Chapter 142: Full-Scale Invasion
When a red scar appeared in the sky, Chris was immediately transferred by security to the underground air-raid shelter beneath the hospital.
Mayo Hospital is the most first-class hospital in Arkah Country and the whole world; because its patients are either extremely wealthy or highly noble, the hospital constructed very sturdy safety facilities underground.
He was almost forced onto a wheelchair by several burly guards, and despite his resistance, they forcibly carried him down to the underground air-raid shelter.
"Let go of me! My mother is still outside; she just went out shopping!" He exerted nearly all his strength to break free from the guards' restraints, but they stood immovable, causing him to subconsciously suspect whether he was truly suffering from severe radiation, to the point that he couldn't even struggle free slightly.
"Mr. Chris, rest assured, your mother has already returned; we will send her to you immediately," a black guard said.
Shortly after, several guards left directly.
Chris hurriedly looked around, wanting to find a phone to call his mother Mary, only to realize he had left his mobile phone in the ward; he rushed to get up and chase after them, but was stopped at the air-raid shelter entrance by the same guards from before.
Just as they were arguing, his mother was finally brought down by another guard, and only then did Chris feel relieved.
While comforting his still-shaken mother, he led her back toward the room they had just left.
As they walked, he gradually noticed something was wrong.
A sense of dissonance had been lingering in his heart; just now, due to worry over his mother and the intense argument, he hadn't had time to think, but now that he had calmed down, he finally understood the source of this dissonance—this place was too quiet.
The air-raid shelter was large and divided into different rooms; each room was fully equipped with various medical facilities, and except for lacking windows, it was almost identical to the high-class wards above.
And now, these rooms were almost all empty, with only him and his mother present.
Moreover, he was the first person sent here, yet his ward was not the closest to this location.
Mayo Hospital's patients are either extremely wealthy or highly noble; there are many high-ranking officials in the government, tycoons controlling the economic lifelines, and royal family members from various countries conducting state affairs with Arkah Country; if ranked by importance of status, these figures should have been protected first, not him, a mere movie star.
Furthermore, these guards were too robust; even though he had suffered radiation and was physically weak, his years of fitness training should not have left him so powerless before them.
Chris's heart sank deeper and deeper.
He kept a poker face, holding his mother with one arm to comfort her while closely watching the activity at the air-raid shelter entrance.
In a short while, other patients were brought in successively, but those escorting them were orderlies and nurses; even if there were guards, none were any of the faces he had seen earlier.
Chris took his mother to the ward he had just occupied, used the excuse of going to ask about the situation outside, and arrived at the air-raid shelter entrance.
Guarding outside the door were exactly the same guards from before.
"There is a rule here: except for hospital staff, only entry is allowed, no exit," the black guard glanced at him and said coldly.
Chris said nothing and retreated.
He had an extremely ominous premonition in his heart, and this premonition grew stronger and stronger.
He began to recall his past whereabouts, began to recall those suspicious figures around him, and began to recall whether anything in his home had been rummaged through—especially the time Yang Yi had visited.
At that time, he had carefully cleaned up all her traces—but had he really cleaned them thoroughly? Had he left not a single trace? Now he dared not be certain.
Returning to the ward, his mother was watching a live news broadcast.
From the constantly shaking camera, it could be seen that the red scar in the sky was growing larger and larger; the alien creatures surging out of it were also becoming larger and larger, and more and more numerous; even though the sky was filled with cannon fire and the alien creatures' broken limbs and fragments flew everywhere, the defense was still perilously close to collapsing.
Suddenly, an emergency news bulletin interrupted; a nuclear missile was fired into the "wound" in the sky over Detroit City, followed by flames and a half-mushroom cloud splashing out from the hole; the shockwave blasted the alien creatures that had evaded the fire defense net below into dust, but the high-rise buildings below could not be spared, instantly exploding into ruins.
"Damn it! She is still in that world! How could you recklessly fire a nuclear missile into it!" Chris immediately jumped up and rushed out of the air-raid shelter. Mary hurriedly followed.
At the entrance, Chris was stopped.
"Non-hospital staff, only entry is allowed, no exit," the black guard, who seemed to be the leader of the group, saw Chris and reiterated this once again.
"I know who you are! You henchmen!" Chris flew into a rage, "How dare you! She is still in that world, searching for a spatial device there, and you actually fired a nuclear missile into it!"
The black guard's expression remained unmoved. "We are hospital security; we do not know what you are talking about."
"Then let me out!" Chris, disregarding everything, tried to rush past, but was easily stopped by the black guard.
Chris gritted his teeth, lowered his head, and with all his might struck the black guard's liver area with a punch. This was a killing move in martial arts; for the one struck, at best it causes difficulty breathing and weak legs, collapsing instantly; at worst, the liver is shattered on the spot, requiring immediate hospital emergency treatment. He had learned this from a world-class martial arts coach while filming an action movie.
Yet the black guard merely stepped back slightly and frowned.
Chris finally confirmed that these people were Awakened Ones; otherwise, no ordinary person, no matter how strong, could remain unharmed under such a killing move.
"Alien creatures are ravaging outside; for the safety of the patients, non-hospital staff, only entry is allowed, no exit," the black guard repeated this sentence, his attitude much colder and harder.
Chris was nearly driven mad; his eyes were bloodshot. "You will kill her! She went to that world to save all humanity, and you..."
Mary looked at her son with worry; she had never seen her son in such a state before.
"If you are referring to that female superhero, do not worry! The Wembury Giant Hole incident proved she can withstand a nuclear missile; and the defense failure over Detroit City means it can no longer withstand the alien creatures' attacks," the black guard said coldly, then as if suddenly remembering something, added: "All this is explained in the news."
"Nonsense! When the nuclear missile exploded at the Wembury Giant Hole, she had already gone to the Otherworld; this cannot prove she can protect herself under a nuclear explosion!" Chris shouted.
"If she cannot withstand even a nuclear missile, then entering the Otherworld is also death," the black guard said with a sarcastic tone:
"Do you know? This nuclear missile had a yield of 50,000 tons and barely held off the monster attacks over Detroit City; but what about that world? The density and power of the monsters there are far more dangerous than this nuclear missile; from the moment she entered until now, a full two hours have passed! Last time she went to the Otherworld to save Britain, it took her less than 40 minutes."
"Perhaps," the black guard's expression seemed sarcastic, seemed regretful, and also seemed to hold some sorrow for a kindred spirit, "she is already dead..."
Just as the two were arguing, several emergency news bulletins abruptly interrupted on the large screen in the air-raid shelter:
"According to the latest report, a few minutes after our country fired a nuclear missile, other nuclear-armed nations, Judah Country, Britain, France, India... successively fired nuclear missiles into the Otherworld channel.
"Currently, the global human defense line has nearly collapsed; human governments worldwide are doing their utmost to resist; we must be ready for ground combat at any time—if alien creatures fully enter Earth, it will cause unprecedented harm to ordinary civilians..."
