Chapter 200: The Great Baby Method
Shen Xun heard the sound of the door opening and thought it was his parents or younger sister; he didn't expect the person who walked in to be Lin Shutong.
He furrowed his brow and hung up the phone.
"How did you get here?"
Facing the man's coldness, Lin Shutong felt a pang in her heart, tugged at her lips, and said, "I'm worried about you, A-Xun."
Shen Xun's face was very pale, and he was visibly thin.
Lin Shutong had met many men, but only Shen Xun had been with her for ten years, from meeting at eighteen in college to now at twenty-eight; she naturally had sincere feelings for him.
Seeing Shen Xun's current state, Lin Shutong felt a surge of distress—distressed that he tormented himself, and even more distressed by his attitude toward her, as if he had become a different person.
Jiang Lai silently took away her lover.
"A-Xun, would you like something to eat?" Lin Shutong looked at the cold breakfast sitting untouched on his desk, frowned, and said, "Even if you don't think of me, think of the child in my womb."
Shen Xun looked at her belly and said, "I said before, the child cannot stay."
Lin Shutong: "A-Xun, the doctor said that if I abort this child, I will never be able to have children again."
That was, of course, a lie to Shen Xun.
She had only done a B-ultrasound at Hexin Yiyuan; the appearance of He Hongyuan made her a little worried that Xie Yongsi and Shen Xun might see, though the chance of being noticed was actually small, she just couldn't stop worrying.
The doctor also ordered HCG and progesterone tests for her, but she didn't go for the basic blood and urine routine or infectious disease and thyroid screenings, thinking of switching hospitals, yet recently it's been a sensitive period.
Whether Jiang Lai would recover the marital joint property remained hanging over her head.
Shen Xun had long said Jiang Lai would demand the money back, but lately there's been no movement; she simply couldn't fathom what Jiang Lai was thinking, feeling as if a dull blade were grinding on her.
Lin Shutong rubbed her belly; this child had come at both the right and wrong time, leaving her torn, but one thing was certain: the child could tether Shen Xun.
Shen Xun probably never imagined that, while he once wanted to use a child to bind Jiang Lai, today Lin Shutong was binding him with the child and her health.
Heaven's way turns full circle.
Shen Xun is not a ruthless person; losing the child would also harm a woman's health, and he obviously hesitated.
After realizing this, Lin Shutong pressed her advantage: "A-Xun, you know my health has never been good; every menstrual period hurts terribly, getting pregnant is truly rare, I'm twenty-eight, the prime age to have a child—you wouldn't be so heartless, would you?"
Shen Xun opened his lips: "Think it through yourself—can you bear the consequences of giving birth to this child?"
"Shutong, I said before, we part on good terms; I can't give you marriage, and what I previously supported and gave you will count as my compensation."
"The child..." his voice trailed off, "Even if born, he couldn't return to the Shen family; Jiang Lai wouldn't accept it."
Lin Shutong thought Shen Xun was ill; what made him think Jiang Lai would remarry him?
She, too, is a woman—no woman could accept her husband cheating and lavishly spending on another woman, divorcing, then someday crawling back to remarry.
How much love would that take?
She acknowledged that Jiang Lai once deeply loved Shen Xun, something anyone could see.
But precisely because she loved so deeply, she was hurt all the more, and being hurt deeply made her all the more resolute.
Everyone can see Jiang Lai's current attitude toward Shen Xun; surely he knows it himself, otherwise how would he have ended up hospitalized for stomach spasms?
"A-Xun, you and Jiang Lai are already divorced." Lin Shutong, eyes red, urged him, "When will you learn to look at the person before you? I've returned to your side, and there's still our baby in my womb—we are a family of three."
Who would have thought Shen Xun was still thinking of Jiang Lai.
If only, over these four years, he had looked more at the person before him.
"You're right; for the past four years, the person before my eyes has always been Jiang Lai."
Hearing this, Lin Shutong: "……"
Simply speechless.
"You and Jiang Lai are in the past." She suppressed her inner resentment and continued speaking gently.
But Shen Xun's gaze turned firm: "It's you and I who are in the past; four years ago I married Jiang Lai, so you should be my past—it's my own unawareness, my fault, that led to this result."
Lin Shutong was about to break down.
"Shen Xun."
She called his full name.
"Are you sure you really like Jiang Lai, or do you only love the glory and honor that surround her?"
"Clearly, before Jiang Lai had any honor, I said she shared a name with Dr. Jiang of our project team, and you insisted it couldn't be her, saying a name clash would be her honor."
"I know, the matter of the Self-developed Chip Project—I really did deceive you; I'm not the project's head, but I also feared you'd think your years of investment had gone down the drain, so I did it out of necessity, merely because I care too much for you and love you too much."
Lin Shutong appeared utterly sincere.
"Do you know Yuan Shu Technology? They have a medical product called Cloud Pulse, and they've recently launched a project called Starry Eye; Yuan Shu Technology's Chief Lu found my maternal grandfather and asked me to lead the project, A-Xun—I'm not lacking either."
"Not because of that." Shen Xun flatly denied, "I really can't live without Jiang Lai."
Lin Shutong froze, afraid to go on, lest another word be like making a wedding dress for Jiang Lai.
Shen Xun's attitudes toward her and toward Jiang Lai had long been clearly different.
Just after returning to the country, she sensed Shen Xun always held a place for Jiang Lai in his heart; she launched a fierce assault, hoping to completely drive Jiang Lai from his heart.
She thought she had succeeded.
She hadn't.
Jiang Lai said nothing, did nothing—just the act of divorcing won her this match.
Lin Shutong pressed her lips, returning to the child topic: "A-Xun, can we not abort the child? Would you like to take a look?"
Speaking, she had already taken a new ultrasound report from her bag and handed it over.
"The fetal heartbeat is already visible, A-Xun; our child is growing, very healthy—even though his mother has recently suffered much injustice, he's still growing well, A-Xun..."
Lin Shutong didn't believe the "Great Baby Method" had no effect on Shen Xun.
Shen Xun hadn't taken the report, but his gaze couldn't help sweeping over it.
It wasn't yet formed, so there was really nothing to see, but the report indeed noted a visible gestational sac and fetal heartbeat.
Invisibly, some kind of magic made Shen Xun's body gradually relax.
Lin Shutong's lips curled slightly, they took his broad hand, slowly placed it on their own belly, and whispered softly: "Ah Xun, the child is growing slowly here, it's your child, your first child."
Shen Xun did not withdraw his hand.
He didn't know if it was an illusion, but he seemed to feel the child's presence, his child.
Shen Xun's expression became somewhat dazed.
