Chapter 90: Heroes and Ordinary People
"Fool! Just a few days ago you swore you had a human heart! Now it's shattered by two simple words—this is your so-called conviction. If you can't bear being a Dark God, go die now and give me your body! Oh heavens, to bypass humanity and become a god directly? This is simply... too wonderful..." It was so excited it nearly leaped into the air.
Yang Yi came to her senses; her numb, icy thoughts showed a slight crack.
"How do you plan to become this Dark God?" Yang Yi murmured. She didn't know why she asked; it seemed she wanted to pull herself out of this state.
"Whatever I please! Do whatever I want! I am already a god; nothing in the entire universe can restrict me. I am completely free!"
If it were controlling the body, it would probably be dancing with joy right now. It laughed wildly, "This is your pursuit too, your true inner desire, the true self you dare not admit, the true wish only I can fulfill! Hahahaha..."
Its interruption finally brought Yang Yi's thoughts back; like a frozen river in winter slowly thawing, though still cold, it began to flow with a rushing sound.
Hmm—if the Dark God is it, that actually makes sense.
She thought this.
This idea instantly gave her an inspiration—then what about the other one in the body? What is its identity? Why did it stop the Reproductive Breed from speaking the Dark God's name? It fears the Dark God's gaze falling upon this place! It fears the true Dark God discovering it!
Then I certainly am not the Dark God, and it must have some connection to the Dark God, which is why those alien races mistook it for the Dark God!
This might be the correct answer!
The thawing river flowed faster and faster, thoughts became smoother and smoother, and her stiff body regained warmth. She had never felt so fortunate; she felt her eyes grow hot, sore, and swollen, then she realized she was actually weeping from joy.
"It was that Reproductive Breed," Yang Yi said to Vede with a smile, a smile more relaxed than ever before, "It spoke the name of your Lord."
"Where is it?"
"I killed it."
Although puzzled by her up-and-down emotions, Vede was overjoyed upon hearing this, "I knew it! Our goals are the same!"
Yang Yi gave no definite answer, shaking her head lightly, "So many people have died; my goal is to kill you. You still think we are the same kind of people? How strange..."
Her tone was very light; that fleeting thought, though only a few seconds long, felt to her like decades of ups and downs in life, nearly exhausting all her strength. She was very tired and had no desire to speak.
"Why am I wasting time here with an executioner?" she seemed to ask herself, preparing to leave.
Vede smiled sadly, "An executioner? Yes, they now call me an executioner, a maniacal killer, a mad cultist..."
Suddenly, he grew agitated and shouted loudly, "What kind of executioner am I? What kind of criminal? If we talk about killing, Hitler killed six million people, Napoleon killed six and a half million, and Genghis Khan even killed two hundred million, yet they are all regarded as heroes and great men!
"Presidents of the Ark Nation across history, they sent millions of soldiers to the battlefield, they invaded other countries, all just to open markets for the military-industrial complexes behind them providing 'political aid', all just for some dark oil, all just to preach freedom and democracy that even they don't believe in! As long as they attach a beautiful slogan, they kill with a clear conscience. What are morality and conscience to them? Just a pretty piece of clothing, something they can change at any time; they never take it seriously! They stand high above, considering themselves masters of humanity, playing with human lives through politics; the masses are just worthless insects in their eyes.
"Why don't you look closely at their expressions on television? Do they have conscience in their eyes? Do they have morality? If you ask them about morality and conscience, they will even mock you! Simply because they hold power, hold the right to speak, they can kill with justification, kill with righteous indignation, and people will still admire them, praise them!
"Yang Yi, may I ask, what is it for? It is for the future of Earth! It is for the survival of humanity! If I succeed, I will be the hero of the new humanity! A great man! Future generations will praise my name day and night; they will forever promote my deeds in textbooks!"
Vede finally shed that gentle expression; his face flushed with excitement, and his gaze toward Yang Yi was brave, fearless, and fanatical, like a warrior sacrificing himself for an ideal, a saint willing to endure suffering for his faith.
Hearing Vede's impassioned speech, a fact suddenly became clear in Yang Yi's exhausted mind:
She was actually just an ordinary person.
Even though she possessed power far beyond normal humans, even though she gained power comparable to a god, her mind could never become such a "hero." These "heroes," to realize their ideals and goals, could view everything on their path forward as obstacles, viewing human lives as insects. They were fanatical believers in ideals, practitioners of doctrines, and nothing more than "human" themselves.
And she, with weak will and an average personality, without superpowers, would forever remain just one of those ordinary, mediocre masses. She respected every person with a conscience; she sympathized with those struggling to survive. Two years ago, seeing a child in the news whose skin was burned black in a fire, her heart ached, and she donated half of her just-received wages; she had seen a mother standing helplessly with red-rimmed eyes because she couldn't afford the toy her child wanted, and she herself had felt her eyes grow hot.
She sympathized with them, just as she sympathized with herself.
And until now, she still didn't feel she was any different from them; she had just been lucky enough to win the lottery, suddenly gaining a little special talent.
These thoughts, in the eyes of those big shots, might seem utterly ridiculous. She had absorbed the life sources of over four thousand people, even though she didn't kill them herself, yet she was tormented day and night by this. She was bound by morality; she was tortured by her own conscience.
Would Hitler have felt even a shred of regret for starting World War II and slaughtering the Jews?
Would Genghis Khan have been unable to eat for killing two hundred million people?
Would Vede be unable to sleep for killing over a hundred thousand innocent people?
Would the President of the Ark Nation have nightmares for sending millions of compatriots to die on the battlefield, for invading other countries, for leaving countless people homeless?
When they watch international news, seeing that Middle Eastern girl with both arms blown off by a bomb crying in the ruins while searching for her mother and father, would they feel even the slightest touch of emotion?
