, Yu Shuheng also had a soft spot for jarred vegetables, especially sour chili and sour asparagus, eating several in a row.
Li Heng was surprised: "Teacher, aren't you from Shanghai? How can you eat so much chili?"
Yu Shuheng recalled: "I couldn't eat chili before; I practiced it in university with Runwen. She often brought jarred vegetables to school and later even made them herself in the dormitory."
So that was it. However, the English teacher's cooking skills weren't great; he hadn't expected her to know how to make jarred vegetables. It was truly unexpected.
Yu Laoshi's aura was too strong, and her scholarly atmosphere was rich. Her eyes were full of wisdom like an abyss. Although she was very intellectual and beautiful, Li Heng, who had lived two lifetimes, was feeling awkward for the first time when facing a woman. Subconsciously, he always felt like a lamb stripped of its clothes waiting to be slaughtered, seen through, with no secrets to speak of.
For this reason, after the two exchanged a few simple words, they basically didn't speak again, each eating their own food.
And the two had a tacit understanding; neither finished any dish, only picking from their own side. Well, or perhaps Yu Laoshi had seen through his thoughts and was deliberately cooperating with him.
