Chapter 210: The Storm Approaches

~7 min read 1,261 words

The United Nations requested Yang Yi's assistance; anomalous creatures had appeared in Diego City, suspected to be the same kind of monster from the Fog City incident — the Breeder race.

The report Yang Yi had written earlier was submitted as-is; the Breeder race had been entered into the anomalous creature catalog and networked globally.

So when Jefferson Webber, chairman of the United Nations Awakener Alliance, requested Yang Yi to go handle it, she set off immediately.

This monster had been ravaging Diego City for nearly a month, causing thirty thousand deaths — already an A-rank disaster — and yet no one had notified her.

Only when the matter broke through the online information blockade and could no longer be concealed did it finally reach Yang Yi.

"So why wasn't I notified until now?" Yang Yi flew above the clouds, Jefferson Webber's hesitant voice in her earpiece.

"In fact, Aka Nation never reported it to the United Nations. It was our Surveillance Department that detected this disaster had reached A-rank, which is why we requested your assistance."

"Over thirty thousand dead, for a whole month? Aka Nation never reported it?" Yang Yi's tone was flat, but the implication already made Jefferson Webber's heart pound with dread.

She hung up the phone, and a sense of foreboding slowly rose within her.

The Breeder race — an intelligent species from another world. Ability: psychic attack, absorbing and fusing other creatures to make them part of itself. If the absorbed creature is an intelligent species, its intelligence rises accordingly, ultimately achieving the "Desire Mother God."

Information about the Breeder race slowly surfaced in her mind.

Most importantly, the Breeder that had once tried to fuse with her, when attempting to achieve the Desire Mother Tree, had been reverse-fused by her and became part of her.

Had this Breeder come through an interdimensional passage? Or…

She accelerated, a stream of air breaking through the clouds, leaving a straight trail across the sky.

In a short while, Diego City came into view.

Diego City sits on the border between Ink Nation and Aka Nation, facing the Great Pacific Ocean to the west. It is a bustling port city with a permanent population of 1.34 million.

But at this moment, the once-bustling streets were nearly deserted.

Yang Yi descended through the clouds, her feet landing on the street. Abandoned cars were scattered in pieces everywhere; trash had gone uncollected for ages, and plastic bags of every kind fluttered through the air on the distant sea breeze.

Her telekinesis expanded directly, covering the entire city. Countless human figures appeared in her consciousness like red dots on a thermal imaging screen — those were their life-source signatures within her telekinetic web.

Most people were huddled in their homes; even more were hiding in basements or air-raid shelters.

But aside from a few C-to-B-rank anomalous creatures, she did not find that Breeder.

She casually crushed those few anomalous creatures hiding in corners, then extended her telekinesis deep underground to search — still nothing.

Finally, her gaze fell upon the sea.

She plunged her telekinesis directly into the ocean, spreading it ever farther and deeper.

At last, a creature with an overwhelmingly powerful life-source appeared on her telekinetic web. If an ordinary person's life-source was as faint as a firefly, then this one blazed like a sun, shining so brightly it could not be ignored.

It was that Breeder — far more powerful than the one from Fog City back then.

As if sensing Yang Yi's probe, it instantly broke free of her surveillance and fled into the distance.

Yang Yi locked onto it immediately, plunged into the sea, and gave chase.

Two minutes later, Yang Yi was already hovering above this Breeder.

It was a hideously deformed monster — countless human arms, legs, torsos, and organs of every kind distributed across its body in bizarre arrangements.

Countless human eyes — black, brown, blue, green — blinked in unison, all looking at Yang Yi.

This was beyond mere deformity; it was psychic pollution — a single glance would make one's head spin and numb the mind.

It was clearly a horrifying sight, yet in the eyes covering its entire body, Yang Yi saw bewilderment and confusion.

The telekinesis Yang Yi was about to unleash hesitated for a moment.

She heard the thousands upon thousands of mouths on its body open and close together, countless voices of men, women, the elderly, and children speaking different words, like tens of thousands of people talking at once, like a noisy train station:

"Who are you?"

"You're Yang Yi? The god of this world they talk about?"

"Are you here to kill me?"

"Why do you feel so familiar to me?"

"Mama!"

"Mother God above!"

Yang Yi's throat trembled slightly, and she asked softly, "What did you call me?"

"Mama!" a child's face called out sweetly, full of adoration.

"Mother God above! I feel the aura of the Mother God on you!" an old man's face shouted with wild joy.

"You're Yang Yi! I've seen you on TV — so you're our Mother God!"

"Mother God! Mother God!"

At last, all the voices converged into a single word, surging toward Yang Yi like floodwaters bursting a dam.

Her face was wooden, expressionless.

"Where did you come from?" she asked again, her voice steady and cold.

"A laboratory! A bunch of people in white coats bred me out of an experiment!"

"They put me in a big water tank…"

"They stuck needles in me too, pumped a lot of water into my body…"

"Mama, mama, are you taking me home?" a little girl's face called out sweetly, brimming with joy.

After a silence, Yang Yi smiled. "Yes, taking you home."

Ten minutes later, Yang Yi's figure slowly rose from the sea. She murmured to herself, "Not bad flavor."

As she spoke, she smiled involuntarily — a strange, indescribable smile.

Then, immediately aware of this, she returned to an expressionless face.

What should she do next? Her thoughts struggled out of a fog of chaos, like a forgetful person trying to remind herself, and she kept repeating under her breath: "Laboratory, laboratory, laboratory…"

"Oh, the laboratory — where did they get the Breeder DNA?"

"What experiment were they running? Were they trying to breed a Breeder?"

Thoughts churned over and over until a notion that had lurked deep in her heart for a long time, one she dared not admit, finally surfaced.

"Is it possible that the DNA of the Zhi Nie Clan comes from me? They tried to clone me, but cloned a monster instead?"

"Ah, now it's done. Once this news spreads, the whole world will know I'm a monster..." she pondered.

Her emotions seemed stripped away, leaving only a detached, calm reasoning.

Because this possibility had been rehearsed in her mind thousands upon thousands of times, even the most terrifying feelings had been worn numb through constant repetition.

What should be done now?

They will surely suspect me, surely fear me, surely attack me, surely hate me...

I can't possibly kill them all, can I?

Why not? They're going to die sooner or later anyway.

She was startled, as if suddenly waking from a trance, and all her emotions returned in an instant.

She patted her head, as if brushing away dust, trying to knock those chaotic thoughts out.

Looking around, the vast sea was rough with fierce winds and towering waves; the surf crashed repeatedly against her telekinetic barrier, leaving a few streaks of water.

The sky was overcast; a storm was coming.
