Chapter 137: Reporters Swarm

~7 min read 1,374 words

"Actually, from another perspective, this is also a good thing. We are in the vast ocean, not in a glass tank. Although we are merely the most ordinary krill in the ocean, although there are even more sharks, giant insignia, whales, and all kinds of unimaginable terrifying predators around us, and although we currently face a life-or-death crisis, we are not being raised in a glass tank or a laboratory petri dish... Do you understand?... As long as we survive this crisis—though more crises may come—we have already welcomed more possibilities..."

Wade paced quickly inside the cage. He seemed to be muttering to himself, and finally, he suddenly slapped both hands against the glass cage wall, looking out at Yang Yi with a mad expression.

These words had no beginning or end, even sounding like the ramblings of a madman, but Yang Yi understood.

Before the arrival of dark matter, scientists had been thinking about and exploring one question: Does the universe really have aliens? In such a vast universe, why have no alien civilizations been discovered to date?

According to the formula: Number of civilizations in the universe = Number of planets × Probability of civilization emergence ≥ 1 (the existence of humanity itself). The number of stars in the universe is at least one hundred billion multiplied by one hundred billion. Statistically, it is impossible for Earth to be the only civilization in the universe.

Since alien civilizations definitely exist, why have humans not discovered them to date?

Scientists have imagined various possibilities:

Perhaps Earth's civilization is a petri dish in an alien laboratory, which is why Earth's civilization has remained isolated and no alien civilization has been discovered to date.

Perhaps Earth's civilization is too backward; just as humans protect wild animals and indigenous cultures, aliens do not interfere with our development.

There is also another hypothesis: Earth's civilization does not actually exist. All our consciousness is like a brain in a vat; this world itself is fake, and our senses collectively construct this world. But who created this world of consciousness?

But no matter which of these hypotheses is true, it means that human civilization belongs to the lowest level of civilization. Those advanced civilizations could destroy Earth's civilization at any time with just a thought.

Yang Yi also nodded: "Now, at least we know there is a whale in the sea. Our only goal is to avoid being swallowed by this whale... Having difficulties is better than not knowing where the difficulties lie..."

Wade smiled. "It's so good. If we had met earlier, perhaps we would have become friends..." After speaking, he laughed at himself, knowing that even if they had met earlier, they would most likely have been strangers.

"You may leave. I want to savor the night before death, this time of loneliness and silence. Tomorrow, I will welcome eternal void, and even I myself will turn into void..." Wade said. He suddenly lay down on the single bed in the cage and never looked at Yang Yi again.

Yang Yi silently gave him one last look, then turned and left.

"Do not forget, even until the very last moment, I will not give up on my goal."

Wade's slow voice came from behind, sounding like a warning.

Yang Yi's figure paused for a moment, then she left.

—

At 8:50 the next morning, Yang Yi arrived at the execution chamber.

The execution chamber was simply arranged: a huge room divided by transparent isolation walls. Inside was the injection execution room; outside were many seats arranged for family members, media, jurors, and others to watch.

When Yang Yi entered, everyone in the audience turned to look at her.

Especially several internationally famous media reporters immediately swarmed over:

"Ms. Yang, I am a reporter from United Nations Daily. What is your opinion on Wade's verdict?... "

"Ms. Yang, we are reporters from United Press International. We heard that you personally arrested Wade. What do you think about Wade's crimes against humanity...?"

"... We are Reuters reporters. We heard that yesterday Wade requested to see you one last time. What did he say to you? Since you went to see him one last time, do you hold any sympathy for him...?"

"... We are Faxinshe reporters. Regarding the Divine Punishment Organization's insistence that only New Humans can save human civilization, what is your opinion as the strongest among the New Humans? Do you agree with Wade's viewpoint...?"

"... We are AP reporters. What is the meaning behind the order in which you saved various countries during the Void-Devouring Beast crisis? Why was the order based on the level of closeness with Xia Country? Does this represent some personal political tendency of yours...?"

These reporters swarmed over like sharks smelling blood, immediately blocking Yang Yi's path completely.

For these past few days, Yang Yi had been staying in a five-star hotel arranged by the United Nations, with security so tight it surpassed that of a national head of state.

The next day, Xia Country sent a diplomat to the United Nations, accompanied by a team of special-grade security personnel who tightly guarded Yang Yi's residence. These reporters had not had the slightest opportunity to see Yang Yi.

However, the execution chamber does not prohibit the media, so these media outlets were seeing Yang Yi in person for the first time in these days, which explains their frenzy.

Some reporters had decided before Yang Yi arrived that even if they angered her, they would dig out some explosive news—because they were certain Yang Yi would not dare to physically attack the media in front of everyone, during a global live broadcast.

The sharp questions from the media made everyone present involuntarily look at Yang Yi's expression.

A pile of microphones was almost shoved into Yang Yi's face. She was completely surrounded; unless she used her superpower to push these people away, she could not move another step.

Yang Yi, expressionless, glanced around.

All the reporters who were asking questions were silenced by this gaze. For a moment, the surroundings gradually became utterly silent.

She did not use telekinesis, yet this invisible intimidation was even more unbearable than if she had used telekinesis. People actually wished she would use telekinesis—that would certainly become big news.

People in the audience seats had already begun to fidget, and the surrounding reporters involuntarily became somewhat panicked.

Yang Yi did not stay long. She took one small step forward, and with that step, a path leading to the audience seats opened up from among the surrounding reporters.

Yang Yi calmly walked to the very center of the front row of the audience seats and sat down.

The United Nations special police present reacted quickly and hurried forward to maintain order; only then did the reporters, as if suddenly awakened, scatter.

The room fell into a rare silence.

In this silence, everyone involuntarily looked at the slender figure sitting in the front row, with various kinds of gazes, all different.

She naturally leaned back in the chair, propping her head with her right hand, her body slanted, her gaze fixed on the execution bed inside the transparent isolation wall, looking as if she were lost in thought.

A moment later, it was exactly 9 o'clock.

The small door of the injection execution room opened. First entered two fully armed special police officers carrying guns; subsequently, two special police officers escorted Wade, dressed in prison garb, inside.

Wade wore loose white prison clothes. His hands were tightly locked by ability-suppressing handcuffs, and he also wore an ability-suppressing collar around his neck. His hair was not groomed neatly with hair gel as usual; the brownish-gray hair naturally fell around his forehead. Combined with his downturned eye corners, he instead appeared harmless and gentle.

However, no one believed he was truly harmless. The fully armed special police officers all around, along with the forensic experts and execution personnel who were on high alert, were clear proof.

As soon as he entered the room, his gaze immediately locked onto Yang Yi, who was sitting in the center of the front row of the audience seats. The moment he saw this enemy who had captured him, his brown-black eyes curved slightly, and he actually smiled.
