Chapter 13: President Shen, why do you keep staring at my secretary?

~7 min read 1,291 words

Before lunch break, Jiang Lai entered holding her laptop and placed it in front of Ke Zhongyu.

"President Ke, it's done."

Ke Zhongyu was slightly surprised: "So fast?"

"Hmm, photograph, recognition, data visualization." Jiang Lai answered calmly.

This is much simpler than the lab data.

Ke Zhongyu looked at the icons on the computer screen; not only was there data visualization, but also analysis and countermeasures.

"Ordinary?" he asked, raising his eyebrows.

Jiang Lai nodded: "Hmm, ordinary."

Ke Zhongyu: "……"

He became even more certain that Jiang Lai was not ordinary.

"You are Professor Wang's student, why would you take an administrative post at the Ke Clan?" He stood up, walked around Jiang Lai, suddenly bent down and leaned close, eyes sharp: "Who do you work for?"

His voice was very close, tone icy cold, yet his breath was almost hot.

"My second aunt Ke Yunhui? Or Shen Xun, President of Star Universe Technology?"

After asking, he slowly rose, his demeanor returning to normal.

"Since the Ke Clan entered the tech field, Star Universe Technology has been our biggest competitor in this area. Your husband Shen Xun once snatched several projects from my subordinates; I hear he has a keen eye, a strong industry instinct, and whatever he invests in succeeds."

"After you married Shen Xun, you were arranged to join the Ke Clan, but oddly, everyone seems unaware that Shen Xun, President of Star Universe Technology, is already married."

"If he hadn't looked into Jiang Lai's records and had Assistant Zhou personally investigate, he wouldn't have known that Shen Xun, called a tech newcomer, had been married four years ago."

"Hiding it like this really raises suspicion."

Ke Zhongyu stared intently at Jiang Lai's expression, catching only a hint of surprise and mockery.

"Am I wrong?"

Jiang Lai looked at him: "No."

"Shen Xun never truly loved her to marry her, so how could he make it public?"

"President Ke overthinks it; Shen Xun doesn't think I have the ability to come to the Ke Clan as a spy." Shen Xun utterly looks down on her.

"As for Ms. Ke, I'm grateful she gave me a job to make a living, and at such a large conglomerate."

Jiang Lai's eyes are too clear, revealing no guile at all.

"Besides, President Ke, I've already submitted my resignation; I'm just going through the process."

"President Ke, if the data is fine, I'm going to have lunch."

Watching Jiang Lai leave, Ke Zhongyu felt a hint of defeat for the first time with a woman.

……

At lunchtime, Jiang Lai suddenly wanted to buy herself a new phone; upon opening the webpage, for someone who usually pinches pennies on herself, even two thousand was expensive.

She felt reluctant.

In fact, she now has a bonus, but she had been foolishly planning what to buy for Shen Xun, never thinking of buying something for herself.

Suddenly, a message from Shen Xun popped up on her phone.

【Tonight I have a social engagement, be sure to get off work on time and come home; don't leave Shutong alone at home, being alone at someone else's house would make her uncomfortable, and there are many things at home she doesn't know how to use】

Shen Xun had once been this gentle with her.

The first time she visited the Shen family before marriage, she heard Shen Xun tell Shen Xi: "Don't keep asking me to do things; I can't leave Jiang Lai alone, she'd feel uncomfortable."

At that moment she thought: Dean Mom, I really found the person you said would consider me.

But that person who once considered her feelings now ignores them to consider another woman.

Jiang Lai felt a bitter taste in her throat and couldn't eat.

One second before turning off her phone, she placed an order for a new phone for herself.

Not two thousand, but five thousand.

Returning to her workstation, she wanted to get a drink, but realized she hadn't brought a water cup when she left that morning.

One water cup is at home, another is in the lab.

The pantry has disposable cups.

Jiang Lai took a paper cup and then noticed there were three machines in front of her—a coffee maker, a water dispenser, and a juicer—while the fridge held neatly arranged fruit.

A hand reached from her side and opened the fridge door.

Jiang Lai shifted slightly to the side, turned her head, and saw Ke Zhongyu.

The grapes were washed, put into the juicer, a button pressed, and fresh grape juice came out.

Two cups in total.

Ke Zhongyu picked up one cup, pushed it toward Jiang Lai, and lifted the other to drink himself.

"Did you learn?"

"What?" Jiang Lai stared blankly at the grape juice before her, its fresh sweet fragrance filling her nostrils.

Ke Zhongyu said: "Learn it, then do it yourself next time; this won't happen again."

Jiang Lai wanted to say she would.

It's just juicing fruit; she can also slice a fruit platter.

"If it's not sweet enough, there's sugar over there." Ke Zhongyu also indicated with his eyes.

"Thank you, President Ke." Jiang Lai lifted the grape juice, "I don't like sweet drinks."

"Then what do you like?" Ke Zhongyu asked offhandedly, his peripheral vision never leaving her profile.

She is always absent-minded.

"Spicy." Jiang Lai lifted her eyes, her tone suddenly firm: "I love spicy food; even when I eat melon seeds, I go for the five-spice spicy flavor."

Ke Zhongyu slightly raised his eyebrows and left.

Jiang Lai watched Ke Zhongyu's straight back, feeling that this man really had two faces; earlier that morning he had been questioning and doubting her, and now at noon he was here casually discussing whether he liked sweet or spicy.

She returned to her workstation and took her lunch break.

At 2:30 she resumed work; the secretarial work posed no challenge for her, and she completed it properly, even finishing early.

For the remaining time, she even kept thinking about what excuse to make to avoid going home tonight.

"Hiss, my stomach hurts." Her colleague clutched her stomach and said anxiously, "I think I've got my period; it's over, President Ke has a dinner party at 7:30 tonight—what should we do?"

Jiang Lai's eyes lit up: "I'll go."

"You? Can you drink alcohol?" the colleague said, worried, "Although President Ke doesn't usually let us drink, proper etiquette at the table requires a drink or two."

Jiang Lai: "I can learn."

As long as she doesn't have to go back to that disgusting person's house or see the disgusting faces of Lin Shutong and Shen Xun, she can learn to drink.

Colleague: "?"

"Forget it; if you can't hold your liquor and President Ke isn't looking after you, you'll definitely be taken advantage of by that crowd."

Jiang Lai frowned: "Then you shouldn't go even more."

Colleague: "But I can drink."

Jiang Lai: "You've got your period."

The colleague cried out "Ay!" in pain, gritting her teeth.

Jiang Lai got up and entered Ke Zhongyu's office.

"President Ke, can I accompany you to tonight's dinner party?"

"Are you sure?" Ke Zhongyu's eyes were intriguing.

Jiang Lai nodded: "Sure."

When she and Ke Zhongyu appeared in the private room of the "Shanhe Ting Banquet," seeing the group that had been sitting rise in unison, and among them a familiar face, she finally understood the meaning behind Ke Zhongyu's intriguing look when he asked if she was sure.

Shen Xun was there too.

Fate brings enemies together.

Shen Xun saw Jiang Lai, obviously stunned, and failed to greet Ke Zhongyu right away.

"President Shen?" Ke Zhongyu looked at him with a half-smile, "President Shen, why have you been staring at my secretary?"
