Chapter 102: Jiang Lai Packs Up Her Things and Leaves

~7 min read 1,382 words

Shen Xun typed the two characters "okay", paused for a moment, deleted them and typed two new characters:

【No need.】

【No longer needed after this.】

Jiang Lai has recently been wronged; if Shen Xun continues to monitor her like this, Jiang Lai would probably be upset if she found out.

Shen Xun put down the phone.

Shen Xun himself has not yet realized that his attitude toward Jiang Lai has already changed imperceptibly.

At first, he feared Jiang Lai would be uncontrollable, and disregarding her objections, forced her to resign, signing her up for a parenting class to prepare her for motherhood.

Now, he has begun to care about Jiang Lai's feelings.

When a person puts aside his own interests and prioritizes another's feelings, it shows he has fallen in love.

He likes her without realizing it.

…

Jiang Lai entered the house by pushing the door open with the code; the home greeted her with a stark chill, and a thin layer of dust already covered the shoe cabinet.

Both of them have been away for far too long.

Jiang Lai looked around, gazing at the house she had lived in for four years, where every corner once held her busy figure.

Shen Xun's two most frequented spots are the living‑room sofa; he sometimes works there as well and never goes to the Shufang.

The other is the balcony.

Whenever Shen Xun answers a call, he goes to the balcony and pulls the glass door shut.

She either sees Shen Xun's back or his profile.

Jiang Lai stood dazed for a while.

Coming to her senses, Ke Zhongying had already opened the shoe cabinet, pointing at the shoes inside and asking, "Are you taking all your shoes?"

"I'll collect them later," Jiang Lai told her to sit on the sofa, then she boiled water, fetched a bottle of rose tea from the cabinet, and brewed it for her.

"You drink first; I'll go to the bedroom to gather my clothes." Jiang Lai entered the bedroom; the sheets and duvet cover had already been changed, though not neatly arranged.

She still shook the blanket, spread it on the bed, folded a small portion, and propped the pillow upright.

She pulled back the curtains, opened the window, and let air circulate in the sealed room.

Then she opened the wardrobe.

The suits, shirts, and ties in the wardrobe were somewhat tangled; Jiang Lai sorted each of them, her eyes constantly lowered, long lashes shielding every emotion in her gaze.

This was her last time arranging Shen Xun's clothes.

The sound of Ke Zhongying making a phone call suddenly reached her ears, as if she had urgent business to leave.

Just as Jiang Lai turned her head, Ke Zhongying was already at the doorway, peeking out and saying, "Sister Jiang Lai, the old man is urgently calling me to the lab; I might have to leave first, but it's fine—I've already found someone to help you move."

"You go ahead; no need to find anyone to help."

"It's okay, he's especially free. I'm leaving now, Sister Jiang Lai; when I return I'll take you to my little tavern to celebrate!"

Jiang Lai smiled faintly as she watched Ke Zhongying leave.

Earlier, when she stayed at the teacher's wife's place, she had brought some clothes over; now there's little left in the wardrobe, so she fetched a bag for a quilt, folded the clothes one by one, and put them inside.

In total there was only one bag.

The shoes and other small items went into another bag.

The little gadgets Shen Xun occasionally bought for her she does not intend to take.

Things like toothbrushes, bath sponges, and towels, Jiang Lai tossed all into the trash can.

The rest was nothing much.

Three‑fifths of the items in this home belong to Shen Xun, one‑fifth are shared, and the one‑fifth she takes as hers is indistinguishable at a glance.

Jiang Lai carried the two bags into the hallway, then brought them back in, put on a mask and gloves, grabbed a rag, held a basin of water, and wiped every dusty spot in the house.

A place lived in for four years inevitably holds feelings.

Moreover, she had longed all her life for a home of her own; when she first moved into this house, she cleaned it thoroughly.

People should have a beginning and an end.

After more than an hour, fine beads of sweat dotted Jiang Lai's forehead; she raised her arm to wipe them, and the doorbell rang.

The door was not closed.

"Who's there?" she looked up, a moment of tension flashing across her face.

Could it be that Shen Xun has returned?

"It's me." Ke Zhongyu stepped in from the doorway, staring at the sweating Jiang Lai crouched before the genuine‑leather sofa, his sword‑shaped eyebrows knit.

He glanced around again.

Seeing the cramped three‑room, two‑hall apartment, his brow furrowed even tighter.

Shen Xun earns ten million a year, yet makes Jiang Lai endure hardship living with him in such a small place.

He gives money to his third sister but not to his wife, right?

The more infuriating part is.

They're divorced, yet Jiang Lai is still here laboriously cleaning for someone.

The clothes are dirty.

There's dust on the face as well.

Ke Zhongyu strode over at a rapid pace.

"Chief Ke." Jiang Lai wasn't that surprised by Ke Zhongyu's appearance; she knew it must have been Ke Zhongying who called him.

The siblings bicker constantly, and whenever something arises they can summon someone instantly.

"What Ke… Ke?" Ke Zhongyu's sharp features and a faint anger in his eyes as he snatched the rag from Jiang Lai's hand and tossed it into the murky water basin.

Dirty water lightly splashed out a portion, scattering onto both of their feet.

"You really like being a nanny for people, don't you?"

Jiang Lai opened her mouth to explain.

Ke Zhongyu let out another low curse: "What a problem."

"Come with me." He grabbed Jiang Lai's wrist.

Jiang Lai didn't move her feet; her eyes held only work: "Just a little more, wipe the sofa and shoe cabinet, sweep the floor and mop once more, then it'll be done…"

"Stop wasting words." Ke Zhongyu seemed to have lost patience, bent over and hoisted the filthy Jiang Lai onto his shoulder, then walked out without another word.

As her body suddenly lifted, Jiang Lai didn't cry out, only gripping his shoulder in terror, turning her head she said: "Boss Ke!"

"Shut up!" Ke Zhongyu didn't waste words with her; as he carried her out, the driver had already been waiting outside for a while.

"Take these two bags up." Ke Zhongyu looked at the bags on the ground and instructed the driver, "Be careful."

"Okay, Boss Ke."

The driver immediately picked up the things and followed.

"Boss Ke, please put me down." Jiang Lai bounced on Ke Zhongyu's shoulder, which he did on purpose.

Being carried on a man's shoulder for the first time, Jiang Lai felt both shy and angry, but her anger showed only in her eyes.

Knowing she couldn't break free, she steadied herself and said: "At least let me finish cleaning; after living here so many years, leaving always requires tidying up."

"'Boss Ke.' Her tone carried a hint of pleading."

Ke Zhongyu, iron-hearted: "Don't even think about it."

With a ding, the elevator arrived.

Jiang Lai was thus carried into the elevator, carried out of the elevator, carried out of the residential complex, and finally tossed into the car.

Before Jiang Lai could react, Ke Zhongyu had already sat in and slammed the door shut with a bang.

Jiang Lai tried to open the other car door, but her wrist was tightly grabbed by Ke Zhongyu.

The man's expression was grim.

"Jiang Lai, try getting out of the car."

For some reason, facing his fierce gaze, Jiang Lai didn't feel afraid.

But she didn't understand where Ke Zhongyu's anger came from.

They were merely in a superior-subordinate relationship, or used to be.

At most, add the identity of a friend and older brother.

Jiang Lai tugged her hand, but it didn't budge.

"Boss Ke, this is my matter."

Ke Zhongyu felt a pang in his heart.

No conscience.
