Chapter 160: Delivering Evidence
Yanping Road Number Ten Courtyard.
Jiang Lai and Ke Zhongying spent more than two hours to complete the entry and exit procedures.
The guard at the security booth said, "Dr. Jiang, the vehicle also needs to be registered; only registered vehicles can enter and exit normally, and unregistered vehicles are not allowed to enter at all."
Jiang Lai doesn't have a car.
Ke Zhongying asked, "Does that mean the car we use to bring our belongings in is also not allowed?"
The guard replied, "Temporary registration is possible; it is valid for a single entry and must be done two hours in advance. The registration requires the owner's identity information, license plate number, vehicle model, and vehicle color. If any one of these does not match, entry is denied."
Ke Zhongying inhaled sharply, realizing that the rumored strict access control for officials' residential areas was indeed severe, and even the guard in front of her was a veteran.
In that case, she would have to have Sister Jiang Lai come down to receive her in the future.
But it's no big deal; they can just meet outside.
Jiang Lai sensed Ke Zhongying's thought and said to the guard, "Can we register a car for her?"
Ke Zhongying was shocked.
Is her place in Sister Jiang Lai's heart really that high?
Hot tears filled her eyes.
The guard looked at Ke Zhongying, shook his head and said, "Normally that's not allowed. If Dr. Jiang wants to register, she can, once a month, but any trouble caused by that car is not the responsibility of Number Ten Courtyard."
Jiang Lai nodded; she already knew that.
"Zhongying, register a car for you, choose a more discreet registration."
"Sister Jiang Lai, think again—are you sure I'm a good person?" Ke Zhongying looked at Jiang Lai's calm face, while her own heart was uneasy.
But she was also excited—how could anyone trust her as much as her father, mother, and brother do!
Jiang Lai signaled to her, "Go register."
Ke Zhongying: "Wuwuwu, Sister Jiang Lai, I will be your most loyal servant."
Jiang Lai: "Hmm?"
Ke Zhongying explained, "A younger sister is always her older sister's most loyal servant."
Jiang Lai laughed upon hearing it.
The guard sat at the computer desk, carefully watching the registration system's interface, hands on the keyboard, waiting for Ke Zhongying to provide the registration details.
Ke Zhongying registered a black Hongqi Car Car Car Car, which her grandparents had given to Ms. Nian more than ten years ago, and Ms. Nian handed it to her when she turned eighteen.
After the registration was completed, the guard verified that the information was genuine and valid before letting them in, and personally escorted them to the foot of a three‑story, red‑brick, modern lane‑style residential building.
The exterior wall was slightly mottled, with simple rectangular windows; some windows had external air‑conditioning units, and white downspouts and wires criss‑crossed—typical old architecture, full of the texture and marks of time.
Around it were dense dawn redwoods and camphor trees, and low fences at the ground level were planted with shrubs and greenery.
The entire Number Ten Courtyard was very quiet, as if far removed from the city's clamor.
The house had two units per stairwell; Jiang Lai and Ke Zhongying climbed the stairs to the third floor and opened the door with a key.
It had two bedrooms, two living rooms, a kitchen and a bathroom, facing south from the north side, spacious and bright, with the entire floor and furniture in deep brown and light yellow, somewhat old‑fashioned.
Ke Zhongying, after seeing it, said, "The lighting is great; we should remodel, right? Sister Jiang Lai, what style do you like?"
Jiang Lai nodded, "We need to remodel, into a mid‑century style."
It won't be livable in the short term.
She photographed every part of the house, already forming a renovation plan in her mind, intending to finish the proposal back home before contacting a design firm, aiming to move in as soon as possible.
After viewing the house it was already noon; the two found a nearby restaurant for lunch, and just as they sat down, Jiang Lai received a call from Mother Shen.
"I have obtained some evidence; come find me," Mother Shen still habitually used a commanding tone toward her.
But the current Jiang Lai would not obey; she replied, "If you want that money, come find me yourself."
She gave the restaurant's address.
Mother Shen snorted coldly over the phone, telling her to wait properly at the restaurant.
Ke Zhongying realized Mother Shen was coming to deliver evidence, her eyes brightening: "She really gets active when money's mentioned; I just don't know if the evidence she has is strong enough."
"Better than nothing," Jiang Lai now not only needed to prove that Shen Xun had an affair with Lin Shutong, but also to prove that the money Shen Xun gave Lin Shutong was marital property used for the extramarital affair.
No condition can be omitted.
It is known that she now has the kiss photo that Shen Xi originally sent to provoke her, as well as recent intimate photos; Ke Zhongyu has a video of a passionate kiss, and there were the three million monthly payments previously made to Lin Shutong, and in the past two months Lin Shutong purchased a house, a car, and jewelry.
Zhong Lü said they still lacked some solid evidence, such as long‑term chat logs where they called each other husband and wife, and frequent, ongoing cohabitation traces.
If they go to court, they must win in one decisive lawsuit.
She truly didn't want to keep spending time on litigation, so the early evidence collection must be sufficient and the chain of evidence complete.
One hour later.
Mother Shen and Shen Xi appeared together.
Jiang Lai wasn't surprised; in the Shen Family, aside from Mother Shen, Shen Xi was the one most eager to get that money back.
Shen Xi still had a slap mark on her face, plopped onto the chair, looking sullen.
Facing Jiang Lai, her expression became very complicated.
The person she once despised and rejected the most was actually the one who was good to her, to her brother, and to the Shen Family, while the person she liked and trusted most, Lin Shutong, turned out to be the biggest liar.
She found it hard to accept.
The harder she found it to accept, the angrier she became.
She was angry at Lin Shutong and at Jiang Lai, but never angry at herself.
So even though her eyes at Jiang Lai no longer showed the previous disdain, she still complained, "How can you be so useless? You let your own husband's money be taken by another woman."
Jiang Lai replied, "You're useful; you fawn over Lin Shutong every day and never notice that she's using your brother's money."
"You're more blind than I am."
"You!" Shen Xi ground her teeth in anger, and Mother Shen reached out to pull her back, telling them to stop arguing.
Mother Shen opened her phone and handed it over, "You had me record the video, so I didn't take photos. I recorded all of their chat logs, as well as the transfer records, but there were no transfers with special numbers."
Ke Zhongying said, "Shen Xun starts at a million the moment he makes a move; 520 and 1314 are just trivial numbers, or rather he already knows that such things cannot be spread carelessly."
The video is long, and Jiang Lai can't finish watching it in a short time; which parts are actually usable still has to be consulted with Zhong Lü.
"First send me the video; you also need to keep the original," Jiang Lai said, pulling out her phone.
Mother Shen nodded in agreement and then asked her daughter to take something out of the bag.
Six round‑trip tickets, domestic and international, all dated the same day.
Mother Shen: "I pulled them out from the bottom of a drawer, but they're already faded a bit and hard to read."
Shen Xi pointed at the dates and said, "That day is Lin Shutong's birthday. Jiang Lai, my mother and I have already worked hard to find evidence; you must get the money back! We absolutely cannot let that slut Lin Shutong act arrogantly!"
Jiang Lai was too lazy to bother with her.
While transferring the video, Shen Xun's number popped up on the phone; he hung up and called back immediately, one after another, as if something urgent was happening.
"I'll answer it anyway," Mother Shen took the phone and stepped outside, preventing her son from hearing Jiang Lai's voice and realizing she was secretly contacting Jiang Lai.
"Why is the call so urgent? What happened?"
"Mom…" Shen Xun began to speak but stopped, paused for a moment, then finished, "Shutong is pregnant."
