Chapter 131: Alone, Fighting Across Ten Thousand Miles

~7 min read 1,339 words

Ten days after the Void-Eater Beasts ravaged, three days after the United Nations issued an SS-level alert, during the global pre-apocalypse drill, that familiar figure once again appeared in the sky — and far more powerful than before.

Rossia, Volga City. A family of three quietly huddled at the base of a wall of a seven-story residential building, watching the Void-Eater Beast drift toward the downtown district, secretly relieved to have escaped disaster.

"Mama… Papa… is the monster gone?" The chubby little girl carefully lifted her head from her father's shoulder and asked softly.

Only four years old, she had grown accustomed since the arrival of the alien creatures to being scooped up by her parents and fleeing in panic every now and then.

"Yes, the monster is gone… Maria, we're safe…" Her mother smoothed her tangled hair, wiped the dust from her little face, and spoke, still shaken.

But they failed to notice that the seven-story building behind them, having just been "fed upon" by the Void-Eater Beast, was already riddled with holes and on the verge of collapse.

Just as the father was comforting mother and daughter, the building overhead slowly tilted toward them; by the time they noticed, the falling bricks and stones were already crashing down.

"No…" The young father instinctively pulled mother and daughter beneath him, bracing to be buried by the rubble — yet the pain never came.

They opened their eyes gently, and the sight before them would stay with them for the rest of their lives.

All the falling bricks and stones floated in the air as if defying Earth's gravity, hovering only a few centimeters from their bodies; then these fragments and the half-tilted building were set down gently on the ground not far from them, as if weightless.

In the overcast sky, a slender figure suddenly flew past — she didn't even stop, only acting in passing as she went by.

"Mama, Papa… how magical. Did God do it?" The innocent little girl still didn't know she had just brushed past death.

"There is no God in this world… only a god of the human realm…" Her mother recalled the upheaval since the alien creatures' arrival, and spoke through tears and grievance.

"She saved us. Her name is Yang Yi." The father patted his wife's shoulder.

"Yang Yi—" The little girl repeated the strange-sounding syllables in Slavic, gazing at the sky. The figure had long since vanished, as if everything that had just happened were an illusion.

Saudi Arabia, Jeddah City, Dulles International Airport.

Jeddah lies about seventy kilometers east of the Holy City and serves as the transit hub for Blue Sect faithful worldwide making pilgrimage to the Holy City, with dense crowds. But precisely because of those crowds, it suffered the Void-Eater Beast's attack.

A Void-Eater Beast circled lazily above the airport, its long gray-white tendrils hanging down like a fine drizzle; these threads pierced the airport's sturdy roof and, as if with eyes of their own, automatically hunted the humans below.

Foreign tourists scattered in flight, while some Blue Sect faithful — wearing small white caps or shrouded in black robes — paid no heed to the approaching gray-white tendrils, dropping to their knees instead, raising their hands, and praying to their Prophet.

But the Prophet gave them no answer; instead, the plea for aid sent to Xia Nation received a response.

The figure that had vanished for nearly a month suddenly appeared overhead. Seen from afar, she pressed her hands together, and the Void-Eater Beast in the air was slapped flat into a thin sheet — from three dimensions into two.

Then the figure departed again, having stayed less than half a minute.

Foreign tourists were variously thrilled, ecstatic, shouting Yang Yi's name and titles — but the Blue Sect faithful instead knelt one after another, performing the great pilgrimage rite toward the Holy City: "Thanks be to the merciful Lord for this miracle…"

Some atheist foreign tourists couldn't help but have question marks pop up over their heads…

Heizhou, Nesburg, Tunisia…

Yue Nation, Haiphong City…

Ao Nation, Adelaide City, Newcastle City…

Aka Nation, Atlant City…

Jia Nation, Fax…

In just over two hours, Yang Yi flew across the entire globe, slaying sixty-one Void-Eater Beasts in total — each killed in a single strike, not a single second wasted.

And at this point, from when she had appeared on the outskirts of Rossi City shortly after eight in the morning, it was now only half past eleven.

Thomas sat in the car, staring unblinkingly at various international news live channels — Yang Yi's figure appeared on Rossia's news broadcast one moment, on Saudi Arabia's the next, and in the blink of an eye on Heizhou…

Alone, she fought across ten thousand miles.

In a single thought, all things lived and perished.

Can such power still be called human?

If he did not know that god of the human realm, he might still be able to calmly analyze what the appearance of this "god" meant for humanity, for the existing world order, and for the development of human civilization as a whole…

He might even, with a cutting tongue, think that while her appearance seemed beneficial to humanity, it might in reality hinder humanity's overall progress — that she made people habitually long for a hero, a "god," whenever danger came, and thus forget their own efforts.

He might also, with a cutting tongue, think that Yang Yi's appearance would lead people to belittle the wisdom and strength of the masses and the collective — that when the power of all human civilization could not match a hero's casual wave of the hand, every individual's effort and every group's struggle would become a joke.

Her appearance would push the entire civilization toward a deformed, unhealthy direction; future histories would inevitably become the personal biographies of heroes, people would grow accustomed to obeying authority, lose individual consciousness, and even develop a deeply rooted servility…

But…

But she is Yang Yi…

She is nothing more than an ordinary girl filled with torment, anxiety, and anguish inside — she even suffers because of the immense power she carries. That despairing face of hers appeared before him once again; she said, "You know? I have no way. I have absolutely no way…" Those hollow eyes of hers gazed at him, as if looking through him at many others.

At that time, was she in agony because she had lost her power and could no longer help those who suffered? Was it unbearable that the fate of all humanity rested on her shoulders?

Her suffering — perhaps no one through the ages could truly comprehend it. Everyone envied and coveted her vast, mighty power; everyone longed to be her, to surpass her.

People might even think she was the happiest person in the world, because she could easily obtain anything she desired.

Thomas gazed at that tiny figure in the sky — at this moment, what was she thinking?

Traffic police and doctors arrived late at last; the dead were carried away, the injured sent to the hospital, and the highway reopened to traffic.

The fleeing driver climbed back into the driver's seat and looked at Thomas with a certain reverence, because he had personally seen Thomas wrap the god of the human realm in a blanket and place her in the car, where she had leaned against his chest the whole way — at the time, he had assumed she was some kind of lover of Thomas's.

"Mr., shall we continue on?" he asked cautiously.

Thomas was silent for a moment, then answered, "No. Back to Tims Village."

"Right, Frisa… no, Yang Yi doesn't know where Essex Manor is either. If we go back to the manor, she won't be able to find us…" Miranda said.

It's not that I'm afraid she can't find us… I've just gotten used to living in Tims Village, that's all…

Thomas instinctively wanted to retort, but deep down he knew he was lying.
