Chapter 113: How Old Are You?

~7 min read 1,364 words

When they returned to that country cottage, Miranda was shocked; after the initial panic, she quickly calmed down, asked Yang Yi to help Thomas into the bedroom, and called the private doctor.

Yang Yi briefly described what had happened to her.

Miranda gave her clean clothes and urged her to wash and change, while she went to take care of Thomas herself.

Back in the familiar bedroom, Yang Yi gave a bitter smile; she had returned again. However, she did not intend to stay long; once she confirmed Thomas was fine, she would take the initiative to take her leave.

She took a bath, tidied herself up, and hesitantly went upstairs.

Inside the room, Thomas lay on the bed; he had apparently just taken a bath, and his hair was still damp. His face was pale, his right hand was tightly bandaged with gauze, and an IV needle was inserted into the back of his left hand. The doctor was packing up his things.

Seeing her arrive, all three turned to look at her, and her steps hesitated involuntarily.

The doctor was a middle-aged man with a beard; he looked at Yang Yi curiously and nodded reservedly: "My lady, is your wound alright?"

"It's much better, thank you, doctor." Yang Yi had almost forgotten her own wound; perhaps while she was unconscious, Thomas and Miranda had summoned the doctor for her.

The doctor knew she was an Awakened, but under Thomas's instructions, he did not make a fuss. Besides, news of Awakened people was frequently heard in the news; he had also seen other Awakened people before, so he was not particularly surprised and withdrew his scrutinizing gaze.

"Thomas, your right hand was bitten by a wolf; you cannot move it for at least a month. Take this time to rest well. Remember to take your medicine on time; I will come again tomorrow." The doctor politely bid farewell to the two ladies present and left, with Miranda seeing him out.

Only two people remained in the bedroom.

Yang Yi glanced around the room; the windows were bright and the furniture clean. The style did not match her impression of Thomas himself; Yang Yi had thought his bedroom would be a steady, low-key black or gray, but light-colored plaid curtains of a typical British country style hung by the window, and the furniture colors were also quite bright. The bedding was light yellow plaid; Thomas lay there, and the aura around him seemed softer.

This must have been arranged by Miranda, Yang Yi thought.

"Mr. Thomas, seeing that you are fine puts my mind at ease." Yang Yi came to his bedside and looked at him sincerely, "I am truly very grateful that you went into the forest personally to find me."

Thomas lay flat on his back, able only to look up at her. For the first time, he examined this girl closely; she wore Miranda's floral shirt and a black knee-length skirt. The clothes were too large, hanging loosely on her body as if a child had stolen an adult's clothes. But Thomas knew that within this slender body lay immense, resilient strength.

Her face and figure resembled those of an underage girl, but her expression was sincere and calm; her pitch-black eyes seemed like two pools of traps, hiding infinite mystery and complexity. Her temperament was cool and detached, and a hint of melancholy seemed to lurk within her.

This calm, indifferent, yet melancholic and mysterious aura made him feel a sense of déjà vu, as if he had caught a glimpse of it somewhere by chance before.

For some reason, Thomas opened his mouth and asked, "How old are you?" The words had barely left his lips when he himself felt a bit surprised at why he would ask such a question.

Yang Yi was somewhat surprised but answered anyway: "Twenty-four years old."

Thomas nodded and said nothing.

Yang Yi had no choice but to speak up first: "Mr. Thomas, since you are fine, I will take my leave..."

"Where are you planning to go?" Thomas interrupted her, then sneered, "What, are you going back to the forest?"

Yang Yi nodded honestly: "Yes."

"What, are you unwilling to accept that you weren't eaten by a beast? Do you insist on delivering yourself personally into their mouths?" Thomas moved; his right hand was bandaged, so he used his IV-connected left hand to prop himself up on the bed, trying to sit up.

Yang Yi stepped forward and helped support him.

"Oh—I forgot, you are an Awakened, possessing boundless strength and powerful healing abilities, so you have no fear of beasts at all." Thomas mocked sarcastically.

He hadn't intended to be so harsh, but Yang Yi's decision inexplicably sparked a dark fire in his heart.

Yang Yi wasn't angry at all; ever since she killed the black panther, her heart had strangely calmed down significantly. Many negative thoughts that had previously clung to her seemed to have dissipated along with the death of the black panther.

Besides, Thomas had already left an impression on her of being cold on the outside but warm on the inside, stubborn in speech but soft at heart. For such a good person, no matter how poisonous his words, she could not bring herself to feel angry.

"Thank you for your praise." She acted as if she hadn't heard the sarcasm in his words, "My abilities still need training."

Thomas was choked up; he frowned, staring at the patterns on the quilt without speaking and without looking at her.

"Then, goodbye, Mr. Thomas. Wishing you good health." Yang Yi thanked him sincerely once more and turned to leave.

"My injury hasn't healed yet, Miranda's workload will be heavier; why don't you stay and help her?" Thomas suddenly spoke up.

Miranda walked in at that moment and said gently, "Yes, Mr. Thomas's condition is serious now; his right hand cannot move for a month. I am also getting old, and I cannot do many tasks. Can you stay and help me?"

She quietly winked at Thomas, and Thomas turned away with a stern face.

Yang Yi knew the reason they said this was merely out of kindness to take her in; perhaps after the night in the forest, they felt she was not a bad person.

She hesitated a bit; after last night, she felt there was still much within herself to be developed. After losing her telekinesis, her physical abilities had given her a vague new goal.

"Frisa, my dear, Mr. Thomas suffered such a serious injury for your sake; at least wait until he recovers before leaving. Okay?" Miranda playfully spread her hands toward her.

Yang Yi could only nod.

In the following days, Yang Yi helped Miranda with housework and tended the garden. Miranda had also opened up a small vegetable patch in the backyard, planting tomatoes, snow peas, cucumbers, oil wheat vegetables, lettuce, strawberries, and more. Yang Yi voluntarily took on tasks such as fertilizing, catching pests, and organizing the vegetable garden.

The country life in Britain was beautiful and tranquil; she felt she had never been so peaceful.

If not for the fragments within her body frequently appearing in her dreams, this could be considered the most pleasant time of her life.

That day, after dinner, she helped Miranda clean the kitchen, returned to the bedroom, and read for a while from "History of Western Art" borrowed from Thomas. She found it very difficult; there were many words she did not recognize, so she could only look them up while reading, and before she knew it, she had slumped onto the bed and fallen asleep.

She had a dream.

In the dream, she was watering flowers in the garden; the flowers bloomed exceptionally lushly. Various geraniums, lavender, and tulips covered the ground, with a large patch of roses on the ground and roses climbing all over the walls; the entire garden was filled with the sweet fragrance of flowers.

Just then, Chris appeared as if walking out of thin air, his face bearing obvious dissatisfaction and sadness: "You would rather stay here than contact me proactively? Do you know how worried I was?"
